According to the Kyoto Costume Institute, which owns a similar two piece version of the suit, “In the mid-1990s, high performance gaming machines like Playstation and consumer-oriented operating systems, especially Windows 95, became generally available, and ordinary individuals started to use digital technology such as CG and the Internet. Nakagawa and Lica had a keen sense of the changes going on at that time, and used CG to design the patterns for this suit, ensuring that the woven pattern faithfully reproduced even irregular breaks in the lines.”

This image to me focuses on societies portrayal and objectification of the female body. With the males looking onto woman whose backs are turned it sort serves as a direct metaphor for how men view women in society.( Furthermore, I can appreciate how the camera which appears to be paired with a 50mm lens(or something near it) (50mm being considered equal to the human eye) allows the viewer, me, to sort of place myself in the position of a man looking on to this show. I feel this aspect alone calls into question the viewers role in this superficial behavior that is displayed in society that is not independent of anyone really. Everyone has fallen into the behavior of objectifying and sometimes sexualizing not only the other sex but also anything that differs from what the viewer considers normal. This idea is one that is commonly expressed in Diana’s work and is personally of much interest to me. The use of black/white Is especially successful in this image; adding to this concept of timelessness and calling on the idea that objectification is something is and always has been a commonality in the world. Lastly, in terms of framing, Diana gives the women in this image power by placing them on a higher level. This is the result of displaying the male gaze but I also think it speaks to superiority, inferiority, judgment, and social norms.
