Today’s #creepiest artifact is our Roosevelt Family Hairwork Bouquet made entirely of hair taken from Roosevelt ancestors.

This art form was popular in the 19th century. We don’t know who made this one, but the original owner was Cornelia Ann Roosevelt Thompson (1809-1895). Cornelia gave it to her daughter Ella Roosevelt Thompson and Ella’s husband Charles H. Oxenham (who was also a Roosevelt descendant).

This hairwork bouquet was sent to FDR in 1941 with a letter saying it was “one hundred years old.” As far as we know, FDR never displayed it. It is now part of the holdings of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library.
