hello! i’m katie, 28+, gmt +8, and you’ve stumbled upon the sideblog for my nanowrimo ‘22 novel, a fantasy/horror project with the working title at the edge of the world is a gaping maw.

summary:

Everyone has forgotten about the Moorlands. Except the family that lives there at the edge of the earth, generations after the world nearly ended.

The place isn’t quite right. The land is twisted and strange. No animal that ventures into the chasm emerges the same. And at night unsettling creatures stalk through the mists.

Leonora has seen everything. The only remaining member of the Ghast family tasked to defend the Moorlands, she’s been born, raised, and equipped to handle everything.

Until a stranger stumbles out of the Pit.

They’re bleary, delirious, and can’t remember a thing about who they are, and Leonora offers her help, and her home, as they recuperate. But as time passes, she realizes that there’s something strange about the stranger—and much more to worry about than she thought.

came back wrong trope but the character knows that they came back wrong. they’re so acutely aware of how different they are now from how they were before that it drives them fucking insane. they’re stuck trying to return to somebody that’s long dead. they can never be the person they once were. everybody around them knows it. deep down, they know it too, but they’re trapped in a cycle of their own making. of trying to revive someone that no longer exists.

i recently found out the funniest thing about big horses recently which is that for centuries humans have sworn that the feathering on big horse’s legs has been bred in there for a reason, and the reason given is usually something to do with how it helps keep the joints warm and safe when the big horse is doing hauling work in fields.

the thing is: it doesn’t appreciably do that, because the feathers wick up water and mud, which cancels out any insulation advantage they might hypothetically confer, and also it wasn’t even put there on purpose.

the Leg Get More Hair gene is just linked to the Bones Get More Big gene. when you breed any lineage of horses to have bigger bones–not just taller, but chunkier–the leg hair just happens anyway. so every single breed of draft horse has feathered legs, and even carriage horses like friesians get feathers once they hit a certain threshold of lorge.
