Daily music making challenge - retrospective
So I decided to cut the challenge short after 2 weeks instead of the intended duration of 4 weeks. The main reason for cutting it short is because I feel I've gained what I set out to, which is to better understand my creative process, and to shake up some long-held beliefs about how generation of new ideas should occur.
I think the challenge served well as a reminder that you don't necessarily need much time to generate an initial idea for a track, although many of the ideas won't make it past that initial stage. I guess the main lesson I've learned is that it's better to start over if I feel a track doesn't work, rather than trying to continue refining an idea which isn't made to work. There's also something to be said for persevering when one is stuck with a particular track, but I think my approach has tended too much towards this tendency, and not enough towards an "ideas are disposable" type of mindset.
All in all it's been a successful challenge, and I might well do another one at a later time. Right now however, I feel like fleshing out some of the ideas I've already come up with over the course of this challenge, rather than continuing to create initial ideas which over a longer period of time becomes increasingly unfulfilling.
