If the MC uses a nickname in step 1, Tamarack isn't automatically set to use it and states she likes using their real name because it feels more genuine and special to her. However, in step 2, she's automatically set to using it, unlike before. Does this imply she's simply grown out of that mindset from when she was younger, or is there a different reason?

It is because Tamarack has grown out of that idea. She's learned that she should call people what they want to be called, not to go with what she had thought was the most "important" name when she was a child.
