Happy 30th Anniversary Xena: Warrior Princess!
Xena's feats make sense if you assume that every episode is adapted from Gabrielle's scrolls and she's just too transfixed by Xena's muscles to describe the fight scenes accurately.
one of the reasons why "what if people went on a road trip and it was weird" is one of the oldest story types is that a lot of sense of personhood has been, historically, tied to place. the weird road trip says "what if we went somewhere else, where no one knows us, and tried out being a different person".
Odysseus, the famous liar, goes on a weird road trip & over the course of it becomes several different people, and then comes home & is all those people as well as himself, wearing the echoes of those other people
Whatâs that quote? There are only two kinds of stories: a man goes on a journey, or a stranger comes to town.
hang on I gotta post something two weeks late and in poor taste
the âi am from russiaâ was a warning
I asked a taxi driver in Bucharest to take the quickest route to the airport. 10 minutes later we're doing 120kph the wrong way done the street car tracks when another taxi tried to pass us and dude just floors it. Never spoke a word, smoked 9 cigarettes over the 30 minute ride, never took off his sunglasses and blasting opera all the way. I look at it as paying 15⏠plĂșs tip to lose all fear of death.
Having lived in Bucharest I can tell you he would have done that even with out you asking

Also I know some people go nuts over the âIâd burn down the world to save youâ type of romance, but thatâs not Avatrice. I understand the appeal, of course: the hierarchy of love, the supremacy of adoration distilled into a single person, one single object of affection against which everything else is superfluous. But it is a form of separation, of objectification, which does not work with Avatrice. Ava was in love with life, in love with the world, before she loved Beatrice, and her love for Beatrice is just one manifestation of her love for life (and then it becomes her love for life: she gives her life up for Beatrice, so she can enjoy hers). Ava is so in love with the world that she becomes it: the object becoming the subject. There is no separation.
Beatrice was dismissive of life and of the world, saw it as nothing but a duty, a means by which to compensate for what some dusty old men told her was a sin. But she learned, through Ava, to start to love it, to dance, to drink, to laugh again. To love. Through Ava, Beatrice learns that she cannot love Ava without also loving the world, because Ava loves the world. She learns to see the world through Avaâs eyes and loves it too, because she loves Ava. There is no scenario where Ava or Beatrice would see the world burn to save the other. Their love is shaped by how they stand in the world, together, and without the world their love would not be possible. Of course they work together, over and over again, to save that world. Without it there is no them.

Buffy season 6 is insane. Itâs like what if someone you loved died a meaningful and accepting death but you couldnât live without them so you brought them back. And against all odds, they didnât come back wrong, but they didnât WANT to come back at all, and now they have to learn to live in this world again while resenting their friends and family for taking the death they willingly chose away from them. And existence is hell compared to death because in life they never get a break and never get to rest because theyâre constantly needed by everyone. And they canât chose to die a second time because they know what it would do to their loved ones who still never got over the fact that they died the first time. And also thereâs a musical episode.
I made this post while I was 2 episodes into season 6 and now I need to reiterate my feelings AGAIN. They make Buffy Summers APPLY FOR A LOAN approximately two weeks after she CLAWS HER WAY OUT OF HER GRAVE.
AVA i want to live SILVA + making the ultimate sacrifice
The appeal of Avaâs deepest wish being a normal girl, for her to then fall in love with a woman, and yet because she lives in a scifi universe where nothing can be taken for granted thatâs the most normal part in her life. Thatâs the part that makes her feel like a regular person. Thatâs the part that makes her feel like sheâs just human, experiencing normal human emotions. Thatâs the part that fulfills her deepest wish of being just, a normal girl. And on the one hand having the scifi universe as a backdrop is a nice way to put the queerness of the protagonist into perspective because really, who cares when youâve got angels and portals and different dimensions and the end of the world, but on the other hand itâs also very true to Ava because to her there really is nothing abnormal about falling for a woman, compared to falling in love with a guy. Where being queer is to so many people the part of us that makes us feel strange and different and outcast, Avaâs love for Beatrice is what brings her home.

âI made a list!â Ava trills. âA list.â âYeah!â Oh no. Avaâs grin is wicked. âOf all the things that turn me on when Iâm with a boy.â Jesus Christ. Good thing Beatrice lowered that bottle. âCare to explain?â she groans. âI call it the to do list. I figured if I do all of this stuff with a girl and I get turned on, it means Iâm also into girls.â
â
Iâm back!!! With the stupidest fic ever. Youâve been warned.
