Fabric as Flesh (2016) from Kelsey McGruer on Vimeo.
"Fabric as Flesh" is the video component of my multimedia installation titled "Full of Praise for the Statuary of the Greeks" (2016)
In this work the relationship between the female body and drapery as an art historical and gendered trope is examined through various media, including performance, photography, and sculpture. The female body’s relationship to drapery and its representation in visual culture has established a unique tension between concealing and revealing. What I find most interesting is when and why the decision is made to expose the female figure in visual culture. The resulting images often speak volumes about societies’ perspectives of the nude female.
Note: The title “Full of Praise for the Statuary of the Greeks” is referenced from the text “Drapery: Classicism and Barbarism in Visual Culture” by Gen Doy.
