Mysteries force a man to think, and so injure his health.
-- Never Bet the Devil Your Head, Edgar Allan Poe
I'm rereading random parts of the inheritance cycle for fan art reasons, and I think I said this in my brisingr post but I'll say it again; i hateddddd how nasuada felt lonely and a loser when she saw roran and katrina together. Just another reason why I never liked how they were apparently put on a pedestral when every other character was much cooler than them ARGHHHHHH
Reminder that roran and katrina are together because eragon and nasuada were working their asses off to support them in any way!!!! ARGHHHH
And yeah after ten seconds nasuada snaps back and she's like okay but being the leader of the varden is so much better (it is) but i hate that roran made her feel this way with his perfect life and perfect everything BACK OFF
Uhhh i barely remember anything about the inheritance cycle BUT this post made a single Recollection appear in my head.
so early in the series, katrina is cool because she defies her family and chooses to be with roran. And roran is cool because he’s a guy from the middle of nowhere who doesn’t have any crazy skills but is a nice and brave dude and that screams of literary potential.
but pretty soon, roran is going 1v300 with a fucking HAMMER and katrina isn’t doing anything at all. but don’t get me wrong - my issue isn’t that katrina becomes a wife and mother. My issue is with the extent to which they are both praised and respected for creating this traditional family dynamic. To the point of other characters either being jealous of it, or wishing they could also be as cool as roran and katrina are for… being married and normal, i guess?
i dunno. Is this fair to say? Can any inheritance cycle fans confirm or deny? I truly can’t remember shit about roran and katrina i’ll be honest 😭
yep you remember correctly!! maybe it's the fact that no main character is having normal life experiences and so in contrast roran and katrina seem as exceptional as a dragon flying in the sky, they represent everyone's longing for a normal life, which is cool, but come on now. i mean it's cute and sad that both eragon and nasuada still long for a normal life despite it all, that no matter how great they become, how praised they are, they can't have what roran and katrina have because they are too busy saving everyone from a crazy evil king but oof WHO CARES ABOUT THE FARM IN UTAH RIDING A DRAGON OR RULING OVER THE HUMANS IS SO MUCH COOLER SORRY!! SORRY!!!
Said it and will say it again; Roran has the vibe of a youtuber who couldn't handle the fame and it got to his head. Guy litterally said to Orrin that he could insult whoever he wanted. In a more realistic plot regarding kings and stuff, at that point he would have been up for execution. Paolini is just playing favorites so hard there.
He could have had Roran as a contrast to Eragon, being a normal guy. Alas, he doesn't write Roran as normal (pointing at the 200 kills for 2 example, which is not only unrealistic but also mildly horrifying if one thinks a bit harder about it), plus him always getting special treatments.
LMFAOOO YES EXACTLY!!! he's supposed to be the normal one but he very much isn't, because a normal character could barely survive the levels of danger the other characters were exposed to!!!
Also, roran was a really interesting character in the second book. Sure, he’s definitely protected by plot armor, but he has plenty of memorable scenes: his speech to convince the people of Carvahall to flee, the various strategies for sneaking into Terim and stealing the ship, and his contribution to the final battle.
What I liked most was his inner conflict about the people he’s forced to kill for the village’s survival. Starting with the third book, this aspect is lost, and only eragon seems to be truly tormented by the idea of killing, while roran always uses the “Katrina is more important” card and calls it a day, which is the exact same character trait that’s considered negative and wrong in murtagh btw. this also reminds me how badly i want them to meet because i'm sure they would get along well for a lot of reasons (and i think eragon is the odd one among the three)

Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

Being a lesbian fujoshi is such a labyrinth. I want to see these men work through internalised homophobia in a way that distances me from gender violence. I want to see violence done to them with the thematic catharsis that has been used to excuse the artistic objectification of women's bodies in media. I want tenderness that transgresses the confines of masculinity. I want to wear the suit of their masculinity and all the romantic transgression that allows. I want stories without people like me in them, which are absolutely about people like me. I did not ask for the vocabulary of someone who loves men, but I have it. I did not ask for a barometer which determines abstract male attractiveness, but I have it. I came into my queerness by hiding behind beautiful boys so I could talk about queer love with other queer girls on the internet. With all the misogyny and fetishisation that implies.
