One of my favourite bits of media history trivia is that back in the Elizabethan period, people used to publish unauthorised copies of plays by sending someone who was good with shorthand to discretely write down all of the play's dialogue while they watched it, then reconstructing the play by combining those notes with audience interviews to recover the stage directions; in some cases, these unauthorised copies are the only record of a given play that survives to the present day. It's one of my favourites for two reasons:

It demonstrates that piracy has always lay at the heart of media preservation; and

Imagine being the 1603 equivalent of the guy with the cell phone camera in the movie theatre, furtively scribbling down notes in a little book and hoping Shakespeare himself doesn't catch you.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

Shixiong!Shen Yuan thinking to himself after bonding with Luo Binghe: it's a shame I don't have any female relatives in this life who could marry him. Maybe I'll have a daughter one day, and she can marry Binghe, and then our bloodlines will be intertwined? Oh but any desirable woman who could be my wife would also want to marry Binghe, so I guess I'll have to stay single forever. I guess I could adopt a daughter? I don't really know if a good opportunity for that will come up... I know! I'll use that one Magical Plot Device Item to make a female clone of myself, raise her as my daughter, and then one day when she's all grown up she can marry Binghe and then Binghe and I will be in-laws and officially family! Although now that I'm thinking about it, I'm a modern man and I guess it is kind of problematic to raise a kid entirely so she can marry a particular man one day. I mean it's Binghe so it's not as weird or creepy as it would be otherwise, because naturally everyone wants to be Binghe's wife, I wouldn't even need to suggest it to her it would just inevitably happen. Still, though. Probably not the best thing to plan out... I guess we'll just have to settle for being sworn brothers? Kind of a letdown.

their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.

kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.

their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.

big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!

(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)

we really can’t overstate how damaging it has been to indoctrinate the public with the idea that if they let themselves eat as much as they want, they’ll eat too much. human bodies, when permitted over the long term to eat as much as they want, actually get really, really good at calibrating their hunger and satiety, and will over time eat exactly the right amount for themselves. the common conception of a balanced eater as a minimal or restrained eater is absolutely wrong. balanced eaters eat quite a lot (compared to diet cultural ideas about right intake amounts), and they do so consistently and permanently. healthy, balanced eating isn’t some tightrope walk, it’s a gigantic net of total permission to eat.
