After a few minutes of brushing both hands, brushing of the real hand is stopped. People continue to feel their hand being brushed, because they see it happening to the fake hand. This trick has been used to help amputees who experience discomfort from limbs they no longer have. In one example, an amputee felt like his missing hand was contracted into a fist, so the rubber hand illusion was used to show him the hand relaxing. [video]
