I went on X after a long time (i dont visited it before that name change) to see what Star Trek/Spirk content had to offer . . .
I shouldn't have done it.
Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I feel like tumblr is spoiling me in terms of interacting with decent people, and in doing so, I've gotten out of the habit of how intolerant people are.
I'm not saying that Tumblr doesn't have its problems, and I won't deny that I'm very good at ignoring the parts of the fandoms that I don't like (that little thing called scrolling or filtering tags that a lot of people seem woefully incapable of doing is a great) but X has become the fucking Wild West, the fandoms that operate there have never been peaceful but it's becoming even more ridiculous.
All this preamble to say that a mess is going on regarding some of the writing choices in the original series regarding Captain Kirk's romantic relationships, in particular, the one with Hura.
What romantic relationship do you think? Me too, my friends, because from what I know, even though I haven't gotten to that point yet (life keeps me very busy), there was only one kiss between them, and it was under the influence of some plot device. Of course, I take into account that, being the 1960s, racism was rampant, and several laws were bent just for that kiss. And although I can't find the article, the actors, along with Old Uncle Gene, had tried to insinuate that there was something truly concrete between them, if not even turning it into an OT3 with Spock in the mix. Before you ask, I'm as pale as a sheet, so I obviously can't grasp some things, so if I say something stupid, please correct me with grace.
It seems to be a widespread opinion that Spirk was popularized by fans who forcefully interpreted it as an allegory for being in the closet, ignoring the relationship with Hura because she is a black woman. . .
From here it only goes from bad to worse, attacking the entire segment of the fandom that ships Spirk as if we were all a bunch of racist, denialist, and misogynistic. Mind you, I'm not saying there aren't any, and that women are very often demonized in ml/ml content, because God knows what many are saying about Spok's recent love interests in SNW is toxic as hell, as well as disrespectful. I personally haven't watched it yet, but damn, they both had lives before they met!
But back to us, um... hello? The 60s obviously would never have allowed a relationship like that, but from here to saying that Spirk fans imagined Kirk's fucking heart-shaped eyes to Spock and vice versa (If all those attitudes weren't in the script, both actors have a lot of explaining to do) and everything in between is a pretty heavy denial of reality.
And you, reasonable reader, will be thinking why I am so shocked and acting like an old woman clutching at her pearls.
The point is, I feel like I'm watching one of those scenes where bullies gang up on someone in the park, all wrapped up in thread after thread of frankly idiotic people who clearly have never watched a single episode or people who have a different reading of the series but who can't talk about it without calling someone racist and asserting their opinion as law.
Again, I'm not saying there aren't a fair amount of racists in every fandom, because sadly there are, but the inability to talk about it calmly and respectfully on both sides is shocking to me.
