¥ Wide brown eyes met Jugram’s gaze as his chin was lifted. His pale face tinted pink with embarrassment and his eyes held the look of a deer in the headlights. The small shinigami almost shook as soon as the gentle finger lifted his chin. He was frozen, afraid to run, afraid to move. Rin was clumsy and prone to running into others, but here and now he was incredibly nervous for the Quincy’s response.
“It is my fault… I wasn’t looking. I-I should apologize for running into you,” Rin averted his gaze, uncomfortable with keeping eye contact. He was always uncomfortable holding someone’s gaze, but right then it was more out of his own anxieties about Jugram.
In his frozen state he didn’t move, in fact he stiffened as the Quincy gently fixed the lap coat’s position on his slight frame. His touch was so gentle that if Rin wasn’t hyper aware of the situation he might not have felt it. His mouth popped open in a small “o” shape as he watched the Quincy tuck his long locks back behind his ear. His cheeks darkened their color and he found his doe brown eyes meeting the blond’s again.
“I-I was just heading to my personal lab t-to check on something. It is just a side project,” he stammered out, “Kurotsuchi-taicho allowed me to take some time for it as the communication lab is running smoothly.”
Rin found himself almost rambling through his nerves. At least he wasn’t explaining his project yet. If he got onto that he might not get back to it in a timely manner.
“Ah, please call me by my name Quincy-san. It’s Tsubokura Rin,” the brunette finally said.
now that jugram could properly look at the shinigami’s face, it hit him harder than ever before just how weak his newly metamorphosed soul truly was. thousands of years of rigidness and calcification crusting over the horribly fussy and delicate pupa of his heart were crumbling away, bit by worn and weathered bit, and at once the large eyes of the person before him instantly cleaved off a chunk. it was ruthless, terrifying… and yet jugram wanted him to peel off more, please. it hurt in a titillating way. jugram wanted to sit with him immediately, and talk for hours about at all. or curiously touch his bouncy looking skin. tame all his sweet flyaway hairs.
rin didn’t even have to forgive him. all jugram wanted was his time.
oh. jugram would be in so much trouble. the butterfly wings attached to his heart were stubborn, but inextricably delicate. he was fluttering along in a goddamn landmine.
but, oh. he had to try, didn’t he. he had to try something.
“mm. mm.” jugram hummed at tsubokura’s explanation. he wasn’t hardly convinced, however, that the young man had any need to bow at jugram, and he still wanted to make that very clear. it wasn’t like tsubokura was any more far removed from being jugram’s superior in his second chance at life as any other non-officiant shinigami, but jugram was privy to his skittish nature. it wasn’t entirely uncommon for the other shyer or more pervious of the shinigamis to offer him his presumed due respect. still… jugram felt the same way.
the echo of a quickening heartbeat sounded off in jugram’s own ears as tsubokura explained where he was off to, along with other information most other shinigami would never as readily give to him. jugram instinctively placed a hand over his own chest at the opportunity that presented itself–and that would most definitely get his arrogant ass killed.
“personal lab? side project?”
jugram was sure his eyes were glittering like a child’s. the mention of the division captain’s main sent jugram’s stomach hurtling into the floor, but as the echo of his heart grew louder, he took in a short breath, then had a quick cursory glance around. then, he looked back into the little scientist’s ruddy face with a lovely, curious expression.
“tsubokura,” jugram called his name carefully, “would it… happen to be… anything you’d show anyone else?”
jugram knew the scientist had no reason to trust him—jugram was actively scraping the bottom of the barrel to make himself seem as docile as possible. and if he said no anyways, jugram wouldn’t hold it against him. the young man looked more like he’d spent eons being a frightened child than a seasoned warrior, and jugram only empathized.
but, damn it all, jugram was too weak and too curious.
“tsubokura,” he softly said again, “call me jugram.”
i’ll just look at him
endhell:
For a moment, he really had to wonder if he said anything wrong, but it made no sense, considering it was meant as a simple compliment, or more of an observation - even if that guy would not go to any competitions, his stature sure would help him to get quite far if he bothered.
“Oh, I thought more against those in your weight-class,” he explained, as he had not imagined him fighting against little kids, unless it was for training alone. It sure had been obvious though, Ginjo thought and let out a snort, who knows what was going through this one’s mind. His looks alone showed that he was not just any guy.
Another snort followed, as the other took his teasing a bit too serious. He honestly did not expect him to invite him now, or? It usually was the other way around, if lucky. A free meal was always welcomed; this one still looked rather doubtful though, even though it had been him, who started this whole conversation.
“If you are hungry, … maybe.”
Clearly not that willing, but also because he was not too sure yet, what he would win outta this. While he liked to always have some kind of company, this one looked a bit difficult to deal with.
garou definitely hadn’t picked up on the sarcasm about the dinner date. maybe because he was actually fucking starving…
or, maybe it was because he was ‘ utterly inept ’, per his mother’s typical assessment of his social skills.
garou slowly inhaled through his nose as his gnarled smile curled further into a corner of his lips. he places a hand on one of his hips and occupied the other scratching at one of his pecs. impromptu dates weren’t really garou’s style, but he was too excited to finally pick at a mind that didn’t belong to another one of his boring-ass coworkers ( over some dinner, no less! ). and the guy looked interesting too–he’d make garou look cool by proxy, a rare happenstance when garou had long since given up on trying to shake perpetually looking like a shitty supervillain, in his damn tai-chi trousers and turtleneck.
“okay,” garou reached out and gently gave the front of the other man’s chest a pat, then winked as he aimed a finger gun up at him while he was still in his space. he was sporting a wolfish grin,
“cool. i’m game.”
(( tehe i made a cute smiling garou icon with his earrings & scar..! ))
@kobashigawa-sonic liked for a starter
¥ That first shred of panic that overtook him when his screens notified Rin of the Quincy within the Seireiti was something he'd never experienced before. It wasn't just him that panicked. This had been worse than the Winter War. Something had even taken control of him and he stabbed one of his closest friends. Panic and guilt wracked him for years after. He had nightmares from the Blood War. He still had nightmares. Rin did everything he could in the following years to exhaust himself to the point of not sleeping, but even so, the glimpse of one of the surviving Quincy being escorted or moving about the Juunibantai scared him.
Every time he was walking past one of the Quincy he'd either freeze or dash away as quickly as possible. He knew that they wouldn't, couldn't hurt him now, but their presence sent him back to that panicked state. The small scientist shook whenever he had to enter his Captain's lab to bring something to him and one of the Quincy was on the metal table. He wasn't afraid of his captain as much as he was of the Quincy doing everything over again.
He was heading away from the communication lab and towards his own small one, thinking. He was either working in that lab or working on some new technology to better the Seireiti. Working kept his anxious mind busy. It was one of the few things he could do to at least stave off the panic attacks he'd been struggling with since the last war. Rin's anxiety had gotten much worse, making him wonder if he'd needed to get one of the other scientists to create something to help it. The thought drifted away as he walked straight into someone. Rin looked up and froze, those doe brown eyes of his wide with terror. He recognized this Quincy. The long blond hair, pale skin, and scars had him shaking. He was frozen as he looked up.
"I-I, I'm so s-sorry," he stuttered out, bowing deeply. His breathing wasn't steady and he could hear how loudly his heart was beating in his ears. This was the closest he'd gotten to one of the surviving Quincy and he feared the response to running into him.
most assuredly, since the day jugram slipped his small hand into the palm of the first quincy, jugram’d had nightmares too.
the only difference was, of course, that jugram had convinced himself the nightmares were only the aftershocks of power–his nightmares were the compulsory shrapnel of an explosion that would save mankind.
the images of bodies he oversaw the destruction of, before and after the invasion of the seireitei, would be just as much burned into what was left of his mind as they would what was left of his soul. ruddy compounded vignettes of gutted corpses, overlapping stereoscopic screams—breath that smelled acrid acquiescing against his trembling lips, ‘ don’t look away, haschwalth ’, all-seeing eyes keeping him held down in place.
he must breathe, and be joyous; let the night terrors rip through his supple, zealot skin. it was for something greater, after all. something much bigger than him. bigger than all the desolate shinigami, failures of quincy soldiers. their bones and flesh were never meant to outlive the truth.
and he saw them, splattered, every time he closed his eyes.
most assuredly, the little scientist was not alone.
yet, despite this, jugram had always been able to tell, when he got a glimpse at the boy’s darting eyes and pallid face in passing, he most certainly didn’t think this was the case.
additionally, the little scientist probably wasn’t looking for solace in the arbiter of his fear.
jugram would never fault him. in fact, he didn’t even allow himself disappointment at how diligently rin tsubokura would avoid him.
more than anything, jugram’s mind was a monster of his own making. the blood of rin’s comrades were on his hands, too, in the nightmares he’d have about what he’d done. it was finished, now, soak-stained into eternity’s canvas. it was over.
he’d somehow outlived the armageddon he caused—he had nothing more to lose. he was ready to die.
so, when a bundle of brown hair and tiny stature walked right into him just as jugram was exiting another laboratory, the quincy’s chest was instantly flooded with ( undeserved ) curiosity and ( highly undue ) warmth.
“oh–oh no, don’t bow to me, scientist,” jugram quickly said, near-white hair falling into his eyes as he reached forward for the boy’s arms, but then thought better of it, and instead gently took the boy’s chin with a finger, and pulled him back upright.
“none of the others bow to me. and don’t apologize, please. it’s quite unbecoming.”
jugram reached out again, attempting to move deftly yet with utmost delicacy to avoid starling the little scientist more than he already was, and went to straighten out the boy’s knocked-askew lab coat with gentle consideration. he pulled his hands back towards himself as soon as he could, and then curled some of his fallen locks back behind an ear to better look the shinigami in the eye.
“now, then. don’t let me get in your way. you must be off to do something important, scientist. you all usually are.”
sctelles:
He inclines his head just the slightest bit as his gaze never strays from the man in front of him, emerald eyes nigh PIERCING through him. The Quincy’s Reiryoku is weak, non-existent almost, and Ulquiorra cannot help but wonder why he’d approach him in the first place. He doesn’t voice his thoughts, though.
“You speak of running away from absolute nothingness while chasing it at the same time. Why? It hardly makes any sense. Why did you discard your belief in absolutes?” He well remembers his own ‘bliss’ when he sought out that vast space of nothingness in the deserts of Hueco Mundo. It’s one of merely two times where he’s felt at PEACE.
But even though he’s moved on from thinking that there’s only misery and despair to be found outside of nihility, along with the realization that there must be truth to the HEART came also the awareness of how his prior ignorance has been rather EASY. No curiosity, no questions, nothing. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that he UNDERSTANDS.
“ —– Yes.” He still very much believes that Hollows have a greater potential for strength than humans and Shinigami. But it has been incredibly plain to see that, in the end, a Hollow retains or even develops forms of human traits, some even amplified as demonstrated by the Espadas themselves. Destruction, gluttony, rage. In spite of it all, Ulquiorra supposes he can remove himself from the equation to a certain extend, at the very least. A creature like himself, formed from darkness and NOTHINGNESS could only learn so much in so little time; especially when he’s been robbed of any means of communications for the longest part of his existence. He’d still been stubborn, perhaps, although not enough to not be able acknowledge his own change when his demise closed in on him.
“My kind can be as greedy, power-hungry, selfish and foolish as humans can be. Although with great potential, I suppose my kind is not infallible. I bore witness to the vain struggles of my comrades in pursuit of power or acknowledgement.” Foolish. And, perhaps, painfully human.
“mm.”
in contrast, the hollow’s spiritual pressure was profound. of course, it fell behind that of the majority of the sternritter, a fact that had been precisely assured upon the foundation of the wandenreich’s special combat forces. but it quite plainly outmatched nearly every single shinigami’s that jugram had come in contact with since his revival in the seireitei.
jugram would’ve privately acquiesced, it took much mental fortitude on his part to not want to instinctively bask in it.
( finally, power he could nearly touch again, imagine feeling the cold air being crushed from his lungs as it blanketed him, and laid flat his skin and bones and soul, indiscriminately. is this the real reason why he invited ulquiorra in? not that he was partial to his endless eyes, but that he wished for the finality of being smothered by his strength? )
( this is why... this is why absolutes had no place in jugram’s world anymore. because he was so... weak to it—weak to wanting it so badly, and weak to just how swiftly it would kill him again. like… )
“it’s like a moth to a flame,” jugram quietly answered.
he had to break eye contact with the hollow so he could busy his fingers. he reached for the cup of tea on the chabudai he had prepared some hours ago, the tatami floor creaking with his shift in weight.
“i bring up humanity because i—there’s no profound reason for it, i suppose, my rejection of the ideal of absolutes. i am uncomplicated. like a moth, i had instinctive attraction to what i imagined was the source of all power: absolute control, and absolute nothingness. and like a moth, i didn’t know it was-... a falsehood. and… i would simply be incinerated if i touched it. absolutes possess no instinct, no discretion. they just... ‘ be ’. ”
jugram gripped the clay body of his tea cup.
“the pursuit of nothingness was a beautiful fire, to me. a vivant death. an oxymoron... i was trying to escape absolute nothingness by running towards it. because the moth—... the moth doesn’t know it’s a flame… it doesn’t know fire is indiscriminate. just like how fire cannot have any regard for the moth. i am unfit to want true nothingness, i am too complex to be so simple, too simple to be so complex... i am an idiot.”
jugram lifted the cup to his lips, hesitating, before taking a sip. then he set his cup aside again, and met ulquiorra’s gaze once more.
in a quick movement, jugram lifted his hand between himself and the hollow, and opened his palm. on his fingertips were callouses, and in the creases of his hand was residual sweat. he turned his hand over, and spread his fingers. long, but indelicate. his veins and tendons shifted under his pinkish pale skin.
“human.”
his hand promptly dropped back atop his lap.
jugram’s eyes flickered with curiosity at ulquiorra’s answer. a strange smile found its way onto his lips, and his under-eyes crinkled with mild mirth.
“i see…” from what jugram could remember, the arrancars did behave selfishly and foolishly, at least throughout the duration of the wandenreich’s stay in hueco mundo. though, jugram still didn’t quite understand them… so many struck him as just noisy and obtuse, and lacking critical thought. at the present, jugram felt the obligation to be more sympathetic, but he still found himself surprised to learn that arrancar could be more than... single-minded abominations.
“and you, then?”
ulquiorra, on the other hand, definitely seemed… different.
endhell:
Ginjo would follow the direction the other pointed it, yeah he may be spotting a building there, which could be said dojo. “Are they already on the same level as you?” he wondered and raised a single eyebrow, upon inspecting the other’s outer appearance once again. At that age, he had already trained as well, but not that much and even if, he somehow doubted that he could have managed that. “I bet you win every competition.” But do his pupils?
Meanwhile, he sure seemed fixated on his looks quite a bit. “What, ya’ wanna join?” Though, he would shake his head, without offering any explanation towards the stranger - this was his daily look, nothing unusual about it.
‘ i bet you win every competition. ’
the statement gave garou instant pause.
he stilled, his wandering eyes locking onto the other man’s—pinning immediately to his irises, deliberately sinking into them, like garou was attempting to quickly figure out his angle—now why would he say that? garou taught kids, garou always let them win.
he couldn’t know. there was no way this guy could know. if he’d been anywhere in garou’s vicinity before, garou would’ve remembered him.
so there was no way. he wouldn’t—couldn’t know about… garou’s history.
garou finally looked away, attempting to make the momentary hesitance look rather casual, like he totally saw the comment coming. besides, garou looked menacing enough. he had his big, steel earrings, bruised knuckles. canines that could barely fit in his mouth.
garou could admit, he looked scary, so the comment surely wasn’t that out of place.
“… if you’re implying i take martial arts classes on my own, i don’t.” not anymore. “and if you mean if i compete against the little shits, i don’t do that either. they’re tiny—little boogers, barely one -hundred twenty centimeters tall. that would be stupid. i don’t fight kids. just train ‘em.”
at the man’s sudden query about dinner, garou’s golden eyes flickered and he arched another brow.
“wha—?” actually, he couldn’t help but smile a bit in disbelief.
“what the hell are you talkin’ about, mister?” this guy must not have been meeting up with someone then. otherwise, why in the world would he ask a total stranger to join him for dinner? garou could never be too sure, though. but clearly, he’d made a good first impression?
“join you? like… you’re gonna pay for a meal for us or something?”
man, this guy was saying he wasn’t rich… but garou sure as hell wouldn’t pay for a stranger’s meal.
endhell:
God, he wished… though he was not that focused on money now, but quite a bit more sure would help him out with a lot of things, if he was honest.
“Uncle?” Looking rather irritated until he noticed that it was someone supposedly younger but his stature sure was something to behold. Perhaps he stared almost too long, but whatever that guy did, it sure worked. “Nah, then I wouldn’t be walking around but sit in an even flashier car,” he replied mildly amused. “Ya’ look like you come right outta a dojo.”
“’cuz i did. i teach the little brats at the place down the road.” he gestured behind himself with a bruised knuckles and a thumb.
garou looked him up and down once again, the little wrinkles on his nose now more instinct than anything else.
it took a lot of restraint to not just smell people sometimes. just, like, get close and snort–log it into the endless mental database. scents were like fingerprints, they made more of an impression than any amount of shiny gel this uncle put in his hair ever could (and it appeared to garou like he put in a lot of gel).
“so what’s the dressup for, then? got a dinner to go to?”
“fuckin’ thirty-seven fuckin’ degrees... my poor ice cream couldn’t stand a goddamn chance...”
(( unrelated to the blog entirely but some out random pieces of jjk fanart i did ))
@kobashigawa-sonic : what if i believe something different ? (( from jugram to ulquiorra)) —– from 𝑴𝑶𝑶𝑵 𝑲𝑵𝑰𝑮𝑯𝑻
The beliefs he holds are NOT ultimate — this, Ulquiorra has always believed. And yet, there’s only so little that he deems ‘ ENOUGH ’ to challenge his views ( …if I can’t see it, it does not exist… ). What worth does a belief hold if its fundamentals are all but shaky at best? Nonetheless, curiosity has long since awoken in him; a desire to understand. And even if he knows that the man before him is, at this point, no more human than he is, perhaps their exchange will offer some insights into their nature.
“ —– Then what exactly DO you believe, Quincy?”
jugram swallowed. his throat was a a bit tight.
he would be dead the next time he returned to the seireitei–met with a termination more horrific than the scythe of auswahlen, and his wards of the 11th and 12th division would have their own respective ways of making him rue the day he offered a hand to ulquiorra cifer. horrific in their own right, in jugram’s incredibly weakened state.
always despite himself, however, jugram would die a perpetual child, and resurrected, a child jugram remained.
these might be his last few hours taking his privilege of freedom for granted, but… jugram looked over the hollow’s face. it was desolate of the glow, of the purity of a soul–instinctively, his stomach churned.
and yet.
he just… looked so young. jugram saw in his large eyes, something that must’ve been left malleable, something that the hollow’s nature wouldn’t allow to grow over with a tight, disavowed veneer.
jugram was an idiot–but the child in his heart wept.
he appreciated that ulquiorrra had decided to stay.
“just that i don’t subscribe to that philosophy anymore. i—i can’t.” jugram pursed his lips into a tight line at his own stutter, but stilled himself with a small inhale.
“i don’t believe in absolutes. not anymore. absolute nothingness, absolute chaos. i only impose this belief upon myself, of course, you don’t need to offer me your trust.”
jugram’s gaze flickered across ulquiorra’s face once more.
“but i’ve—wasted... years... following–chasing–after absolute nothingness. ‘ bliss ’. while i, simultaneously, was hoping that it never got me. i was running away from it... i knew it was chasing me back.”
finally, jugram inhaled again, and made a conscious effort to smooth back over the dislodged expression forming in the valleys of his face into placid neutrality.
“i know that we couldn’t be more different, though, arrancar. there’s no reason i was born, i am fallible. therefore the man sitting before you is just a crude assemblage of memories and mistakes… tell me, cifer. can your kind ever be as foolish as humans can?”
@shizukesafukutaicho >> 【JUGRAM.】
✤ >> despite his height, jugram felt he always looked like barely more than a silver shadow in the bone-white gowns he was instructed to wear during his trips to back to the seireitei. he also stood out, more than he usually did, in his woven slippers and long hair pulled back tight enough the only ones of his many large blue scars that climbed past his collarbone were exposed to the air.
but this had been the case for a long time.
jugram was mostly occupied with how soon the last few hours of bodily tests would start again–not out of dread, rather anticipation. it was an experience like none other to watch scientists at work, and there was a small joy in watching this work being carried out so preciously on his own body.
(he didn’t dwell on the pain anymore–could anything be more painful than the mistake of still being alive when he thought he asked for death? ha. jugram... didn’t think so…)
for now, though, jugram leaned against one of the laboratory exterior walls that was closer to the front entrance of the research institute. he liked to watch the shinigami outside wander–liked looking at faces, new and old.
his eyes stopped darting when they landed on a familiar, warm brown pair of eyes–er, just one eye, rather, the man liked to keep the other hidden behind a portion his bangs–that he’d seen nearby more than a couple times before.
though, typically, jugram would’ve only looked his direction, then let his gaze go on its way veering towards another, this time, jugram immediately lifted a hand in a tepid wave, curious if the shinigami would engage (because most of the time, it really was a toss-up, but jugram wouldn’t be blaming any of them for it any time soon.).
with his other hand, jugram gestured to one of his own eyes, touching the skin underneath, a silent question to the shinigami about his mole. the little mole jugram had seen under it once; from the distance he was at now, he couldn’t quite make it out, but he knew it was there.
it was so striking it nearly looked fake; jugram wondered if there was at all a conversation to be had about it while he waited to head back inside.
the hand pointing to his eye dropped back down to his side, however the hand he raised palm-up at the young man was still suspended in the air in wordless, curious greeting.
hello, he mouthed.
the other man’s name was atau, he liked animals, and he seemed either hard of hearing or deaf, but that was all jugram could surmise up to this point, listening in to errant pieces of others’ conversation.
jugram wondered if he knew who he was, too.
(( garou’s human verse page is done!! woooooooo !!!! ))
(( …. me considering completely overhauling jugram’s about again because i feel like maybe urahara is more likely to want to preserve jugram’s life and freedom than the soul reaper military 😭 DAMN THIS PROCESS ))
