Calico was still getting the hang of being not only a mother but basically a single mother with a very demanding job since her boyfriend was of no use when it came to caring for their infant. She had lucked out in having a pretty uneventful night the previous night and so she was more rested than most days as she rounded the corner and entered a viewing room only to realize it was already occupied. “Sorry, I didn’t know this room was taken. Do you mind if I join you? I don’t want to miss the Games starting while trying to find an empty room.”

Calico laughed, it was a tired laugh but also her first real laugh in months. “I’ll have to let him know that you said that when he wakes.” She smiled before eating another fry. “Alexander Nero…Madras.” She nodded, hoping Cambric hadn’t noticed her pause.

“Definitely tell him that,” he said with a laugh. Cambric raised an eyebrow at her choice of last name while he wondered if he should ask or not. Was it his business? He’d like to think it was considering he had known Calico since his sister had been little but… “Should I ask or should we talk about how amazing these fries would be if we put cheese or something on them?”

Calico let out a sigh as a sad smile crossed her tired face. “I doubt you want to hear about my love life woes.” She shrugged but internally wished Cambric would press the issue. “Although I agree the fries would be better with cheese.”

Calico was exhausted from being a new mother as she went to a local restaurant to try and get some lunch after moving back into The Tower. She hadn’t been sleeping well and that was clear on her face as she stared off blankly, waiting for her food.

mare looked for an even vaguely familiar face. the restaurant was crowded, and she didn’t particularly want to be there, but she wanted to be back in the tower avoiding birch even less. “hey, calico, right?” she said, sliding into the seat across from the girl. she was a stylist, and mare was pretty sure they’d met once or twice. once on the roof, when she was (yet again) avoiding birch. 

“it’s mare. remember me?”

Calico looked up as someone spoke her name. The women she had shared a cigarette with at the end of the last Games. A small smile formed and she nodded her head. “Yeah! I remember! How are you?”

Calico startled slightly as someone spoke to her and a plate slide towards her but as she looked up wide eyed she relaxed tremendously and even smiled upon seeing Cambric. She laughed quietly “Thanks, feels like I have to eat pretty much non-stop to keep up my supply and energy for this one.” She nodded gently towards the young infant in the baby carrier beside her. Calico rolled her eyes “Then I feel very special.”

“Well, tell the little cutie to take it easy on you.” Cambric joked with a soft laugh. It made him wonder how he would be with an infant in tow. Would he like it? Cambric wasn’t sure because it had never really been an option for him. There had been a time when he had thought it was in his future, but now he figured that door was closed. He didn’t think about it too much. “So, does the little one have a name? Baby is only attractive as a name for a time or two.”

As a voice spoke Calico looked up and around as she was pulled back to reality. “Y-Yeah, sorry if I was staring. I zoned out.”

When the girl spoke, Echo shrugged.  “Oh it’s fine,” she murmured with a smile.  “I just wanted to make sure you were alright.  You seemed out of it.”

Calico smiled kindly back “I’m more than a little sleep deprived because of this one.” She nodded to the baby carrier beside her.

Calico was surprised when Lark came over and spoke so kindly to her after their last interaction when Lark had threatened Calico’s life. Calico nodded sleepily. “Thank you.” She tried to smile. She wasn’t sure how people were going to react to her unannounced pregnancy. “Meadow and Mason have really grown up.” She added.

“yeah, they have.” She nodded. “you kids wanna say hi?”

“hi!” Mason waved with a chubby hand. Mea just scowled.

“no!”

“alright, that’s Mea for you.” She shrugged. “do you need help with him? You look exhausted. I could trade you for Mason, he’s lower maitenence than a baby that small would be…” Lark didn’t know if that would be something the mother would go for, but she looked positively dead on her feet. Lark knew all those feelings. Unplanned pregnancy, single parenting, absolute tiredness taking over every part of your body.

Calico sleepily waved back at the twins before looking up confused at Lark’s offer and then over to her sleeping child. “You’d help me?” Calico reaches over to adjust the blanket. “I think I’m okay right now but thank you.” She smiled softly. “You guys can sit here if you’d like though.”

Lark saw calico from across the room. she was holding her own twins on her hips, and smiled when she saw a framiliar face. she’d been planning on just catching her eye with a friendly wave, at first. after all, calico didn’t seem to like her much. but when she saw a stroller with a baby, she had to come over.

“hey, calico!” she said. it was in a kind tone of voice, smiling. “is this little one yours? you look exhausted, i would believe it if it was. but they’re adorable.”

Echo frowned when she saw the girl zoning out so completely.  While she could understand that the Capitol was a lot to deal with, she didn’t think the Games season had even been going on long enough for that.  “You alright there?”

Calico’s mouth opened to answer his question but then she felt him look down over her, the words freezing in her throat and her hand going to her visible bump. Her cheeks burned “T-Thanks.” She whispered barely loud enough to be heard over the ball.

Cambric looked at the girl a moment. “So… What’s going on?” Cambric paused for a moment. “I mean most women would have talked my ear off already about baby names, toys, nurseries, and whatnot.” Most pregnant women he knew just loved talking about their baby. “It’s good news, isn’t it?”

Calico gave Cambric a puzzled look for a moment before understanding what he had meant when he elaborated. Calico swallowed at the last question for smiling softly and nodding. “Y-Yeah, of course it is! I’ve always wanted to be a mother.” It wasn’t a lie, ever since Calico could remember she had been waiting to grow up and get married and have a baby. It just seemed like the last item was happening before the first two had been completed. Calico’s arm that wasn’t resting on her baby bump moved to behind her back just in case her expert make up job some how didn’t cover the marks her boyfriend had left earlier. “It’s very good news.” She nodded.

Calico took a deep breath before she walked into the Victor’s Ball. She had been anxious about the upcoming ball for the past three and a half months but she knew she just needed to put on a brave face, ignore any strange looks she got, and just have fun and network. Calico froze as two brightly dress Capitolie women began to whisper to each other while staring at her. Calico went to turn tail to go and hide when she hit someone. “Oh my god, I am so sorry!” She called as she reached out only to realize who it was and to feel relief wash over her. “Cam…” She breathed out. @cambricthevictor

“Woah!” Cambric started as he felt someone bump into him, midway through his sip of champagne. He really needed a beer. It was the only thing that made these parties semi-bearable. He felt like a damn supermodel if he was being honest; he was just there to smile, look pretty, and be seen.

Yet, here he was running into one of the faces he actually didn’t mind seeing. “Woah, where is the fire, kitty cat?” He joked with a grin as he looked down at Calico. He hadn’t seen her since the Games ended. “Well… Look at you. Looking good of course.”

Calico couldn’t help but laugh at what Lark said. “Trust me, you don’t have to worry about that. This is the Hunger Games not some school play.” Calico’s eyes shifted to the infants in front of her. “Hi Meadow, hi Mason.” She finger waved. “Thank you, if I need help I’ll ask.” Calico laughed lightly. “Both? I’m from Eight originally, hence my name, and live there occasionally but for the most part these days I live in the Capitol.”

If she identified as both, Lark had to treat her like a capitolite. Mask up, then. Not that it wasnt already, but lark looked the perfect picture of mystery. “yes, good.” she decided, eventually. “we call her Mea, it’s shorter.” she watched as the babies got a wave, Mason smiling at the attention and Mea still looking off into the distance. “they’re sweet, but if you ever touch them you’re dead.” It was said so evenly, with just the slightest tone of threat. coming from lark, it was dark and scary. Lark knew that.

Calico gave a small nod at the nickname before her brows wrinkled in confusion on why the women was suddenly being so hostile towards her. “Right...” She scoffed, not intimidated in the least. Leave them to be if they ever need help, noted. She thought to herself. “Well, on that note I’m going to go attend to Games business.” Calico smiled sweetly. “It was nice meeting you, Mea and Mason.” She waved at the babies one last time before turning and leaving, not giving Lark a second look.

Calico withdrew the pack away from the female before laughing lightly “Yes, I’m old enough. Barely, but old enough nonetheless.” Calico put her cigarette out so as not to bother the women with the smoke. “I’m Calico by the way. I’m the new stylist for Seven.”

“You don’t have to stop on my account,” she assured her. “My lungs are probably already a bit poorly after twenty-four years in District Eight. I’m Satine. Victor of the 67th.” She smiled warmly. “Congratulations on your new job!”

Calico flashed the young women a smile. “It’s okay, I should probably quit anyway.” Calico laughed lightly “I know what you’re talking about, I’m originally from District Eight.” She didn’t expand upon how she had done the practically unheard of by leaving her District without being a Victor. “Nice to meet you.” She returned the smile. “Thank you, I’m very excited!”
