In this evaluation, I will be writing about what this project is. What I proposed, how my pitch went, the production and feedback from my peers. I will be writing my evaluation in a content based format (Meaning each section of the unit will be categorized, example: Proposal).
The unit we were working on was about the history of animation, how animation played a prominent role throughout history from ancient civilization pottery to tell a story to 21st century 3d animated movies. Our unit was set up in various tasks like the history of animation. The main focus on this unit however was to produce a 2d based animation and understand the different forms of devices used to produce animation.
The proposal part of this unit was to present an idea that I wish to develop. Although my animation turned out different than my proposal, I was proposing an idea in a form of an actual show instead of a teaser that my 2d animation came out to be. What I proposed for my animation was a farm themed 2d animation with a story focusing around one new born chick who is on an adventure to maturity, making friends and seeing the world.
My proposal also includes what kind of show it will be, how long each episode will be and what tools/software I will use to produce it.
The Pitch/Generating Ideas
During this portion of the unit, I was generating ideas of how the main character of my production look like, what his name is and his personality. I was also working on a pitch to present to Oly and group of second year students of my production and where my inspiration for developing my 2d production came from. I feel that my pitch went well; I was given very good feedback from those I was presenting to. They did help me finalize my ideal show by asking if my show would be along the lines of Tom and Jerry (using music and sound effects to signify emotion and scenery) or use voice roles.
Because of that feedback, it made me think it would be easier to do a Silent film style animation. I was happy with the feedback and started to rework my production to the feedbacks I was given.
When the production started, I started with creating the farmland location. Since my work was to be developed in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects, it was important to make sure how I create the scene looks how I envisioned it. The first thing I needed to make it obvious to the viewers would be adding a farm barn which I probably spent 30 minutes developing because of painting little details into the barn like the wood work and black outline around the barn to give the cartoon feel to it.
The majority of the first scene was made in total of 6 hours, this includes to windmill which I did research and looked at images of how certain barns and windmills look to get the designs and I made 2 different layers just to create the grass because of wanting grass to appear in front and behind the fences and windmill to create the 3d/realistic feel.
When I took the 1st scene into After Effects, at first the layers would not go into the composition but I managed to get it sorted by realizing I just dragged all the layers in instead of selecting the composition version of the layers, a slight human error.
Production: Character Design
My 2D animation character went through 3 stages before a final design. However, because of my teaser, the main character is not fully present yet but the mother is. I spent 10 to 15 minutes designing the mother character for the 2nd scene and I looked at a few photos of chickens to get an idea of how one normally looks. Because of how diverse chickens can be in terms of colour, I feel my chicken design is reasonable.
Production: After Effects and Music
The music was the last thing I had on my mind when it came to this production. What I did was animated my 2D animation in Adobe After Effects because of my experience and knowledge on various tools. It was quite simple with some of the animations like the windmill spinning because that was just rotating the blade layer but I did not want it to go too slow or too fast. Creating the zoom for the scene was quite annoying because it involves using a camera but the scene has to be made in 3d in order for the camera to zoom in and out.
When it came to the music of my 2d animation. I wanted something farm like but not unappealing to today’s youngsters. I manage to find a music file on my computer (I did not create the song) and only used the 1st section of the track which quite surprisingly synced in really well with the scenes.
Last Minute Changes, Personal Feedback and Group Feedback
The last minute changes to my 2d production was the cancellation of additional characters, the voice roles, sound effects and pilot episode. Instead I created a teaser trailer for Lil Chick because it will draw attention and depending on interests, I will start the development of a pilot show when I have time.
My personal feedback on this production would be I rushed some parts like character designs and sceneries. My art design is not to a professional standard but then again I am not a 2D kind of person which explains the basic design. I think I could have added more animation into my production but due to having a good computer with weak processing power with adobe programs, the more I would have spent on adding more in, the longer the rendering would have taken but I am glad that I own Adobe After Effects and Photoshop at home so I could work from home. I will keep my opinion on what grade I would get out of this evaluation because I am always critical on my 2d based works but I feel I did reasonably well in my 2d production.
I was also given positive feedback from a couple of peers from the class, I asked for critical feedbacks and each person has not mentioned any negative parts I have mentioned. One commented on how well the music syncs with the transitions between cuts but I learnt about synchronization in Media last year.
The total time frame of the video is 35 seconds with 31 seconds of the production being visual based and 4 seconds being the outro. Total development time of this entire production is over 18 hours counting both inside and outside college.
