YAYYAYAYAYYAYAAYAYYAAY KEYES'S BIRTHDAY!! Knew I wouldn't have the time to draw a lot today (500 college assignments at once), so I made this in advance thankfully. I love this old man so much, definitely one of the reasons I get up in the morning. Didn't take this drawing too seriously because of how much of a time crunch I was on. Anyway, time to go eat a sweet treat on his behalf!

(If I get free time later, I might do a dedicated somewhat serious sketch for him because I just love him so much.)

Alright Wingmen fans I am back! I’ve doodled how I imagine them in my head based on what we know from the book + some of your headcanons. They are just rough headshots so keep that in mind! But I would love to hear all of your thoughts as well as any critiques or changes you might want to see. When I work on full pieces they will look a lot more polished!

A few notes here!

- some veeeery subtle wrinkles. Trying to show that he’s a bit older/has seen shit hit the fan more LOL

- dark hair + eyes, I’m envisioning a very dark brown that looks black unless under direct sun. his hair’s flat and neat.

- might make him a bit more tan but I’m trying to show the amount of time he spends in his office doing paperwork LOL + maybe some beauty marks or freckles? Indecisive but I’ll see

- I imagine he has more elongated features + a nose with a bump.

- has a bit more of a youthful look.

- tanner, spends more time outside. thought it was charming too

- dimples, duh?

- dirty blonde/light brown hair, more messy though I imagine after more time w/ the skipper he ends up making it neater.

- hazel/brownish eyes

Hello wingmen fans, I plan on drawing Jack and Trusty! The only thing that’s been holding me back so long is their appearances (and art block, but that’s beside the point.) I wanted to ask how you all envision them! Hair color, eye color, height, or even small quirks like freckles or beauty marks. Nothing’s off limits. Let me know!

Reading the Halo novels has had a very unplanned effect on me in that now I really care about what happened to Captain Keyes. Don't get me wrong, what happened to him is horrific no matter how you spin it, even by Flood standards, but... getting snapshots of him throughout his life, getting to know him, seeing him develop as a person and grow into the leader we see in Combat Evolved. Knowing what he meant to Catherine Halsey, to his daughter Miranda, to his crew on the Iroquois. It makes you care about him, and then he suffers one of if not the worst fates in all of fiction, and there's nothing you can do to stop it because this is how it's always ended for him. Every piece of media that's brought back Jacob Keyes has only served to twist the knife a little deeper because he mattered so much to so many people and that list includes me.

Oh you have to tell me all about Wingmen! What did you think of it? Any surprises? What were your favourite things about it? Or whatever you want to share 😁

I really enjoyed it! I am not usually a fan of the very male American writing style from the 40s-80s so it took a bit of getting used to all of the American lingo. (I will never be able to take someone who says 'hey, mister!' as an insult seriously.) I read The City and the Pillar not long ago, which probably helped me ease into it haha

So I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did, but I really did enjoy the romance and felt the chemistry between Jack and Fred. They were the highlight to me but they wouldn't have hit as hard without the backdrop of the actual war story.

I have Don't Look Down In Mercy to read this autumn at some point, so with that one down, I think I'll have read the bulk of queer war stories, but always up for more recommendations!
