Detritus: I think dem rioters about done. Dem's all calling for a cab.
Littlebottom: They're chanting "ACAB", Detritus. It means "All Coppers Are Bastards"
Detritus: Heh. Well, they ain't wrong. I know I am, and Mister Vines would say he is.
Littlebottom: What about Carrot?
(thinking at Troll Speed)
Detritus: Well, ok. But then again... Nobby is bastard enough for two coppers.
Very precise Ahnk-Morporkian rioters: ACAOTAOBE!*

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.ā
Honestly bizarre that tomatoes get all the flack for ānot being a vegetableā because they're technically a fruit when:
A) There are a ton of fruits that get categorised as vegetables. Like this also applies to pumpkins, squashes and cucumbers.
B) The fucking mushrooms are standing there at the back of the crowd in this witch trial, trying to look inconspicuous because they somehow got into the vegetable club with no fucking controversy despite the fact that they're not even plants.
"technically tomatoes are fruits--" THAT MUSHROOM OVER THERE IS MORE CLOSELY RELATED TO A FUCKING SHIH TZU THAN IT IS TO LITERALLY ANY PLANT

I was working with an item today that just utterly flabbergasted a part of me (the other was deeply frustrated with the catalogue record AS SOMEONE APPARENTLY THOUGHT IT WAS PRINTED ON SILK, coming back to that in a minute) ⦠but ANYWAYS ⦠said item is a replica of a medieval manuscript prayer book THAT IS ENTIRELY WOVEN out of grey and black silk ⦠WOVEN ⦠text, images, intricate grey scale, WOVEN ⦠NOT PRINTED ā¦
And itās flabbergasting because itās from 1888, Jacquard machine, IT USED PUNCH CARDS to weave these intricate pages ⦠something like 400 weft per near square inch ⦠IT looks like a page of textured paper, but itās not, itās entirely SILK ⦠F*CK ā¦
Anyways ā¦
OKS Iāve since calmed down and found out that the reason they used āprintedā is because it is essentially printed by a computer ⦠in a weird way; when I import the record, Iām just gonna take that note out ā¦
BUT this is the item btw
WOVEN! WOVEN ON A LOOM using f*ckinā punch cards!
This portrait of Joseph Marie Jacquard was also woven with punch cards in 1839!
NOW GUESS WHY EARLY COMPUTERS WERE PROGRAMMED
WITH
PUNCH CARDS
yes youāre right, they used jacquard-loom techniques

i like the phrases "it's not for me," "it's not my thing," and "i'm not the target audience" because they're the most concise way to express "this thing that you enjoy has merits but idgaf about it" without being aggressive
fav thing that birds do that most casual bird fans have not seen a bird do: scratch behind their ears

I'd like to share with y'all a project I've poured my heart and soul into over the last couple of years: a database cataloguing every single older queer science fiction book I've managed to track down, consisting of just over 200 titles with LGBT characters/themes & by LGBT authors, spanning over a century (1880-2000) š
The database can be filtered by representation, subgenre, whether the book is currently in print, and more; additionally, it includes my own ratings & brief thoughts on the ones i have read, if anyone needs a suggestion on places to start! (or feel free to shoot me an ask for a more personalized recommendation)
How Mexicans feel about duendes too.
True. Most Irish people, as Norwegians do with Trolls, will happily let the 'fairies' be a thing to make tours for tourists and idle threats to make children behave. Most Irish people will have a very normal and mature explanation of fairies as a common folk mythology that expresses some dimension of Irish culture but are not, obviously, to be taken literally.
And most Irish people, if you ask them to move a stone from a fairy circle will immoveably, flatly respond with 'absolutely fucking not'.
Construction projects have had to halt and be abandoned for it.
At work me and a couple coworkers (black, white, and mexican) had a fun discussion on whether there are more ghosts at a hospital or a cemetery.
everyone individually took a moment to specify that ghosts probably aren't REAL real. then weighed in on where and why.
for the record my position was that there's probably way more ghosts in hospitals because that's where people die horribly, but since you can only see ghosts in dark, solitary conditions, graveyards at night is where the majority of ghost sightings occur. hospitals are usually well lit and busy, so even if they're crammed with ghosts the living are too damn busy to see them. meanwhile if a cemetery has even one ghost that followed her corpse there from the hospital, she'll be spotted because that's where all the ghost hunters go to look.
this theory was received as extremely sensible, and a coworker drew the conclusion that that's why abandoned hospitals are even scarier than graveyards. once the place gets abandoned then you can tell how much ghosts got built up.
we all liked this explanation a lot and explained it to everyone else all night. and of course, none of us believe in ghosts.
ā¦Iāll always reblog the frog.
