Since you are here alone, should we talk about the members, good or bad?
The very first thought that came to my mind was ‘This is fun!’. Filming felt more quiet and comfortable alone, since it usually gets loud when the other members are here. But I kind of miss the noise in some way, so that I already miss our members.
Was there a specific look you were aiming for today?
I really like photoshoots in general. I don’t really try to look a certain way, but rather to have fun through it instead. I like trying out a variety of concepts and the specific style doesn’t matter to me as long as there is diversity in what I do. Maybe age-based concepts like '22 year old Kai’ and '23 year old Kai’ might be fun. Filming with a daily life concept sounds interesting as well.
What if you meet someone that you look up to? Have you ever thought of becoming something else?
I’ve never had such thoughts. I like being comfortable. Just being myself, Kai, is good as it is. I always do something intense up on the stage.
What are you usually influenced by?
I tend get influenced by many different things. Even the little things that I see while passing the streets. I saw a mask lying around on the floor while changing for the photoshoot just now. Even things like that make me think a lot. I cherish times during which I listen to music or contemplate things while I’m alone.
You read a lot and go to the theaters often, don’t you?
I usually read fantasy, but I don’t read self-improvement books. They’re not fun. With fantasy you get to imagine things. It’s different with films since you just watch them. It’s shown in front of you and in every moment something is timed to happen, but you can imagine all of that yourself with a book. I find it interesting how each of us have a different imagination on what a certain character of a book is like. I guess that’s why I read a lot. Especially books with mystery, fantasy, and those that create images in your head. I watch films without a specific preference, though I don’t watch romance.
Is there a reason for that?
I can’t watch them. (smiles) They’re not that fun. It makes me fall asleep. But I think there’s something you gain for every movie that you watch. I’ve looked at medieval clothing and came up with stage outfits, or take a character’s background and situation to make it into a choreography.
What about preference with weather or season?
I do, actually. Although it’s not really a big difference - I don’t have serious mood swings or anything. I prefer winter over summer.
Why do you prefer winter?
I was born in January. You layer clothing in winter because it gets cold. I like that warm feeling, which differs so much from feeling hot. I like seeing people bundled up in layers of clothing in the streets.
Do people usually call you mature?
I hear it often. I like making friends that are around the same age as me, and I think I’ve learned a bit more than others around my age because I’ve been a trainee since I was little. But I don’t have such thoughts as, 'You must do it this way’, or, 'This is the right way’, as though forcing others to think the way I do.
Not everybody matures from a group setting.
I was a very quiet boy. I never really talked but I became brighter since I came into the entertainment. There were fun people around, so I got to communicate more and experienced a personality change. I still can get emotional, blame myself a lot, and have trouble sleeping because there are too many thoughts in my head.
On what days do you have trouble sleeping?
I keep blaming myself if I dance at an important stage but end up making a mistake. Then I forget about that and drift off into a different thought. Thoughts like, 'Why was I born?’. Seeing the world with my own eyes felt very surprising back in elementary school. In middle school, I’d always wonder, 'Why me out of the many people out there? Why do I look at the world with a judgment like mine?’. Then in high school, I began to wonder if there was a reason to why I was born. Now I often contemplate about why I dance, and why I sing. These thoughts all chain together and that’s what makes me stay up at night.
Don’t people also call you 'sexy’ often?
The common response is 'Surprisingly bright’? People also call me kind. Not as in the kind because you’re kind, but more because I usually look cold or angry but people don’t think so when they get to know me. People don’t just call me “sexy” straightforwardly, but I think It’s a good thing to hear.
How different are you from who you really are to how people perceive you?
Everyone has a different point of view. One may judge my dancing by form, some may judge by emotion, and some may judge by power. I want to be a Kai that is different to everyone. I want people to think freely.
Do you have an unusual side you want to speak of?
I’m clumsy. I lose things very easily and I spill food as if there’s in hole on my jaw. I also have a natural greed for humor. I take things that don’t make sense in a weird situation and push it until it’s funny. It comes out naturally around people I’m close to, but I can’t do it when someone forces me.
You always seem to think about the stage, even when off-stage.
I’ve been stressed a lot because I think about the stage too much. I would always mess up and would progressively dislike my performances more as I cared more. Then I stopped worrying and decided I should just dance and sing while having fun, without any thoughts. It’s been working out pretty well, since I have fun with an open mind, instead of being hard on myself.
Is the stage always new to you? Or are you perfectly used to it?
Both. Generally, I feel comfortable and relaxed on stage, but there’s a different feeling to every time I dance. Sometimes I dance in a happy and fun way, and other times I dance to deliver emotion.
Your choreographies feel special because you’re always trying to deliver something.
In concert stages, I take the songs’ general mood and lyrics into consideration; in solo performances, I put in my own emotions. Title songs have planned out choreographies and it leads to cooperation with the other members, so there isn’t a limit as long as I get to sing a considerable amount of lines. Moves seem to be sad when the song mood is sad, but if I dance with a fun mindset, then people experience a fun emotion as well.
Looks like you’re dominating the stage.
The reason why dancing is fun is because it’s similar to a well-made assembly or puzzle. It’s not simply memorizing the choreography; there is a reason why arms go up or down. Maybe it’s because I think about all those things.
Do you have a desire to specialise in all types of dancing?
I don’t want to dance as if I’m trying to conquer. It’d be nice to take out a move or two as a tool when I want to be expressive with something.
Do you go out to see other artists’ concerts?
I don’t really have the time for it. I used to see ballet performances a lot when I was little.
Yes. I watch videos on YouTube. I literally watch YouTube everyday. Not just dancing videos, but funny ones as well. I watch dance videos on a massive scale. Other than famous dancers, there are small concerts, musicals, and old movies like 'Singing in the Rain’ that also have dancing moments. I like funny videos made by foreigners, and singing videos as well.
I’m also curious about your playlist.
I listen to EXO songs. Haha. I’ve been practicing singing a lot lately. For the last month I’ve been listening to Korean artists like G. Soul, Na Yoonkwon, and Kim Yeonwoo. Artists I’ll always like are John Legend, Travis Galand, and Boyz II Men.
Are you experiencing a transition in interest from dancing to singing?
I recently bought an audio card and microphone at a shopping mall and started to record with Logic Pro. I can’t perfectly make songs yet, only check the volume and toning up my voice to make it sound smoother. I’m having fun with it rather than stressing over it.
Your birthday is on the 14th. Do you know what day it is?
Diary day? I didn’t know. There’s White Day. What other days are there? Valentine’s Day. I haven’t done such a thing. I’ve never done it before.
Do you not care for celebratory days?
If someone takes care of me on my birthday, I try to do the same as well. It doesn’t matter if it’s not celebrated. I don’t find it important.
What do you do on your birthday?
I’ve been working every single day since début. Haha.
Where have you been wanting to go recently?
I was originally planning on going to Poland if there was nothing scheduled from August 1st to the 11th. All the famous dancers visit Poland to perform. I thought about going to a workshop to learn dancing, but in the end I couldn’t go.
Would you like to go with family? Or friends?
Both is fine to me. It’ll be fun with friends, but relaxing with the family. We’ll end up going to a resort if the trip is with the family, but somewhere fun if with friends. Going to an abandoned place for a scary experience might be fun too.
Is there a goal you’d like to achieve as of right now?
I always need to surpass myself. The person that I was yesterday. Even if there were good results in the past, I want to forget about them and start on something even better. It’s not about physical rewards that can be seen with the eye, but time that I can spend to convince myself. Promoting as an idol makes me happy and is enjoyable, but it also feels good to see myself improving every day. I want to sing and dance better than the me of yesterday.
Would you like to be Kai again if you were to be reborn?
Yes, because it’s fun. I want to be a ballerino as well since I’ve done ballet when I was little, but I have a feeling that I should be Kai. Maybe I can be born as a better Kai.
