I feel the need to ask this to probably the one of the oldest people in the fandom, but Isnt g*psy is a slur? I’ve been incredibly confused about this because I see a few people using it but a few people saying that they’ll never use it
To be honest with you, and having been in this fandom for almost ten years, I've been to many places on the internet (Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Wattpad, AO3, Ficbook, and probably others I've forgotten). This is the first and only time I've seen this question (not that it's never been asked before, at least I'm the one who's never seen this topic raised before).
This is the nomenclature used in the books themselves in the original language; most of the fandom just repeats what's in the books (as in my case). I really didn't know about all the issues involved, having discovered them now with your ask, And I imagine the same is true for a large part of the fandom. It's not a very well-known discussion in certain parts of the world (I speak from experience and give everyone the benefit of the doubt).
I also don't judge the book for using that offensive terminology, because we have to remember the historical context and the fact that the book is from the point of view of a rich, white, American boy with countless privileges who probably never even heard of these issues; after all, it's not part of his world, and in 1945 this type of topic simply wasn't widespread, if it even existed.
However, this serves as a lesson; unlike in history, we are in a more conscious era. I won't repeat the mistake again, and I encourage others not to do so either.
I love that part of Hollow City so much so I did a lot of research on the "gypsies" because I had a couple of ocs. "Gypsy" is a nickname for someone who comes from Egypt, because that's where everyone thought "gypsies" came from. In reality, they came from the middle east, likely India. They're called Romani people and there's a lot of branches (since they are a nomadic people that travelled through Europe) like the Dom people who travelled mostly to Africa, Rom to Bulgaria and countries in that region and Calé of Spain and Portugal. The inclusion of the Romani people in Hollow City is kinda weird because they have names like Radi and Bekhir which are more arabic names. By the time Hollow City is set, Romani people would have names that would allow them to fit in the country they were in. Like, the Rom people that moved to Bulgaria would have legal names in Bulgarian and their own real names that would only be used in private because they were either enslaved or killed wherever they went. The Nazis especially would have taken them to concentration camps, so it could be that they are refugees in Hollow City. I don't think Riggs did much research on them, I think he probably just went with all the misconceptions that everyone else is taught about them (fortune tellers, travelling circus etc.). "Gypsy" is definitely a slur and has been used hatefully against Romani people, but at the same time it depends on the person. Some Romani people have reclaimed the name and actually don't like to be called Romani. For example, where I live in Spain they go by gitanos which is just a Spanish version of "gypsy". But I think Riggs is wrong in calling them that and I'm not comfortable with calling them that either. ANyways I loved doing research into the Romani people because they have such a tragic but rich history and they are so influential in my country, but no one ever acknowledges them. Like, flamenco dancing was literally invented by gitanos who would dance for entertainment to earn money. But yeah, their history is not common knowledge at all so I get why a lot of people use that word wrongfully.

pleaaase i wanna hear more about your peculiar tales oc i love his design so much D:> what's his tale about? what's he like? TELLME everything!!
OMG AAA!!! First of all I literally love your art!! Seriously it gives me HUGE inspiration especially how you draw eyes second of all when I finish writing his tale I will be posting it on tumblr! But I do have a lot of little things about him :)
The reason why he’s drawn like that is because canonically there are no images of him except for paintings that his younger sister had done! and then for his design…omg I had so much fun designing him, His earrings are based off of a pair of earrings that I actually own and another pair of earrings that I had saw at Ren fair. And his hair is really cool and fun to draw too!! mostly because it’s based off of my own hair when it was long, and I’ve actually been working on a drawing of him and his sister!! that’s just a few things that I could think about him off the top of my head, but I’ll definitely make a longer post about him soon!!
Another little fun fact: he’s based off of a ink drawing of a wolf that I had done as a piece for art class (even though he’s a coyote) back in the 6th grade and the first drawing of him that I had done in quite some time since then is actually on a napkin lmao (the drawing on the napkin inspired me to turn him into a full character)
