@kovacs-on-comics
one of the worst parts of being a duke fan, I feel, is duke being created in the 2010s rather than the 90s or late 2000s when the bats were doing their peak toxic found family-isms so now when duke gets his rare interactions w the rest of the batfam it's all therapyspeak and healthy and shit bcs he missed out on all the toxic codependency and resentment 😓
NEVERMIND POST CANCELED everyone get more duke & dick beef/it's complicated brotherism coded NEOWWWW
Part of why the Dark Phoenix saga is a tragedy is because the x-men chose to fight for Jean, but it didn’t matter because In her nature, Jean chooses sacrifice. After “Jean” kills 5 billion people the X Men fight her in an intense battle and are finally able to subdue the Phoenix, But they along with Jean are immediately summoned by the Shi'ar empire and where she has to answer for her crimes. Due to his time among the Shi'ar empire, Xavier is able to set up a trial by combat. The X Men vs Shi'ar's Imperial Guards. If the X Men win, Jean goes home.
What I like about this issue is the conflict among the X Men. It shows each one in deep thought over what to do. While they all love Jean, they also recognize what she did was horrific and some truly debate among themselves if they should fight for her. But ultimately they all unanimously decide to fight. They know Jean should face some type of justice but they also know she was being influenced by something beyond her control. They ultimately decide she's their family, and they are willing to die and kill to protect her.
But at the end Jean is someone defined by her love and compassion and she couldn't live with what she'd done. The guilt was too much. She knew from the beginning that she wasn't going to leave that trial alive and chose to die for her crimes.
This page perfectly sums it up. If Jean had lived she would have to stay in control for the rest of her inmortal life, and maybe she could do it! But one slip up an everything is done. So Jean prefers this way, because she can not live with the idea of another person dying by her hands, Because nothing mattered more to her than conserving her humanity.

Honestly if I could change one thing about Batman as a character I would make him a millionaire Instead of a billionaire.
Specifically I would make him a millionaire from a family that used to bigger but over the years the wealth has dwindled and now the Wayne’s still have money but most of his notoriety comes from prestige and reputation rather then actual on paper cash.
It can allow Bruce to still put his money into social programs and fund the basics of Batman WITHOUT having the giant Lex Luther shaped issues regarding the sheer AMOUNT of money he’s NOT USING to help people. And would make his need to use Batman to help where his money fails make sense. It would also make the fact that Bruce is seemingly unable to change anything with said wealth make sense, he’s just one millionaire of many, a millionaire with a larger reputation then most but he doesn’t have an infinite money glitch and he can untimely do only so much as a mere socialite.
Obviously it would still be a DEEPLY LIBERAL story and in real life someone deciding that money isnt enough to solve crime so putting on spandex and doing extra judicial justice must be the way to go would be INSANE but in the exaggerated world of super hero comics it works!
It would also solve the secondary Batman problem I call “The dumb Infinite toys” issue, where Bruce (a noir detective hero) keeps on being given ridiculous toys for temporary arcs that makes you ask the question “why doesnt he use this tech all the time? Well the answer is he cant. Sorry Bruce, gonna have to stick to the Car the Plane and the utility belt. If Damion gets kidnapped by Darkside or whatever Clark will have to handle it. No high tech mech suits for you ❤️
