Kowloon Walled City, Hong Kong, c.1989

The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was built gradually—building on top of building—over time. Without a single architect, the ungoverned and most densely populated district became a haven for drugs, crime and prostitution until it was demolished in 1993. Photo documentation of the site exists but for the most part much of the inner-workings of the city remained a mystery.

Perhaps due to its proximity, Japan, in particular, developed a keen interest towards Kowloon. Its demolition in 1993 was broadcast on national television. But watching the footage, what most spectators didn’t realize was that up until the night before demolition a team of Japanese researchers were taking precise measurements and documenting the vacated city. Their findings were compiled into a book that, among other things, featured this panoramic cross section of the city depicting what life was like inside. You can read more about the book on Spoon & Tamago, and if you look hard enough, a few rare copies of it are available online.

This project is absolutely BIG and the person behind it BIGGER, and you guys have no idea how glad I am to have a complete Homestuck archive right at hand that also has stuff like The Baby Is You and Humanimals among so much more. Like what?? It’s the real MSPA.

okay so I know Homestuck is a meme and all, but like - it is absolutely no kidding one of the most influential works of the last fifteen years? Undertale is fucking massive for an indie game and got the kind of critical accolades that last and inspire all kinds of imitation, and it was started in Homestuck’s author’s garage - its most iconic song was also used in Homestuck for crying out loud. Two of the 2019/2020 Hugo and Nebula nominees for Best Novel, including the Hugo winner, are by former Homestuck fic authors who are open about the fact. I can recognize threads from Homestuck, and, more than that, from those authors’ specific interpretations of Homestuck, in both. Neither the Hugo nor the Nebula are small potatoes! Both those books are going to impact SFF in their own right; it’s gonna ripple out from there. I can name at least three other books published through major houses whose authors spent time in Homestuck fandom. This is just off the top of my head.

I am being one hundred percent sincere when I say that when if we lose Homestuck to the digital decay of Flash, we lose a modern landmark in SFF and experimental fiction. It’s worth grabbing a copy of your own, and this is a service to the world that’s been done here. I’m not joking.

lizard people is the most benign possible antisemitism but for some reason it hits me harder than overtly malicious antisemitism, i think bc it’s The Case Study of how easily an antisemitic trope can just become a normal part of everybodys vocab and after that ppl will fight you endlessly on whether or not its actually antisemitic

i think also, to people who are not familiar with antisemitism (through experience or study or both), antisemitism often comes across as cartoonish or wildly antiquated, so that people are inclined to dismiss it as toothless. i mean, lizard people is super fucking silly. or, people don’t really believe jews drink the blood of christian children anymore, that’s medieval. then its on jews to put in the legwork pointing out the use of lizard people to describe zuckerberg’s physical appearance, how qanon is modern blood libel, how easter pogroms can’t really be divorced from ‘the war on christmas’. and then, especially because conspiracy theory is now such a jokey quirky thing to so many people (”what’s your favorite conspiracy theory”) and not understood as an integral aspect of modern antisemitism, jews are suddenly The Fun Police, even tho all of these things share the same logic and imagery that drove an entire genocide not even a century ago
