Social Science Professional Organizations

NSSA: The National Social Science Association is one of the national professional organizations devoted to the interaction of social scientists through conferences, seminars, and publications. They have a $25 discount for students to join. They have summer and fall conferences that are held in different locations every year and the national conference is held every year in spring in Las Vegas. The publications are the National Social Science Journal and the National Social Science Technology Journal. The conferences provide resources on how to use technology and papers, discussions, workshops, and demonstrations that include all of the social science fields.

COSSA: The Consortium of Social Science Organizations is an advocacy organization that promotes attention to Federal funding for the behavioral and social sciences. UNL is a member of COSSA. It is a bridge between the academic research community and the Washington policy making community. They represent the needs and interests of social scientists and educates federal officials about social sciences.

NSCSS: The Nebraska State Council for the Social Studies is the local professional organization for social studies which is part of the social sciences. They have a $5 discount for students which brings the total cost of $10. The annual conference is held on October, 13 at Buffet Middle School in Omaha. The publications they have are their newsletters. They provide helpful information and ideas for teaching social studies.

The Digital Divide

Digital divide is a term that refers to those who have access to computers and those who don't. It was coined in the 90's when computers started to become more common in American households. As teachers we need to find ways to use technology to benefit the education of our students but not at the expense of those who do not have access to computers or internet at home. We need to find ways for all of our students to have access to the internet so that they are not behind those students who have computers at home. I believe this issue will not be as big for us when we finally become teachers, I am still two years away. I think that the "digital divide" in classrooms will be very small by the time I am actually teaching in a school. Access to internet has become more common as prices for computers and internet access has gone down. As the years go by the digital divide will become smaller in our classrooms and will not be as big of an issue.

Learning Styles

Learning styles do not exist because there is not enough scientific evidence from experiments that show they exist. Teachers should not change their teaching style to try to fit in with the way that the student learns; however, they should change the way they teach depending on the what they are teaching that day. If they are teaching something like geology, where you are studying the features of rocks, it should be taught in a visual way because that is how students will learn best. The way one learns is topic dependent; it does not matter what way they think they learn best. Also, teachers should not go away from the way they are accustomed to teaching because if they teach the way they are most comfortable, it will produce the best results when it comes to the learning of the students. I think it is important for teachers to change up the ways they teach in order to keep students interested. There are different ways to teach one topic, and it is important to not teach the same way everyday. If teachers had to try and teach towards learning styles, there could be many different types of learners in one class, and it would be impossible to teach to each student's learning style. Also, just because a student is not succeeding in a class like math or science is not because the teacher is not teaching towards their learning style, rather they are not succeeding because the student has difficulty with the subject matter of the class. No person has one learning style that is best for everything that they learn. Everyone learns different topics better in different ways, so it is better to say that people have multiple learning styles that are subject dependent. It is the responsibility of the teacher to teach the topic in the best possible way for all of the students in the class to learn, and to teach in a way that the teacher and students are both comfortable with. Teachers cannot teach to each individual's learning style, but they can find styles of teaching that are best suited based on subject matter.

The Flipped Classroom

In the flipped classroom students watch lectures at home. The students communicate with teachers and other students through online discussions.

Some of the positives are that it gives more 1:1 time with teachers and students, better teacher and student relationships, and allows students the chance to rewind lessons to master them. One negative that comes from this is the assumption that everyone has internet access which is not the case. Another negative is that you need to rely on every student watching the lecture at home which as all teachers know that is difficult to accomplish because there will always be students that won't watch the video and they will be even farther behind the next day in class.

I could use this in the future because it helps advance what I am teaching when the students already watch the lesson at home. An example of how I would do this in a history class I am teaching is have students watch the lecture and then the next day have some sort of activity that will help the students better learn and remember what I previously taught.
