Shiny Hunting Tips: The Friend Safari
Although still unconfirmed officially, it’s become pretty obvious that the Friend Safari has a greatly increased shiny rate. Personally, I’ve caught about nine shiny Pokemon in the Safari alone! I’ve had a lot of people ask me what my technique is so I’ve decided to make a comprehensive guide.
~Pre-Hunting Tips~
1. Get safaris:
Most importantly, you need to have access to the Friend Safari itself. You’ll need to have beaten the Elite Four to do so. Once you gain access to it, you need to start actually filling it up. The way you do this is by exchanging friend codes with another 3DS owner. You can find your own friend code by going to the orange smiley face in the main menu whenever you boot up your 3DS.
You can just exchange codes with your friends or followers, or you can take it a step further and actually be able to determine which Pokemon will be in the safari by going on Pokemon-Connection or browsing the “Friend Safari“ tag. They actually have the Pokemon in their safaris listed so you can choose which ones you like the best! Just be sure to also give them your code; you need to have each other registered or else the safari won’t appear.
2. Get a Pokemon with Illuminate:
The ability Illuminate increases wild Pokemon encounters by 200%, vastly increasing your chances of encountering a shiny. Even if that Pokemon faints (and I actually recommend making it faint because it will probably be weak), as long as it’s at the head of your party, the effects will still remain. Pokemon with this ability are Staryu and Starmie, Chinchou and Lanturn, Volbeat, and Watchog.
3. Get something to do:
If you don’t have something else you’re focusing on, you’ll go crazy with tedium. I recommend watching a movie/tv show/anime or reading something while you hunt. It’s very easy to multitask with this method.
~Safari Hunting~
For this part, I’ll just be listing the steps; they’re pretty self-explanatory.
Set your team up with the Pokemon with Illuminate in front
Choose a safari
Start your tv show/movie/etc
Get on your bike
Use the Encounter O-Power (optional)
Ride through the grass until you encounter a Pokemon
Run/fight the Pokemon if it isn’t a shiny
Repeat until you find one
All I can say for this is don’t give up! Once I caught a shiny within 15 minutes, other times it took days (or several sessions). You just need to be patient!
~Other Tips~
1. Train a Pokemon
What I’ve been doing is using the Friend Safari to train up Pokemon. I usually chose a safari with a weakness to the Pokemon I’m training (like, if I’m training a Fire type I’d choose a Grass safari) but once they reach a certain level they’re strong enough to take on any type. I also equip them with a Lucky Egg to speed up the process. I recommend doing this because (at least for me) it decreases the level of frustration. Even if you didn’t find a shiny, you were able to train up a Pokemon! I’ve been able to get Pokemon from level 30 to level 100 in just a couple of days of this kind of training.
The only downside to this method is that it may cut your shiny hunting short thanks to the depletion of PP. I ended up growing a ton of Leppa berries in order to combat this (Leppa berries restore 10 PP to a selected move; they’re basically Ethers that you can grow)
2. Use Pickup
Something I recently started doing was keeping a Pokemon with the ability Pickup in my party while I’m hunting. If the Experience Share is on, they should also gain experience whenever you beat an opponent. I got a level 3 Zigzagoon up to a level 85 Linoone without even having to use it in battle!
I’ve gotten tons of great items from Linoone, like PP Ups, Moon and Sun Stones, Rare Candies, and Heart Scales. Just be sure to check your Pokemon frequently to make sure it’s holding something; it won’t be able to pick up any new items if it’s already holding something. You can see a full list of the Pokemon with Pickup and what items they can get here. I personally recommend Linoone because, unlike many Pokemon with Pickup, it keeps that ability even after it evolves.
Cool , got to ask my kid to try
