Word Count: 1.2 K
You laid in bed, staring straight ahead at the ceiling as you tried with everything in you to gather your thoughts. It had been a very long week and it was catching up to you. Between your job, school, friends and family; you werenât sure what to do first. You raked a hand through your hair, tugging at the roots not so gently. It was frustrating; not being able to verbally express what you needed. Your mind raced along side your heart as you stumbled over words that hadnât passed your lips.
The bedroom door silently opened, some light from the hallway spilling in. You didnât bother to look, knowing it was your boyfriend, Johnny. âBabe? Is everything okay?â He asked softly, very well knowing the answer but wanting to see if you would respond. After a few minutes of no response, he backed out of the room; disappearing to somewhere you werenât sure of. Rolling onto your side, you continued to fight the chaos running through your head.
What you didnât notice, while you were trying to find a way out of your mind, was Johnny had returned from his adventures. Suddenly, you were scooped up into his arms and being carried out of the bedroom, down the hall and out the front door. At this point, you didnât even have the energy to try to fight whatever Johnny was up to, so you stayed quiet in his arms. Johnny sat you in the front seat of the car, draped a blanket around your body and then buckled the seat belt. After getting in and buckling himself up, he drove off into the night, still not saying anything. Once a few moments had passed, you slowly turn your head to look at your boyfriend. He was ethereal in the moonlight; eyes sparkling as it hit just right.
Neither one of you said anything as he drove but he did place his hand on your thigh, rubbing soothing circles. Glancing back out the window, the surroundings were becoming less and less city. All you knew was Johnny was on a mission and once he had an idea: there was no stopping him. There was a soft lull of an indistinguishable song on the radio and you could feel your heart rate slowing down to a normal speed. Something about the quietness was easing your mind in ways you werenât able to by yourself.Â
Slowly, the car came to a stop and you looked around to see where your boyfriend had taken you and thatâs when it hit you: you knew this location. It was the ocean; where Johnny and you had first confessed your feelings for each other. Looking over to the driver side, it was noted Johnny had gotten out. He had gotten stealthy these days and before you could look around, your door was opening. Johnny swiftly pulled you into his arms, along with the blanket and walked to the front of the car, where he had already placed another blanket on the hood. Setting you down gently, he climbed onto the hood next to you and took your hand.Â
âWhat is going through your mind, (Y/N). And donât tell me itâs nothing because something is going on.â Johnny spoke with clear a voice, no sense of joking to be detected. You could tell he was worried and that spiked your heart rate a little as that was the last thing you wanted to do. Running your free hand through your hair, you stared straight at the incoming tide as you began to talk.Â
âItâs just... I feel like Iâm failing. I canât seem to keep a balance between work and school and my social life and my family time. It feels like every time I think I have a grip on it, a small string snaps causing it to crumble. Iâm scared I canât do this anymore.â You took a shaky, deep breath before you carried on. âWork is just a constant anxiety attack and itâs making me hate my career path. Why am I getting a Masters in this field if I canât handle what Iâm doing as a graduate assistant?â As you spoke, your eyes never left the tide but you could feel the tears falling down your cheeks. Johnny stayed silent as you continued.Â
âItâs like living in a black hole. I canât seem to climb out of it no matter how many times I try; and I canât ask for help because whenever I try to vocalize how Iâm feeling, it just sounds like whining and complaining.â You stayed silent after finishing your last thought; not realizing how much weight just lifted off of your shoulders.Â
It was still for a minute before you felt Johnnyâs hand upon your cheek, wiping away the trail of tears that continued to fall. He hummed softly before saying âI hope you know how proud I am of you, baby. Not just for the work you are doing while in school but also because of how you just let all of that flow of your chest. I know it wasnât easy but I want to be here to help.â
He gently took your chin in his hand before turning your face to meet his. Looking into his eyes, you could see the amount of love and care he held for you.Â
âI love you so much (Y/N)(Y/M/N). I am so damn proud to see you pursuing your dreams. I know it seems so difficult now but think about it: in a year, you will be done with school and have that paper that states you know what you are talking about. Right now is only a small sliver of your future and you have so much time to change it. If it helps, you can always look at different avenues in this career because I know the current one isnât your only option! I will help you in anyway possible to figure this out. As for your family and friends, they all understand how busy you are. Summer is almost here and you get a break than. We can plan a trip to spend time with everyone. Maybe also a side trip for just us.â He finishes with a wink and you laugh softly.
He took a second to catch his breath before continuing, âI believe in you so much and I know you will make it through this because I am here to help you. We got this.â He placed a soft kiss on your forehead before exaggerating âYOU got this.âÂ
You continued to stare into his eyes for half a second more, not understanding how you never noticed the gleam of pride held in his facial expression. You smiled softly before leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his lips, whispering a soft âthank youâ before burying your face into his neck and holding on to his frame tightly. You knew he was right and everything would work out in the end. For now, you had an amazing support system and knew you could handle anything with Johnny by your side. He wrapped his arms around fully your body and held you close as the sound of the tidal waves meeting the shore lulled you into a peaceful sleep that you so desperately needed.Â
