with little work left to do, you wandered over to your newest coworker's desk, leaning over the walls of his cubicle. he seemed more focused than you'd ever seen him before. there was no way he was working.
without looking up at you, hanamaki smirked. "you gonna stand there and admire me or are you gonna say somethin'?" he asked.
you blinked. "i thought you were working!"
finally looking up at you, he chuckled. "i know i only started two months ago, but i haven't changed for the better." he leaned back in his chair. "what are you doing here? slacking off?"
"i did most of my work, actually!" you huffed at him. "a little birdie told me it was your birthday!" you held out a box for him, grinning wide.
"did you just pull that out your ass?" he furrowed his brows.
you laughed. "no, idiot! open it."
he hummed, looking at you suspiciously. "okay…" he said. he wasn't very careful in unwrapping it. "a mug?" he asked, looking down at it.
"take it out of the box." you spoke slowly, teasingly.
he rolled his eyes, grabbing the handle. he brought it up to his eye level, blinking as he processed what he was looking at. then he gasped. "hey!" he exclaimed. the mug said, 'world's okayest coworker' with three out of five stars colored in just under the words.
you laughed, covering your mouth so you wouldn't disturb anyone else. "what? don't like it?"
he huffed. "actually, i love it, and i'm gonna use it every day." he playfully glared at you. "you know, this is no way to treat a guy on his birthday."
"well," your heartbeat started to pick up. this was the part you were most nervous about. you lost sleep thinking about it. "i might have another gift for you."
"might?" he raised a brow.
"if you come with me after work." you tried to keep your cool. it would be endless teasing from him if he found out you were nervous.
you'd only known each other two months, but… you felt like you instanrly clicked. your boss told you to take him around and show him the ropes, and you were dreading it at the time, but he instantly brought your mood up.
the second you met he was cracking jokes and bantering with you. he was just so effortlessly funny, it made you want to keep him around. you knew if a joke was on purpose though. he'd huff out a laugh before telling it, or it'd be silent between the two of you and he would just start talking complete nonsense.
when the first month went by, you realized you wanted to spend so much time with him. you wanted to work with him, eat with him, take him home to hang out or go to his. you wanted to completely be a part of his life.
you'd been sitting on these thoughts for too long. when your boss, noticing how close you two had gotten, told you when his birthday was, you started planning. the amount of time you had, two weeks, didn't help the nerves at all.
"sounds good." hanamaki smiled wide. "it better be good!" he joked.
you gently pushed off the wall, standing up straight so you could return to your desk. "you'll see." you sang, walking away before he could notice just how nervous you were.
seriously, the teasing would never stop.
somehow, you willed the day to go by fast, but you weren't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing.
you were finishing up some work when hanamaki showed up at your desk, wordlessly leaning against it and crossing his ankles together. you couldn't speak. if you did, you'd stumble on your words, and you wouldn't even be able to get your confession out. you could save the stumbling for later.
you had it all planned out, actually. you were going to make him dinner, and then you were going to give him his favorite pastry from his favorite bakery. as you were eating dessert, you'd tell him. you just had to relax long enough to be normal, and it would all work out.
you stood up and got your stuff ready, nodding at him to start walking. as you walked side by side, you looked at him. "how's your birthday been?"
he hummed. "well, i got one really shitty gift," he nudged you, "but pretty good otherwise." he grinned.
"my gift was very thoughtful!" you exclaimed.
"hardly!" he laughed. "i showed my friend, mattsun, and he lost it! he thinks you're the funniest person ever for that."
you grinned wide. "i'm liking this mattsun." you said happily.
"yeah, you would." he scoffed. "i'm never letting you meet him, you know."
"why? scared?" you teased.
"yes." you both laughed. when it died down, he spoke again, "so what's the plan for tonight?"
you'd just gotten over your nerves too. "uh, w-well, maybe some dinner is on the agenda." you tried to joke. he raised a brow.
he hummed. "dinner sounds nice. you buying? since it's my birthday and all." he grinned innocently.
"actually," you blushed, pretending to look at some fountain in the distance, "i'm cooking."
"you are?" he asked excitedly. "i didn't know you knew how!"
"of course i know how!" you shot him a playful glare.
he responded with a smirk? "you're blushing. what's wrong? are you lying about knowing how to cook?" he teased.
"i know how to cook!" you exclaimed, a bit too defensively.
he blinked. "are you okay?" he asked.
"no, i-i'm fine." you sighed.
"i didn't take it too far, right?" he furrowed his brows.
"no, of course not!" you said quickly. you stopped walking, taking a deep breath. there was no way you were letting the rest of the night go on like this. "um, this is not how i wanted this to go. i had it planned." you mumbled. he looked at you curiously, but you really didn't think you could look at him. you settled for staring at your feet. "i want to cook for you for your birthday, and because… i really like you."
he was now stood right in front of you. one of his hands took one of your own, while the other lifted your chin so you could properly face him. his cheeks were light pink, and he had a very big smile on his face. "you must be really bad at knowing when someone's flirting with you." he teased. you blinked at him, completely lost. "i've been flirting with you this whole time, i think." he chuckled. his first kiss was to your head.
he nodded, the second going to your nose. "i've liked you this whole time. i'd go as far as to say we're soulmates." the third went to your cheek. "don't you think so?" he asked, his lips grazing yours.
"makki…" you mumbled, unable to hide your face or pull away. you were frozen.
the grin stayed on his face as he pressed his lips against yours, and even after that. his free hand gripped your waist, and yours was gripping the collar of his shirt, making sure he stayed against you as long as possible. the hand holding yours squeezed, and you squeezed back.
he disconnected his lips from yours, to your complete dismay. "you know, you were my birthday wish."
"what?" you furrowed your brows.
"this morning, i got myself a small cake, put a candle in it, and made a wish that you'd finally get the hint."
"so you're not then." you deadpanned.
"aw, c'mon don't be like that." he laughed. "let's go make me dinner." he said happily.
you pressed a quick kiss to his lips, then nodded. "so, how's your birthday now?" you asked.
"best birthday ever." he nodded, a bit of a bounce in his step as the two of you continued walking.
dinner was great, and dessert was better, but nothing could beat waking up to him the next morning, knowing he was thinking the same thing.
a/n ꕤ YAYYY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAKKI omg im so glad i got it done i was worried i wouldnt and then suddenly i was like woah hold on this is 1300 words ! they all came out of my heart with my love for him. i feel like he's not one of the ones im like OBSESSED with but i do still love him and the rest of seijoh4 a lot. hes definitely the most underrated of seijoh4, but at least a lot of the time wherever mattsun is, makkis there too! its mostly a threesome and i love that, and clearly wherever makki is, mattsun is there too, i just HAD to mention him. okay sorry im done yapping LMAOOO HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAKKI! (ok one more thing oh em gee 2 makki fics in a row! it doesnt feel like it cause ive been writing a lot of stuff that i havent posted but its so fun!)
