It's June at the Cafe!

It's June and if you've been around for a while, you know what that means: it's almost Fest time! Whether you've been here for a while or you only just found the Cafe, we encourage you to SIGN UP for this year’s 007 Fest, which is the same format as last year, but with a fun new premise. Sign-ups are between June 1-15; you can join after that if you email us, but onboarding may take a little longer. See this post for details!

Discord refresh

If you're a regular on the discord, there will be some changes soon in response to your survey responses so far. Our plan is to change a few things before Fest craziness hits, and then more of the changes will come afterwards.

Saturday Cafe: June 13th and 27th

Come join us in the fandom Slack or Discord as we write, draw, sprint, plot, brainstorm, cheerlead, and generally have a good time trying to get things done together. If you’d like an invite to either platform, go ahead and message one of the mods.

It’s almost time to sign up for 007 Fest!

What is 007 Fest?

007 Fest is an annual month-long celebration in July of all things Bond!

The primary goals of 007 Fest is to create anything and everything relating to James Bond and to celebrate the fandom community. We will have prompts, activities, and hangouts in Discord to chill with other members of the fandom from around the world. 

This year, the storyline we are following is the MI6 leadership’s attempt to run some internal team bonding activities in a four-week event they are calling The A.N.E.M.O.N.E. Games. Each week will feature a different theme—Respect, Creativity, Courage, and Integrity—and have activities planned by different MI6 branches. With so many irons in the fire, the chances of it going smoothly are minimal. 

This is where you all come in! As various members of the MI6 staff or even outside consultants, you’re being roped into helping plan and execute activities, and prove that MI6 does actually have some sense of teamwork despite the usual chaos.

Each week in July, we will ask you to set personal goals for yourself. The overall goal completion rate in the Fest participant population will determine how well The A.N.E.M.O.N.E. Games go in the story. A little chaos isn’t awful, but by helping each other complete goals by the end of the month, M might be convinced that everyone deserves a raise.

I don’t write or art! Can I still participate?

Absolutely! If you want, you can only make social goals—hosting or joining watch parties or Discord chats, for example. 

We also have fun immersive goals/scavenger hunt activities that don’t involve writing or arting.

And if you want to make a “hold my beer” level of goal, we also offer prompt tables and other challenges!

You can also participate without goals during certain weeks or the whole month if you want! 007 Fest is as chill or as high-key as you want to make it.

How can I sign up?

Sign-ups will be open June 1st through June 15th! Just fill out the form and we’ll contact you around June 18th with more information. If you’d like to sign up after the 18th, you can, it will just take the mods a little longer to get you plugged in.

Saturday Cafe: Cafe Saturday!

For today's Saturday Cafe, I decided to tackle Moneypenny's route on the Choose Your Own Adventure map and add a theme of treats you can order at a cafe wherever I could~

M1: Speak to Agent Ferguson’s contact // Share a recipe and let us know what Bond character would enjoy it the most

I think that Q would bring out my spekkoek recipe for days when he needs to shut his brain down. If he makes two cakes at once and only has one in the oven at a time, he will have only a few seconds now and then of downtime over the course of several hours.

This recipe is merciless. You cannot turn your back on it or let your mind drift for even thirty seconds, or it's ruined. You need a lot of eggs, butter, and focus. Q is not going to enjoy the process, exactly, but he'll rely on it once in a while to decompress his brain.

M2: Evade the arms dealers in the forest // Create a themed rec list of at least 5 works

Yours, J by swtalmnd - Bond sends letters. Q is vexed. Q-branch starts a betting pool. There are an appalling amount of sweets. Also, 002 is a bit of an arse.

“I have secrets,” Molly confessed, and she was very serious and solemn about this perfectly natural thing. It was only on their first date, though it rather felt like they’d been together for a long time, having been texting and chatting and flirting for months before this.

“I’m guessing these secrets are something outside of the ordinary,” Bill prompted. She was sweet and silly and sunshine personified, but while some people took all that and dismissed her as nothing special, he knew that she was also intelligent, dedicated, and brave. If he’d been cultivating her as an asset he’d have already nixed her for the field, but she would have shone brightly in the Labs of TSS. She was quite happy in her current job at St. Bartholomew’s, however, and Bill was quite happy as well with ‘only’ being her friend and potentially her boyfriend, if this date went well.

“Right, yeah, everyone has secrets,” Molly laughed, nervous and trying to play it off as anything but. “I just mean that if we, you know, if we’re going to date, then you should know some things about me. Or, well, know that there are some things that you can’t know about me.”

The Chief of Staff of MI6 nodded amiably.

“I don’t think we need to have the kids/no kids conversation quite yet, but I’m happy to discuss whatever boundaries you want to set with me.”

His date became a flustered mess at this intimation that they might someday find themselves starting a family of two with the potential for more, and Bill found himself charmed by it. Long hours surrounded by politicians and spies made it all the more refreshing to find out that the woman behind the perfectly spelled and punctuated messages that he’d slowly fallen in love with was so artless in person.

His brain reminded him that it wasn’t impossible that she was deliberately acting this way in order to disarm him, but he told that part of himself to hush. She’d already been vetted quite thoroughly, and he had confidence in Six’s background checks.

He’d fine-tuned them recently, and was rather proud of his work, all told.

“Yes, well, it’s not so much that I have all these secrets, you see,” Molly began explaining. “But I keep secrets for, well, my friends, and sometimes that means that I’m the one they call when they need, you know…”

“To talk more about them?” Bill suggested.

“Yes!” She seemed so relieved, like he’d thrown her a life preserver rather than a conversational bridge. Blushing charmingly, she gained energy and momentum, like it was truly a relief to be getting through this fairly mundane topic at speed.

“So sometimes I might need to drop whatever I’m doing and go help a friend with something and I won’t be able to tell you anything about it, not really, and it might happen at a terrible time; right in the middle of a movie, or, or our anniversary dinner! and I know it looks horrid, like I’m abandoning you or cheating on you but you have to know I’d never do that.”

This was almost too convenient, really. Bill thought it would be just his luck if Molly Hooper turned out to hold a position similar to his in MI5, spending time behind a desk but holding other people’s lives in her hands. He reminded himself of his background checks and forged on.

“I have a very demanding boss, myself, so if you can forgive me occasionally being summoned away for work without any notice, I promise I’ll be just as generous about your friends needing emotional support,” he assured her.

“Oh! Well, good then!” She absolutely burst into radiance, all smiles and pleased nods, and then impulsively raised her water glass.

“To keeping secrets, but not letting them get in the way of happiness!”

He laughed at the odd but oddly appropriate toast, and clinked his glass against hers.

It’s about as small and short a wedding as possible without illegitimizing it, but they do manage to work in a few traditions. They’re at Vauxhall instead of a chapel, but James is in a morning suit with a posy in his lapel, and he is waiting front and slightly off-center with Tanner, who is officiating. There’s also soft piano music issuing forth from a Bluetooth speaker to drown out any ambient office noise. As the conference room door opens, Bond turns with a smile to greet his betrothed. The smile is chased by a sigh, and then a rueful shake of the head.

“Really, darling?”

Eve grins and improves her already impeccable posture, lifting her head and setting her shoulders just slightly back as she begins sedately walking down the long room toward him, eyes sparkling with excitement as she carries a tablet in front of her like a bouquet.

“You knew who I was when you proposed.”

Q isn’t even looking at his webcam, distracted by something exploding on one of his screens. His curls are rumpled by sleep and crushed into even worse shape by a headset, and from what Bond can see of his torso as he turns from one screen to another, the young man is still in his pyjamas.

“I also know who we work for,” Bond replies, “and I’d hoped that we’d be left alone on this day at least.”

“You should be grateful that I approved this nonsense at all, much less the honeymoon,” M butts in, sparing a moment to glare at him from a corner of the tablet screen. “Letting my Quartermaster and my best double-oh go on a two week holiday together is not standard operating procedure, I assure you, and I’m still not convinced I’m not signing this young man’s death warrant, letting him attach himself to you.”

“Thank you, ma’am,” Bond says with a respectful nod, because anything else might have resulted in consequences most dire. M harrumphs as if he’d blown her a cheeky kiss before turning her focus back to the mission at hand.

Eve is in place by then, and after a quick glance at the camera, Q flaps a hand.

“Go on; I’m listening!”

Tanner snorts, then goes briskly about his appointed business, first confirming that the two men are lawfully free to marry, then that they do agree to take the other as their lawfully wedded partner.

Bond’s responses are prompt and heartfelt. Q’s are a bit delayed as he must first send a missile here and overload a transformer there before muting his headset mic to vow cheerfully at his webcam.

“You have now both made the declarations required by law, as well as a solemn and binding contract with each other in the presence of your witnesses,” Tanner declares, and it’s touching how heartily pleased the man is. “It therefore gives me great pleasure to pronounce you husband and husband. You may now blow each other a kiss across this secured connection.”

Bond catches his kiss and presses it against his heart, and his face must be doing something soppy without his permission, because Moneypenny coos at him. Q snatches his kiss out of the air without looking and somehow makes it look cool instead of comical, then presses it to his lips with his left hand while his right hand chases a jeep with a drone.

The marriage schedule is signed by Bond, scanned, dupli-printed at an undisclosed location, signed by Q and then M, scanned, dupli-printed in the conference room, and then signed by Moneypenny. Tanner signs last, congratulates the newlyweds, then dons an earwig and takes the tablet to standby for any orders.

Moneypenny picks up the marriage schedule and then links her arm with Bond’s.

“Come on then, let’s get this filed, and then I’ll buy you a celebratory drink or two.”

It’s not what he’d hoped his afternoon and evening would look like, but since his new husband is M-only-knows-where, doing something that 007 has not been read into, it’s his best available option.

“Is this what you and Q do when I’m unexpectedly unavailable; complain about work over pints at the pub?”

Moneypenny actually giggles.

“Complaining over pints, yes, but we’re on his sofa and it’s Ben and Jerry’s instead of Beavertown.”

They’re stopped at the door by Tanner.

“Moneypenny, Q asks that you return his husband in one piece,” the Chief of Staff calls out. Moneypenny laughs gaily.

“With pleasure, Q. With pleasure.”
