Do you like Etsy?
Do you sell there, or buy from artists there, or want to?
Soon, something will happen at Etsy.
It’s the “Etsy Ads”, probably coming in April or so. Etsy wants to begin using ad networks like Google Ad, Facebook, and probably here on Tumblr too. They want to use the ads to help the Etsy Shops sell their stuff. It seems normal.
But.
NEVER CLICK A PAID ETSY AD.
Artist links and things are fine. But if it’s in some banner, in an ‘ad box’, running on youtube, or whatever, Don’t push it! But…but…“A Horse of Every Color Has An Etsy Store, Why Is It Bad?”
Because any sale made TO the person who clicks the ad and buys the product deducts 20% away from the artist in ad fees. It doesn’t matter if it cost Etsy a single nickle to run the ad, they’ll pull 20% out of whatever the price total on the thing that sold.
So like this:
You make a big pony plush to sell for $100
A person sees the plush in an ad, clicks ad and buys it
Etsy pulls a crisp 20 dollar bill out of the sale from you; you sold it for 80 dollars.
And this is on top of:
Etsy de-listing you or bottoming out your search results/store if you don’t ship free for over 35 dollar purchases. So if your $100 pony sold for 80, but you had to ship it for free cause it was over 35 dollars and shipping was 12 dollars…well you can see what’s happening to the sellers’ money–it’s all going down the drain. Who would want to sell under the yoke?
Ad networks are a tricky thing, there are thousands of books written about them every year. CPA (Cost Per Action, CPC Cost Per Click) can range from part of a penny to big dollars–so depending how Etsy plays its cards to spend a nickle click and get a 20 dollar bill out of their Seller’s-Shop…well that’s a sweetiecake deal for them isn’t it?
But what if you DO see an ad and WANT the thing?
That’s your cue to type “Etsy.com” into the browser bar & go right there! Search the item’s name! Explore the listing to see if it’s for you! Then, by all means buy the fun item! The seller will make the money, Etsy will get a fair slice of the money too & you’ll get your item and everyone goes home happy. 100% nothing wrong with that. The solution is EASY. Type in “ETSY” and go!
Spread the word before April, then spread it in April too if you like Etsy shops and artists & want to help them stay in business and in creativity. (As well as you help them keep prices lower for you too! Don’t make the artists have to raise the prices because of the new possible fees–keep it cheaper)
