Medusa smirked and walked into the dim moonlight. “I was merely contemplating in the shadows, young knight.”
"I suggest you contemplate elsewhere. As enchanting as the shadows may be, this corridor is only meant for a select few currently, and I don't believe you are one of them."
"Good man" Antony smiled at him, brushing his hair back, "I’d like you to be her personal guard when she recovers. We both trust you, and she likes you, which is quite important. If you just keep her close when she’s out on the grounds or out of the castle… Obviously this job is more trying and it would come with retribution."
His eyebrows rose in slight amusement as he observed the young King before a chuckle erupted from the back of his throat. "Your Highness, milady is my family. I would have refused to have left her side regardless of the assignment given. Even the Gods would have found it difficult to drag me away."
"Wise, old souls, hm?" She smiled a little at the thought and then shook her head. "I’ll settle for a fair soul. A brave one. I want to keep them all safe, you know? My siblings, the knights, the people. I thought accepting this position would be the best way to do all of that." At his explanation Ash hesitated a moment before nodding. She hadn’t thought of that. "It’s a good idea. Perhaps I’ll just write her a note to accompany the soup, then. We’ll be sisters soon enough, I’d like it if she knew I was thinking of her at least." But when he answered her question about the last time he’d eaten, she frowned. "No time? You must make time, Amos. I admire your devotion but you’ll be no good to anyone if you’re half starved." She offered him a warm smile.
His head dipped down slightly to affirm his answer to her question silently. "Unfortunately, we live in a world were Royalty, or those whom are related to the Royal family are never safe, but you could say the same for any person. The threats are just must different." Amos once again gave a small nod at his words. He had an opinion about the marriage, but did not plan to vocalize it to anyone. Regardless, his lips turned into a smile at her words. "I taste milady's food before it goes to her. I have no trust to anyone currently. Not while she is ill.. Until she has recovered, I assure you I shall be fine."
"No need to stand outside, Amos. I do trust you, as you know" He said, sighing, "I only worry about her. I do not know where this illness has come from, and she is not fairing well. I’d like to protect her in anyway I can, you know?"
"Your highness, if there is any life I care for even more then your own, it is Lady Alycia. She has been my family longer then most. I've kept her safe for as long as I have been in her service and this is the first time I have ever failed. So yes, I know."
"Ah, true. Some I’ve talked to are scared of Antony, of what sort of ruler he’ll be. Others think he’s just young and he’ll find his footing. Whatever the case may be, I’m having a hard time seeing him as anything besides my older brother. I’m only hoping he didn’t make a mistake choosing me. I’m going to try to make sure he didn’t." A glint of determination flashed in Ash’s eyes but vanished as she took note of Amos. "I’ve been taking soup to some of those who’ve gotten sick. Maybe I’ll be by later with some for Alycia. And… you. Even though you’re fine. Have you eaten recently?” Ash knew how devoted Amos was to his ladies and she wondered if he’d left his post at all lately.
"Ashlynn, they some are born with wise, old souls. You are one of them, the King has not made a mistake in putting you in your position. As for the new King gaining his footing, they are correct. Only time shall tell what sort of ruler he shall be." But even you need to be safe. "While I trust you in her presence, I will have someone else take it in. Limited access to those who might be immune and unknowingly be caring around some sort of worse strand." He muttered, eyes flickering over her shoulder for a moment before shrugging himself. "A day ago perhaps. The maids drop by water on occasion. There just hasn't been time."
"No, for the love of the gods, don’t bow!" Ash laughed as she shook her head. "It’s strange, isn’t it? But when Antony asked I didn’t want to refuse him." A few more steps and she was beside him, laying a hand on his shoulder. She kept her eyes on Alycia’s door as she spoke. "No, it’s understandable. How is she? I haven’t seen her since I hear she’d fallen ill." Ash felt a bit guilty for it. "And how are you? Not feeling sick?"
"No bowing then." He replied, smile growing only slightly. "Most would be considered mentally unstable for refusing a new King's offer. He has yet to establish himself as a ruler. No one knows how he will react to such a thing." At the hand on his shoulder, he tensed slightly. His body was truly exhausted, but that wasn't something he would, or even could admit aloud. "Not many have seen her. The King and a handful of others. She is... just ill, and I am fine."
Antony nodded once and folded his hands behind his back. “Of course, Amos. Speaking of her, you must have heard that her health has declined quite rapidly of late” He entered the room, shutting the door, “I would be more comfortable if you were to guard her door, Amos”
His brow furrowed slightly at his words. Originally, Amos had brushed his ladies illness off as stress, but when more and more cases began to appear, the creasing of his brows seemed permanent. The Capitol, it would seem, was a curse. His shoulders rose into a shrug. "I'm guarding her none the less, but if it is her door you wish me to stand outside of like a common guard, your highness, I shall."
"Sorry, Amos. I meant to speak but I’d lost my train of thought. I have so many things in mind lately that it’s become hard to keep track of it all." Ash moved closer, stepping where he could see her fully. "Someone’s grumpy."
His eyebrows rose slightly as he regarded her before his lips curled into a smirk. "Army Advisor now, hm? Am I required to bow?" Eyes trailing over him once, he nodded his head in the direction of his ladies door. "People are falling ill, how would you wish me to act?"
Alycia rose her head and walked out of the shadows, glaring down at him with the ferocity only a woman could muster. “Amos,” she said curtly.
His lips twitched into a small smirk at the sight of her. "Milady, apologies." Bowing his head, he moved himself away from the doorway and took a step toward her. "Are you angry with me for being so rude?"
"I hardly see how standing by your door is hiding in the shadows, Amos" Antony said, entering the room, "Don’t look so suspicious, I am here on behalf of Alycia"
His lips curled up slightly before bending forward into a small bow. "Apologies, your Highness. If I had known it was you, I wouldn't have been nearly as rude. It just seems that as of late, people are fascinated by our future queen and enjoy lurking in the shadows."
