2019 fanfiction retrospective

Thanks to the wonderful @mia-cooper for these questions!

It’s been a busy year finishing up grad school, and admittedly I haven’t been reading much fanfic. Still, I want to take some time to praise my faves this year before I brag about myself, so I’m splitting this into two posts.

Best fics I’ve read in 2019:

War Torn

@curator-on-ao3 fuckin slayed this year. She gifted us with “Bad Ensign,” after which much fun ensued as it inspired others (myself included) to add our own stories of characters playing the game. Later came the excellent fics “Stargazing” (yay Mark!) and “War Torn.” Honestly, if I had to pick only one fic to be my favorite of the year, it would be “War Torn,” which connects pieces of canon backstories of Miles O’Brien and Kathryn Janeway together into one excellent war story that you most definitely need to read. It might just be one of my favorite fics ever.

Eye of the Storm

With the advent of a new chat activity in which we at @voyager-book-club take turns reading and discussing one another’s fics, I have been introduced to some good stories. One that really stuck with me was BlackVelvet’s “Eye of the Storm,” which is a brilliant, heartbreaking mindfuck.

Fractured

“Fractured” by @caladeniablue is incredible. It’s the first fic I’ve read that delves into secondary trauma. It doesn’t blame or victimize anyone, but rather shows some very human responses to the fallout of trauma suffered by a loved one.

Remembrance

“Remembrance” by @70thousandlightyearsfromhome is a beautiful little story in which Tom, with supportive husband Harry, visits the grave of a crew mate who died at Caldik Prime.

Friendship One AU

I know @jhelenoftrek and @klugtiger’s B’Elanna/Joe Carey “Friendship One AU“ fics were written in 2018, but this year I finally read them and I just... God, they’re so good. I need more in 2020, ladies. Pretty please?

let me just dump this here. 

So I’ve had the week off, and this is the result of binging Voyager. Thought I might do some doodle sketches around one idea – namely, Tom’s organised a soccer game for the next planet they set down on, and the crew take advantage.

The Captain and co. have a picnic, cause why not? Neelix brings enough food to feed the crew two times over, naturally. B’Elanna gets a bit too aggressive™ during the game. It’s a tad bit frightening. rip Dalby. My man Tuvok’s reffing, Chakotay didn’t quite understand the rules, Ensign Vorik is again the victim of B’Elanna’s klingon enthusiasm, Lyssa tries to be of some comfort while the Doc takes no prisoners. Icheb and Naomi climb a tree and things glow, B’Elanna wins the game for the Delta Kickers, and my beloved Janeway and Chakotay continue to be awesome together. Simples.

The Beating of Two Hearts by @klugtiger

Tom and B'Elanna enjoy each other’s company after a difficult day. Takes place after the race but before the “Just Married” scene in the Delta Flyer. 

 An E-rated Tom Paris/B’Elanna Torres Star Trek Voyager fic. This is not your run of the mill, slow sexy burn, and you do get thrown into Klingon-style sex straight away. We are talking about B’Elanna here, who knows what she wants, and Tom who understands her so well and loves her so much.

This is a man who knows his own strengths and limitations and accepts them gracefully. And he’d be a good man to have your back, too.

2. Not romantic so much as desperate lonely one night stand, but … Kathryn Janeway. See ‘unpopular opinion’.

3. I know you want me to say B'Elanna. Finish writing the fic and I might. Deal?

My BroTP for Joe Carey:

Tom Paris, actually. I think they have a secret code of signals to warn each other about B'Elanna’s moods. And I think they take the heat off each other’s tail too. Often, they commiserate afterwards over Irish whiskey.

My unpopular opinion about Joe Carey:

He and Janeway had an ill-advised night of passion right before the Planet of the Radioactive Murderpeople. She got knocked up. They have a daughter. Janeway did her usual ‘oops I time travelled’ thing, gave birth, and left the daughter in the 23rd century with her adoptive mother, Siobhan Tilly. I’m totally writing this fic, btw, and dragging you all down with me.

One thing I wish had happened with Joe Carey in canon:

So, recently I've asked for a beta in a fan thing. English isn't my first language and I don't usually go looking for spelling/grammar mistakes before the fic is entirely done, and, as the story is a wip, I asked for input about how it's coming along, specifying I wasn't really interested (atm) in correcting mispelled words and etc. But now they're commenting on it and pointing at every spelling and grammar mistake, and I have yet to see any plot-related concrit (which was what I was looking 1/3

for). I don’t know what to do? I’m not, like, saying I don’t appreciate it, because it’ll only help me in the long run, but I’m not feeling well about it, either? I don’t even think they’re doing it on purpose, I don’t doubt they’re just trying to help, but I have no idea how to explain that, even though I *know* that’s not what they’re doing, I feel like they’re nitpicking my mistakes, and I wanted to ask for a little advice from you and the blog in general. Should I try to tell them? 2/3

Should I assume I’m being oversensitive and get over it? They’ve been very nice about everything, and I don’t want them to think I don’t appreciate that they’re willing to help me. 3/3

Definitely talk to them. A relationship between a writer and a beta is only as good as their communication and right now you two are not on the same page (uh, metaphorically).

You told them that you weren’t looking for spelling/grammar help. You said you wanted their thoughts on your plot. They’re doing the exact opposite of what you asked. No wonder you’re not feeling good. 

It could be that you weren’t firm enough in your request. It might be that they think they need to do this first before they can do the rest. Whatever happened to get the signals crossed, only an actual conversation is going to clear things up.

Also, have you considered that they maybe just haven’t found anything to criticize plot-wise? That your story is just that good? (I mean, you still need to talk to them, because if that is the case, they should have told you so, and yeah, it goes against what you asked - you’re not being oversensitive.)

I’ve beta’ed a few times before, and I have to say, keeping communication lines open is CRITICAL in making sure everything works out. All the times I did it, before I even looked at their stories I asked them what they wanted out of it. (And I gave examples, like, “Spelling and grammar?” “Word usage?” “Helping with smoothing out awkward phrasing?” “Ideas on the story itself?” “Looking for plot issues like inconsistencies?” “Any or all of the above?”) Because ultimately, the Beta is there to help YOU write the best version of the story you want to tell. Now, it’s possible they just didn’t understand, or they thought it would be helpful anyway, but regardless, they need to know what is and is not working about the author/beta relationship. Hopefully it can be resolved, but in order for it to, you definitely need to speak up.

I have to admit I can understand the betas. I just can’t read something that is mispelt. Spelling, punctuation and grammar issues stop me in my tracks, and I can’t focus on the content until most of those are corrected and out of the way. Not that I don’t make any in my own drafts, of course. But they are not easy for me to ignore when reading.

I have to agree with @caladeniablue on this one. If I'm getting stopped every few sentences because of grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes, I literally can not focus on or understand the plot. My brain gets too hung up on details to comprehend if there big picture makes sense.

Communication is essential here, because maybe this beta feels the same way and actually needs the corrections to then give the author what they want. Both parties may be unnecessarily hurt and frustrated from this misunderstanding.
