Kick Rocks Snow Boots!
Prepping for Spring with Seasonal Allergies~
In the words of a very good friend, “Oh snow boots, how I wish I could quit you.”
And truer words have never been spoken. With snow still working its way into the April forecast in both the Mid-west and Mid-Atlantic, I believe the consensus is for winter weather to kick rocks and make way for warmer, more consistent weather full of flowers and warm breezes wafting through the air.
For some, this may inspire a purge of unnecessary items (starting with those 2 year-old winter boots) and an OCD cleaning of your home known to most as The Spring Clean.
But here’s the thing—with spring comes pollen. And with pollen comes seasonal allergies. And with seasonal allergies may come itchy/puffy eyes, itchy skin, uncontrollable sneezing, wheezing, nasal congestion…the list goes on and on.
Ugh…the struggle.
So what’s the trade off, one may ask? Do we move to Alaska and keep the dreaded snow boots and minimal daylight hours to avoid allergic reactions? (Uhhh, NO!) Or do us allergy sufferers try tips that may help minimize discomfort during spring months?
I vote the latter—Alaska has NO chance in my book unless it’s a family cruise. Plus, nothing says springtime like tulips and daffodils!
So here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way to minimize my family’s seasonal allergic reactions. Best wishes to all those looking to ditch the dark days and winter coats for spring jackets and an abundance of sunshine!
Check pollen forecasts:
Familiarize yourself with pollen reports alongside the weather. Like an umbrella during rain, pollen reports may help you take proactive measures and gather necessary tools (allergy meds, tissues etc.) for daily activities.
Keep windows closed:
When pollen counts are high, keep your windows shut to minimize allergens inside your home and car. Use air conditioning to keep cool.
Limit time outside:
Pollen is typically at its highest in the morning (between 5am and 10am). If possible, plan outdoor activities once the count decreases midday.
Shower/change clothes when entering the home:
Allergens can attach to your clothing and hair. Decrease your number of reactions by showering and swapping your pollen-filled clothing for fresh clothing when entering from outside.
Keep your home clean:
Vacuuming can reduce the number of pollen residue tracked inside the home. Replacing air filters may assist in reducing outdoor allergens as well.
Don’t forget the pup:
Allergens can also cling to your pets. Wipe down your pets hair/fur and paws as they enter from outside. Remember to freshen up their bedding as well.
ALWAYS refer to your physician:
Remember to speak with your doctor about your symptoms and before experimenting with over- the-counter medications. Testing may be required to identify specific allergies. Your doctor can suggest suitable preventions, or prescribe medication for more severe cases.
What a great issue of Allergic Living Magazine!! Prepping my son for Kindergarten at a new school means MORE field trips...taking him outside of the comfort of an allergy-safe school zone. Thanks #allergicliving for great tips on managing school adventures. 👍🏾

Allergy Tip of the Day: Read EVERYTHING! It's that time of year where even your LIPS are dry. Your child may even develop irritation from licking their lips so much. This is just a friendly reminder to read absolutely everything! Certain lip balms include tree nuts, like this balm brand. If you're looking for relief, try sticking with travel sized hypoallergenic products that are easy to carry...like @vaselinebrand, Eucerin, or Aquaphor to provide relief while avoiding allergic reactions.💡 **Tips brought to you by My Amazingly Awesome, Itchy Little Dude and Carson's Kitchen.
