At first the letter gets lumped in with fan mail that gets sent to the company building, so Jaehyun doesn't really get to see it at first. One of the other members - Kwangjin, maybe, or perhaps the manager, takes that weeks lump of letters back to the dorm, and Jaehyun's pile is left untouched for a couple of days. He loves fan letters, but sometimes he has to be in the mood to go through them.
"To. Kim Jaehyun," is all that's written on the envelope, along with the company's address. There's no return information, which is unusual - fans usually like to write their names; they also tend to use cute stationery, but this one was just a plain, sky blue envelope. He even hesitates opening it at first as absurdly paranoid thoughts enter his brain - what if there was anthrax? Or some other virus?! Or-
In the end, curiosity gets to him, and he decides that probably no one cares enough about N.Flying to send them such threats.
He's surprised when he unfolds the letter - the paper used actually turns out to be cute too, just that it didn't match the envelope. But more than that, the handwriting, he realizes, is quite familiar. Before he even reads through, he glances at the signature at the bottom.
The last time he'd run into Euijin had been a complete coincidence - a funny and bittersweet one, considering it was at a place he used to consider as theirs, at least during the brief time they dated. Or maybe even before that, when they were only friends. He frowns now because thinking about her still frustrates him. She'd tried to explain - mostly because he'd gone ahead and finally asked - why they had broken up, but he still doesn't get it. It's not like he's in love with her - although he's unsure if he still /likes/ her that way, but that isn't even really the point. At least that's what he tells himself. He just feels angry, and confused - and when even his older sister has a hard time comprehending what exactly went down, then he's pretty sure Euijin's the one who is in the wrong.
He's hurt, too, because all along it's felt as if she didn't really care that he's been confused. She left him hanging with no explanation, no attempt at making amends. Once again he considers throwing the letter away - she did say it was weird being friends with your exes, so maybe he should comply with that, even though his older sister has repeatedly advised for him to work things out even as just friends.
Too much thinking has never worked out for Jaehyun though, so eventually his eyes are drawn back to the words written on the paper. He remains uncharacteristically quiet and calm while going through what's written.
I hope the next time I see you it’s with a smile rather than an aching heart, is how she ends it, and Jaehyun thinks it's funny because as he reads that line over and over, he both has a sad smile on his face and a slight ache in his heart.
