the rinne festival glitters on the horizon, yet tenten finds her gaze fixated on neji ––– the stillness in the middle of storm. the crowd of people bathed in a mirage of lights swirl around him, but from the subdued look in his eye they might as well not be there. the urge to join the ongoing dance manifests in the shaking of her leg, chilled hands grip the edge of the seat underneath her. normally, she might just get up and go. call it teammate's intuition, but the crease in neji's brow is ... different than usual. it brews concern.
" just ... wanted to check if you were okay. you haven't said a word all night, and you've hardly touched your herring soba. what's going on? "

god, this guy was unbearable in the flesh. what was it about the uchihas that made them the most insufferable people on the planet? as soon as she thinks it, tenten feels a bit of remorse. if her entire clan got wiped out in front of her, she'd be insufferable too. there was no one for her to mourn, no family name to cling to. as far as anyone was concerned, tenten had entered this world alone.
that wasn't her choice. though she couldn't change the past, she knew she wouldn't allow her future to be like sasuke's – alone, running from the bonds that made him human, filled with hatred. ❛ what are you even trying to prove by running away? there are people in konoha that care about you, that love you, miraculously. why are you putting them through hell? what are you so afraid of? ❜

There was something about the way he felt a rush of adrenaline coursing through him after slashing that line through his hitai - ate, there was something freeing about it. Honestly, he was living up to the expectations of villagers that always assumed he'd just go bad one day for being the jinchuuriki of the kyuubi. Maybe they'd be happy thinking they were right after all these years and now their stares would never be on his back seeing as he was out of the village.
He felt free, he realizes it was kind of the same way he felt when he was out of the village on missions before, that feeling of nobody knowing what you are and you can do whatever you want. Betrayal shouldn't feel so free . . . Is it really betrayal if it feels like this? Or is it just giving yourself the freedom you've always wanted while being with one of your precious people? He liked to think it was more the latter but he wasn't stupid enough to disagree on it being betrayal at the root of it all.

naruto could cut a line through metal, but he couldn't sever the ties he had in konoha. that was his fatal flaw. that was what would hold him back when it came time to face those they used to call friends. though he'd cover it up with claims of whims, sasuke couldn't do it either. if he wasn't so weak, naruto would have been dead long ago. there were ample chances to get rid of him and yet here he stood. with him.
sasuke pinches the bridge of his nose. what had he gotten himself into? how long before their viewpoints clashed? before naruto was stopping him from doing something that needed to be done? before naruto did what he always did best and made him weak?
❛ and you really think you could face them in battle? kakashi? sakura? iruka? all the kids he's training to fight people like us? this isn't some childish game, naruto. this isn't about leaving the village behind to go frolick in the forest. a war is coming. people will die. do you really think you can handle their blood on your hands? especially since everyone already thinks you're a monster? you'd only be proving that they were right about you. right to ostracize you. is that really the legacy you want? ❜
something firelit boils within sasuke, infernal to the point of half speechlessness. “ what don’t you get, ” @konagakure asks, as if it were that simple. as if sasuke hadn’t witnessed home transfigure into an overnight graveyard, denied even the chance of growing pains. as if every waking day hadn’t taken on the shape of a shovel, and time, dirt, burying the memories of his kin to the point of skyscraping mounds. as if naruto, shrouded in earnest, picking up the same space he’d inhabited three years ago, wasn’t also a kind of haunt.
his brows deepen in utter frustration, the petal gates of his lips open. ❛❛ what don’t you get?! how could you ever call this place home?! ❜❜ and how could you possibly expect the same of me, bloodshed and all?
sasuke’s entire being turns into a question mark, endless and relentless under midday light.
there’s a stretch of silence wedged unproportionally against them. the first few drops of rain unceremoniously veils them in blue. sasuke sits in it, that blue pocket of quiet, allowing it to tame the wild bird that is his voice. but even still, he’s only all question. ❛❛ why do you go so far for me? ❜❜ and he believes he is solely arguing with the bleeding tone that carries his intonation. but if you were to fix it in another light, the wingtips of those words in just the right wake, it’d look something painfully close to pleading.

sasuke hadn't always been an inferno. though bred in the same village, the two of them might as well have existed in different worlds. yet, from the glimpses naruto caught of him, there was someone worth knowing. someone worth saving. someone worth fanning the flames for. no matter how hard sasuke tried to push him away, it didn't change the fact that they were threaded with the same fibers.
two young boys shrouded in loneliness and grief. misunderstood. tossed away by the village and expected to fend for themselves because of conflicts that existed long before they were born. sasuke couldn't help that he was an uchiha, just as naruto couldn't help that the nine-tailed fox had been sealed away in him. all these choices that people who were long gone made, and they were the ones taking the brunt of it all? how was that fair?
well naruto didn't care about the choices they couldn't help. what he cared about were the choices sasuke had made by himself. the choice to give him his food despite kakashi-sensei telling them they'd fail the test. the choice to jump in front of a hundred needles to save him. time and time again sasuke had showed his true heart, untainted by the grim uchiha legacy. that was the person worth saving. that was the person naruto would go far for. those were the flames worth fanning. even if he had to slice through layers and layers, naruto wouldn't let that person go.
still, there was much naruto had to learn. there were sensations in his heart that he didn't have a name for. all he knew, all konoha had taught them, was FIGHT. fight for what matters, what lights a fire underneath you, fight to protect those precious to you.
❛❛ because –– ❜❜ naruto clenches his fists together. ❛❛ because –– you're my friend sasuke! 'cause even when konoha turned its back on me and i felt like no one understood what it was like, i just knew you were out there too! i knew what it felt like to be all alone and i couldn't let you feel the same way! i won't let you! even if you can't believe in konoha, or kakashi-sensei, or any one else, YOU CAN BELIEVE IN ME. i've seen what's really inside you, sasuke. and i'm not gonna let anyone take that away from you! ❜❜

when will you grow wise? forget sasuke...
every inch he grew, he did only to be able to reach sasuke. every battle he fought, he did so as a stepping zone. if he could beat every bad guy no matter the jutsu, he could defeat sasuke's darkest demon, even if that demon was sasuke himself. besides, naruto knew all about demons, whatever sasuke had possessing him was nothing. if he could convince the evilest of guys to turn to turn over a new leaf, he could do it to sasuke too. whether he had to talk, punch, bite, kick, or scream, he had all the training he needed to bring sasuke home.
if that's what being wise means then i'll remain a fool my entire life.
everyone kept telling him that sasuke was long gone. that if he wanted to be hokage, he had to let go of the childish view he had of his former friend. ❝ weren't you listening to me?! what don't you get?! ❞ naruto clenches his fist, the words flying out and hopefully hitting sasuke in his thick skull. ❝ if growing up means giving up on you, if it means abandoning you, well then you can forget it! i'd rather be a stupid kid forever! ❞.

Who would be the best attorney?
something in my brain immediately said SAKURA SAKURA SAKURA but ALSO INO FOR SURE
ino would be a prosecutor (and she can cross examine like nobody's business) and sakura would be a defense attorney (she's gotta stand up for those who can't defend themselves) they'd always be on the same case together and they'd hold it over each others heads if they got a win or not.
i would also offer tenten as an attorney BUT i feel like tenten would climb to being a judge bc she has a strong sense of justice, and objectivity.
also just ino, ten and sakura all in a courtroom together. sakura and ino constantly objecting each other, the dramatics of the court getting out of hand cause they start taking jabs at each other. ten having to bring order to the court and play mediator. them having to recess. them almost getting taken off the case cause they're so volatile but they're so determined to beat the other that they pull it together

oh what a cinch it was to maintain his gaze upon her due to the fact that she was simply nice to look at, easy on the eyes and he felt he must observe what would become of her facial expression as a result of the claim he made in order to determine whether it was appropriate. indeed, tirelessly he has read various books that pertain to emotions and how they manifest through one's face, body and tone since developing an interest in connections. as for the type of connection he was pursuing with ino specifically, he made it a mission of his to find sources of information, be it a book, novel or person, for romance and flirtation and how to put such ideas into practice in preparation for their dates. perhaps anyone else would have been most concerned with their appearance and what they would wear, and while sai did learn that dressing up presentably would impress his date and acted accordingly by having sought help from sakura to form his outfits, how he was going to express himself through words was his foremost concern hence the many hours that he invested in studying prior. he's made tremendous leaps in that area, or so others have told him, but he still believed he had a long way to go before he gets to where he wants to be.
she was blushing, a reaction that indicated modesty, embarrassment, shyness, shame...it caused him to worry, as well as her reply. his eyes widened. was it a good thing that that was the first time she's ever been on the receiving end of such a remark on a date because he was making himself stand out, separating himself from her previous dates by showing her something different and unprecedented? or was he just coming on too strong, overwhelming her? he couldn't settle on an answer himself, and didn't want there to be a long, awkward moment of silence from trying to figure it out, so he went ahead and asked her outright so he'd then have an idea of how to proceed, “ do you...like it? ”
sure, his words may be derivative in most instances — as in, he has a tendency to repeat what he's read or heard — but even so, he wouldn't say certain phrases if he didn't want to. he was still trying to figure out how to consistently put words together in a way that was unique to him and that would fluently convey his thoughts and feelings and emotions without any help or guidance or reference. sometimes he'd be able to, sometimes not, and when he can't, he searches for the closest thing in his memory of what he's read or heard that might get the job done instead, even if it's not entirely accurate. i think i was made for you sounds like something that should be said to a longtime partner rather than a crush that he's on a second date with — still, what he meant to say was that he felt this was the start of something special between them because he likes her. a lot. @konagakure, continued.
hundreds of eyes had been on her before, but none of them had the same effect that sai’s did. he doesn’t just look at her, he peers into her ––– something ino thought only she was capable of doing. time and time again, she had slipped effortlessly into the minds and bodies of others, extracting what information she needed to succeed in battle. but this was no battle, just a boy, a girl, a heartfelt confession, and a plate of steaming barbecue pork. ino could not decide which one was scarier.
ino had come to find that sai said what he observed, and for that, she found herself often posing. not in the sense that she was ever inauthentic, only that … she would only give the best sides of her. before their dates, every hair would be tucked into place, an even shine of gloss would be applied on her lips, her outfit would be freshly pressed. sai never … at least not in her interpretation of events, minded if she was post-mission or pre-date, he enjoyed her company all the same. knowing this, she could breathe a bit easier. it was no longer about putting on a show to impress a boy, but rather being authentic to get to know one.
“ i … ” ino blinks. did she like it? well, she certainly didn’t hate it. what girl didn’t want someone who was meant for them? that was theirs and only theirs? that made them feel not just special, but seen? “ i do but … ” ino leans forward, as if a closer look would help her decipher what was going on in his head. she folds her hands and places them under her chin, eyes flickering over his features. “ only if you really mean it. you can’t just say something like that to someone and then … ” walk out on them. “ do you mean it, sai? ”
