I know the “we’re not so different you and I” type villain speech has become a cliche but The Batman actually shows you how ruinously is effective it can be with the proper set up. Like we have Batman deciding that maybe the police chef deserved what he got once he learns that he was a dirty cop, when we break into the riddlers home it’s evident that he lives as a recluse, just like Bruce Wayne. The style and content of the riddlers journal is reflective of Bruce’s Bat-logs, and his grand scheme is painted on the floor evocative of Batman’s own floor painting brainstorm session.

So when we get to the confrontation in Arkham asylum and Edward says he was inspired by Batman, even though this is the first time they met we can see it. And Bruce can see it too which is why he is so disgusted by the riddler (were not the same you’re a freak), he’s forced to look into a mirror and see how others see the Batman
