Kill bosses without taking a single hit on your team!
COLD START on a boss!
Take a FODDER dragon with you!
Did I mention you'll actually be using an elemental battle stone?!
That's right: a year after it was first created, I've made a 2-trainer build using my original beloved Clobber mage. Here's the thread I made on the build (it will be updated to the clobber guides thread later) with a fuller writeup.
Want to win 1000g?
I'm pretty sure this build can take a trainee from levels 1 - 25 in a single sitting in any of the 3 lvl 25 venues without resetting once, but I haven't tested it myself. Frigidfin starts this Thursday, December 4th and gives a 2x exp bonus in the Coliseum. I will give the first person to fully level a dragon in one sitting (no resets, no full team wipeouts) using this build 1000g. I will give the second and third people to fully level a dragon in one go using this build 500g and 250g.
You must start with a level 1 trainee. Keep a screenshot of this dragon at level 1.
You must level in either the Kelp Beds, Construct Workshop, or the Forbidden Portal, using this 2-trainer build. Keep a screenshot of your dragon reaching lvl 25 with your trainers in the party.
Your finished trainee shouldn't have any added stats or battle stones. Well, this one is obvious, since you should be doing the training in one go, but it bears repeating!
Post in the thread if you attempt this challenge.
This took a lot of time and effort to put together. If you enjoy the build, please share with a friend, reblog, or leave me a comment! It means a lot to me and helps more people see it. :)
Read on for the build!
If you're familiar with the original Clobber build, this upgraded Clobber is very similar. It requires 110 QCK & 82 INT.
You are using an elemental ultimate to do damage to mobs. Elemental matchups DO matter here!
Try to use an Ice or Fire clobber mage. The rest of the guide and graphics are written with an Ice element clobber in mind.
The fighter build is comparatively simpler. It requires 103 STR & 92 QCK. You need a Rally and an Eliminate.
Which elements work best for the Clobber?
The two elements you should avoid are Earth and Arcane.
Fossilize procs a chance to greatly increase your enemies' physical defense while stunning them - which is a worse Clobber. Enfeeble operates on an entirely different damage system. This means it scales poorly, making it deal much less damage than every other elemental ult.
All other elemental ults:
(6 * INT + 17) - (2 * MND)
Against a Jelly Drone with 45 MND, we can see that another neutral-damage elemental ult will do 419 damage, but Enfeeble will only do 234!
How to Use
You put your Clobber in the top slot and your Fighter in the middle.
On the first turn, you look at the enemy pack. Depending on if it's a mage or melee pack, you're going to Haste either the Clobber or the Fighter, Clobber the enemies or hit them with an elemental ult for your fighter to clean up.
Sound and look complicated? It isn't! Okay, it does look complicated. But I promise you it's super intuitive if you actually get in the Coli.
After building your breath, on your next battle, pull this up in another window and follow along:
Once you get the hang of using the Clobber, you actually don't need to stick to this turn order! You'll be able to understand what the fastest and most efficient thing to do is. Great for people who want to stay engaged in coli. (If you just want to grind mindlessly, then the set turn order works too.)
ELEMENTAL ULTS
This is what REALLY makes this build work! You're using your Clobber's elemental ult to deal damage and replace a Rallied Scratch.
These are guides I've created for each of the level 25 venues. Prioritize using scratch + eliminate on the enemies from left to right, top to bottom. The enemies up top in each venue are Melee attackers! "Rallied Scratch + Elim" means you cannot kill that enemy with a Congeal + elim - you must scratch it first. (This is the minimum you need for each enemy group: that is, every single enemy in the Congeal + Rallied Elim group can also be killed by Scratch + Elim, every enemy in Congeal + Rallied Elim group can also be killed by Congeal + unrallied Elim, etc)
Since I recommend using Ice element for the Clobber, these graphics apply specifically to Ice mages.
If you run another element of Clobber, you should take a look at the Elemental matchup chart instead!
Elemental rankings worked on two parts. We made an entire spreadsheet about this.
To create the rankings, I created a list of important stats for each element in each venue:
2-Turn Kills
2-Turn Survives
Rallies Needed
Damage to Boss 1
Damage Boss 2
2-Turn Kills (Melee Mobs)
2-Turn Survives (Melee Mobs)
The points system is calculated as a 'score' for the value that particular element got in that particular column, either subtracted from or subtracting the average of all the elements for that value.
Why is 2-turn kills and 2-turn survives calculated twice, one in general and once for melee enemies?
Well, melee enemies are the dangerous ones! You can kill a mage pack in half the time of a melee pack, and the faster you get rid of melee enemies the better. So it's important that the ones you kill faster are the melee enemies.
The other thing is… the elemental ults proc status effects!
Congeal has a chance to freeze an enemy, stunning them. This lets you replace a clobber if it procs.
Sear has a chance to increase physical damage taken by an enemy. This lets you do boss battles faster if it procs.
I personally found freezing way more useful than physical defense debuff. You aren't attacking the boss with elemental ults for the most part during boss battles anyway! Saving on a clobber feels much more convenient to me.
I'm excited to know what you guys think about the build!
First: Why? Well, I thought it would be funny to try and design pokemon that the FR dragons would design, based on creatures that live in their world, and then all the rest happened! My partner in crime @deer-rising contributed so much to this ridiculous project, creating the in-game pixel screenshots as well as the logos, which we'll get into later. Special thanks also to Arkeyr79 on Flight Rising, who created the Flight Rising Runes font that I used extensively in the magazine spread and on which Sourdeer based the logos and custom textwork. Doing all the layout and beating up the quality a bit to make it look like a magazine scan was a lot of fun. We were going for an overall Gen IV vibe because imo Gen IV and V were the golden era of fake pokemon leaks.
Crystafam Gem & Crystafam Gold
The game logos, designed and flawlessly rendered by @deer-rising. We went with "Crystafam" as the name of the game because this is a game made by Arcane flight featuring Arcane crystal capturing technology. The text in the first box of the magazine spread says... well the first line is just nonsense letters that look like they say "bitch cheddar". Um, because that's traditional. But then it says, "Welcome to the Umbra Region! Set out on your new Crystafam journey! Exclusively on the Stormlight Spark." (The Stormlight Spark is the name of the console it's on, which is Lightning tech, and a shoutout to the FR studio.)
Gem and Gold Protagonists: Fae and Mirror
Whereas Pokemon uses a lot of red, Crystafam skews more pink and magenta. Because Arcane! It also uses capture crystals instead of pokeballs. My choice to make the protagonists a Fae and a Mirror was pretty arbitrary, but Sourdeer's idea to base their colors off the dragons in the FR header banner was inspired lol. It immediately makes them recognizable, I think.
Moofio, Dilloom, and Mamertyke
The starters! Based on these guys:
They are Fire type, Nature/Plague type, and Water type (of course the types are the flight elements, not normal Pokemon types.) Mamertyke's name was originally Mammerteeny but we wanted it to be 9 characters so it got the Feraligatr treatment and got cut down to fit. I think that Moofio would evolve into a Fire/Earth type, and Mamertyke would probably be Water/Ice. If they didn't just stay pure Fire and Water.
In-Game Battle Screenshots and Vampuff
These are so incredible and they are made by Sourdeer. Look at the special crystal UI! She made a bespoke pixel version of the runes font! Custom type symbols. The sprites!!! Just outstanding work.
This bird is Vampuff, based on the Ragepuff familiars, and it is the regional bird (Shadow/Wind type). Unfortunately it was left on the cutting room floor because we wanted the screenshots to feature the starters. But it even has an animation!!!! Sourdeer is the best.
Professor Wispwillow and Rosmack
This is Professor Wispwillow, the professor who gives you your first Crystafam! Her partner is a Rosmack, the regional rodent Crystafam based on a Rodaque. I think it is Shadow/Water type and when it evolves it would dual wield bones to do the full jolly roger.
Nogdon and the Shade
Finally we have a couple hints at the plot of Gem and Gold. The Crystafam are being infected by a dangerous Shade incursion! This is Nogdon, a pseudolegendary Crystafam, and it has been completely Shadebound!! You have to catch it or KO it to save it! The Shade also seems to be able to infect capture crystals, uh oh... Nogdon is of course based on Xhaztol a Noggle:
That's pretty much it I think! Oh, also the vertical text on the left says "You have to get them." The slogan of the series. Get them. You have to.
In November of 2024 Flight Rising released the Everlux dragon breed.
Designing a new dragon for Flight Rising is always an interesting challenge. The dragons need too be unique, fit into a square, and have enough surface area across both their bodies and wings for separate patterns (genes) to go into both. This breed originated from the Light Flight, and we wanted to explore a more alien dragon design. I came up with several concepts for the breed, but a heavy-set caterpillar inspired dragon is the direction we ended up going in.
Before proceeding with a final, I decided to do some studies from reference to learn a bit more about caterpillar anatomy and how their segmented, soft bodies worked. I did several studies from photographs of monarch butterfly caterpillars. I took the opportunity to draw in my sketchbook. Up until this past year, I have not been doing a lot of practice studies, and since picking up the habit, I’ve found that I observe more carefully and learn more by drawing on paper. With digital art, it is very easy to cut, move, and warp drawings after the fact. With paper, I was required pay attention to get the proportions as accurate as possible from the get-go, and I think it helped me to draw more mindfully.
With some practice under my belt, I proceeded to tighter drawings that fit the Flight Rising dragon style and template requirements.
And here are the final templates used for the game! Between the drawing and final stage, the FR art team provided helpful feedback on the hatchling. It was determined that the pulled up leg was busy and read poorly, so it was streamlined for the final. Getting an additional pair of eyes on something is always a good idea!
I spent a good amount of hours working on this trip/advisor mimicking dragon bio template. link to my f2u asset thread, there's an auto-coding google sheet linked from there.
detailed image description under the cut.
[image: a screenshot or part of a dragon bio made to mimic a website. the header reads from left to right Tripadvisory, "Where to?" in brackets to resemble a search bar, Discover, Trips, Review, gem emoji, Gems, Sign in in square brackets. the line below reads Singers Cliff, Hotels (underlined and bolded), Things to Do, Restaurants, Flight routes, Travel stories, and then a kebab menu (three dots spanning a horizontal line). the next line, between two divs, reads: Windswept Plateau > Singer's Brook > Singer's Cliff. beneath that, in large bold text is the title "The Windflower Inn" - flush to the right on the same line is an @ symbol and a heart symbol. below the title are three more lines of text. the first begins with four green star symbols and a green dot then it sats 10 reviews | #1 of 8 small inns in Singer's Cliff. line 2 is an address, and line 3 is a speech bubble emoji and the text: Write a review. right aligned text reads (check availability). at the bottom of the screenshot are four images, a large one to the left, and three smaller ones to the right. the first, large, image is of a winding dirt and stone path leading through a garden to a cottage; the topmost small image shows a warmly lit tavern table with a plate of bread; the middle small image shows part of a bookshelf, and the lowermost small image shows a blue rug with a fancy light blue design on it. /end id.]
