Yes, she understood he wanted her to be safe, but it wasn’t the first time she was holding a gun. She is stubborn

     Wrenching herself from his hold with eyes burning in betrayal, Caterina cut an accusing glare at her mentor. He was meant to be wise. How could the mentor of heroes be so unknowing? Did he not understand that he was her family? Chiron had taught her of the Olympians on high, the great family of gods that ruled them all and although she knew not her own kin, she considered Chiron as a father to her from what she’d learned of the gods. Was she not the same to him? Was she only another of his wards in the many he’d taught for eons? Was she not special?

     “But I would stay not because you would keep me, but because it was my own choice! You’re sending me away because you don’t want me. You justify your actions and veil them with duty. You needn’t be so cruel. Not to me.”

The girl's anger caught him by surprise; he had become so used to her it was at times easy to forget that she was not actually human—her temper was that of the dragon, and must be dealt with appropriately. There was much about his world that she did not understand—Pelion had long since ceased to be what he would consider a suitable dwelling for any but himself, and he wished only that she could find better for herself when she left. And leave she must—this child was destined for things that he could not aid her in, a future that stretched far beyond the cave where he had raised her.

❝Caterina, my child, listen well to me. You are destined for things far greater than anything I could offer you here on Pelion. I cannot help you in your future, child; these are things you must find for yourself.
