Three Bears Song (곰 세 마리)
Since I am still a beginner at Korean, I feel the best way to get the basics of the language down is to go back to the basics - children's material for learning languages. One way children pick up languages is through children's songs. A popular song is 곰 세 마리 (Three Bears). I will post the lyrics and attempt to translate and pick words apart.
곰 세 마리 가 (gom se mari ga) 한 집에 있어 (han jibe isseo) 아빠 곰, 엄마 곰, 애기 곰 (appa gom, umma gom, aegi gom)
아빠 곰은 뚱뚱해 (appa gomeun ddoongddoonghae) 엄마 곰은 날씬해 (umma gomeun nalsshinhae) 애기 곰은 너무 귀여워 (aegi gomeun neomu gwiyeowo) 으쓱 으쓱 잘 한다 (eusseuk eusseuk jal handa)
곰 (gom) = bear(s) 세 (se) = three 마리 (mari) is a counter used for animals. It has no meaning on its on in this form, but it must be used behind the number only when saying how many animals there are. 한 (han) = one 집 (jeep) = house 아빠 (appa) = dad/papa 엄마 (umma) = mom/mama 애기 (aegi) = baby 뚱뚱해 (ddoongddoonghae) = fat/overweight 날씬해 (nalsshinhae) = thin/slender 너무 (neomu) = so/too 귀여워 (gwiyeowo) = cute The last line I have trouble understanding. As far as I can tell, based on the dance that accompanies this song and internet translation programs, 으쓱 (eusseuk) means "shrug". And 잘 한다 (jal handa) I understand means "doing good/well". I'm not sure how 으쓱 으쓱 (shrug) works in this line. But for the other lines:
Three bears live in one house Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear
Papa Bear is fat Mama Bear is thin Baby Bear is too cute *shrug* *shrug* They do well (?)
