So, I've been thinking about this for a while. We all know the scene in the last episode of season 2, where they're about to travel back to 2019 and klaus all of a sudden shouts, "wait!" And he looks around really distraught and confused for a second before running to grab the cowboy hat? Well, let's be honest, that was really fucking random. But my first thought (that I still think is right) was that Klaus screamed for them to stop because he realized Ben wasn't there and they can't just leave Ben in 1963. And he looks around desperately for a moment before he remembers that the person who has been by his side every day for 17 years is gone. So when he ran to get the cowboy hat, I was like wtf? But then I remembered that the attention of his entire family is on him, and Klaus is a master of hiding his feelings. He didn't want them to see that hurt, just like he never wanted them to see any of his pain, so he does the first thing that pops into his head. He sees a cowboy hat and he runs and grabs it. And, hey, he's Klaus, the guy who started a cult and was a drug addict and does wierd shit. So he bets on his family not questioning it, just like they never questioned the drugs and alcohol, and he was right, they don't. So he shoves that very raw grief down a little further and nods for them to go back. To leave the place where he had to say goodbye to both of the people he loved most in the world.

Anyway, that was my take on that scene, so if you need me, I'll be crying in the corner over there imagining what it would have been like to get an actual scene of Klaus grieving for his best friend and brother who HE HAD SPENT EVERY DAY FOR THE PAST SEVENTEEN YEARS WITH.
