RIP Shareef Abdullah, once Defense Minister of the Black Panthers in L.A. A true friend to riot grrrls and peace punks in Los Angeles. My riot grrrl band Lucid Nation played shows he helped organize and our first CD got a great review from the Panther newspaper thanks to him. He helped us distribute our zine Eracism to prisons all over the western U.S. A great human being who devoted his life to helping people of all colors and walks of life. He was about to be interviewed for UCI’s upcoming documentary short Lost Grrrls: Riot Grrrl in Los Angeles, but he became ill and died before he could. He will be sorely missed.

EXCITING NEWS: In honor of Black History Month, we’ve been celebrating and highlighting some of the best black storytellers in film, TV and more. From Ava DuVernay to John Singleton, these brilliant storytellers are sharing important stories that matter and showcasing perspectives often overlooked by the media. Join us this Sunday (2/22) to celebrate the work of Filmmakers Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay and attend our CELEBRATION OF BLACK STORYTELLERS FILM SERIES outdoor film screenings of Coogler’s Fruitvale Station and DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere. Our event will take place at the historic Leimert Park in Los Angeles. In addition to screenings two films and a special Q&A, the CELEBRATION OF BLACK STORYTELLERS FILM SERIES offers moviegoers food, music and art from the community. Producers from Fruitvale Station will be in attendance for a special Q+A after the film.

FILM #1: RYAN COOGLER’S FRUITVALE STATION (2013) - Winner of 39 awards including both the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the US Dramatic Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, director Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station follows the true story of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a 22- year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother (Octavia Spencer), whose birthday falls on New Year’s Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz), who he hasn’t been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to Tatiana (Ariana Neal), their beautiful four year-old daughter. Crossing paths with friends, family, and strangers, Oscar starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realizes that change is not going to come easily. His resolve takes a tragic turn, however, when BART officers shoot him in cold blood at the Fruitvale subway stop on New Year’s Day. Oscar’s life and tragic death would shake the Bay Area – and the entire nation – to its very core.
FILM #2: AVA DUVERNAY’S MIDDLE OF NOWHERE (2012) - Winner of 12 awards including the Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Middle of Nowhere follows Ruby, a bright medical student who sets aside her dreams and suspends her career when her husband is incarcerated. As the committed couple stares into the hollow end of an eight-year prison sentence, Ruby must learn to live another life, one marked by shame and separation. But through a chance encounter and a stunning betrayal that shakes her to her core, this steadfast wife is soon propelled in new and often shocking directions of self-discovery - caught between two worlds and two men in the search for herself.

Events, protests, meetings, and convenings will be happening all weekend, with a #MoralMonday civil disobedience action on Monday. Hip Hop Caucus team members and supporters will be in Ferguson all weekend, but we know not everyone can make it.
So that everyone can get engaged with Ferguson October from anywhere, this Wednesday, October 8, we are holding a National Virtual Town Hall via phone. RSVP for the Town Hall and we will send you the call-in instructions. During the Town Hall, you’ll get updates from movement leaders about what is going on in Ferguson, as well as information about how you can support and amplify the message.
Thursday October 9th marks two months since Mike Brown’s death. We will not stop organizing until we get justice for Mike Brown.
