T/N: This short story takes place during Obon, a Japanese Buddhist holiday. To understand the story better, I’ll have to add a short explanation to Obon:
People believe that their ancestors’ spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during Obon and pray for the spirits. In most regions, Obon is celebrated around August 15, and it typically begins 13th and ends 16th of August. On the first day of Obon, lanterns are lit inside houses, and people go to their family’s grave to call their ancestors’ spirits back home. On the last day, people bring the ancestor’s spirits back to the grave. [source]
Two obon traditions are mentioned in the story, mukaebi and shôryôuma, but they are explained in the story itself so I won’t elaborate on them.

Ayumi stabbed the wooden chopsticks into the cucumber.
Kamamoto’s childhood friend Ayumi, ever since their summer holidays in high school, came over to the Kamamoto household, what seemed to be every day, to hang out. Naturally this meant seeing Anna, the Kamamoto household’s guest, so frequently that they’ve become like sisters.
“So this is called a (?) horse”
Ayumi took the (?) wooden chopsticks and (inserted them into four pieces of cucumber), creating something that resembled a horse, and placed it in front of Anna.
“Spirits of those who have died, ride these horses to come visit during Obon*”
Seeing the long and thin, (?) cucumber horses, Anna began to imagine.
It was a scene of Suoh and Totsuka riding on the cucumber horses, (?) descending from the sky. Suoh (without using his hands) got off the cucumber horse’s back. ‘Ah the sensation of riding a cucumber horse isn’t that great is it’ said Totsuka in a carefree tone. The cucumber horse that the two rode here (did something?) and lowered itself down facing Anna...
A small, unintentional smile slipped out. Still being able to smile, Anna was a bit (?); a bit relieved.
“Oba-sama**, is it okay if I (put) this at the altar?”
“Ah, thank you Ayumi-chan. Please do.”
“Okay! Also, tonight, will we light a Mukaebi***?”
‘Mukaebi’, Anna repeated in a whisper.
Ayumi, hearing Anna's voice, looked back.
“A Mukaebi fire is burned and used as a signal for the spirits to return”, explained Ayumi as she (straightened up a pin).
Anna (blinked a few times) and ran, with small steps, in the direction of the shopfront.
Kamamoto’s home is a liquor store. Upon leaving the residential area and (something about the shop), she found Kamamoto holding a beer case.
“Rikio”
“Hey. What’s up Anna?”
“Mukaebi, I want, to light a fire”.
With just that, (Kamamoto understood) what Anna was asking .
(Not sure how the -darou at the end of the sentence changes the meaning). (?) a serious (?).
As the sun set, (the time drew nearer). They closed the shop and started the Mukaebi in Kamamoto Liquor Shop’s (?).
(Since Kamamoto told his parents and Ayumi that’ll he’ll start the fire, Kamamoto and Anna crouched down next to the pile of small branches).
Anna concentrated on the ‘Red’ within her. That which was within her body, even now still (?), Suoh Mikoto’s ’Red’.
Anna carefully drew out the now unstable, wavering ‘Red’. In her palms, Anna brought to life a tiny flame.
(As if carrying water in her hands), Anna let the flame fall on to the branches.
It spread across the branches and the red fire (somthinged?).
“Are you okay?”
Kamamoto looked at her, with a worried expression. She knew that there were many different meanings behind the question ‘Are you okay’.
“I’m fine.”
She was fine. And so, Kamamoto (?). Kusanagi went a long distance for Anna’s sake. Yata and everyone else, did not intend to break their bonds.
Anna stared at the red flame..
“I wonder, if Mikoto and Tatara will come back.”
At that moment, the two of the smelt the scent of cigarettes.
Surprised, Anna sprung up and looked around her.
“Hey, what’s up Anna-chan?”
(There stood the source of cigarettes, Kamamoto’s father.)
(He looked at Anna who had suddenly stood up with wide eyes.)
Anna slowly let her body relax, and (lowered her eyebrows).
“... it’s, nothing.”
August 13. If Suoh Mikoto were still alive, today he would have turned 25.
