Did a lil project this evening after accumulating some supplies… I can cut mats now! Given that I’ve got a stack of artwork in unusual and nonstandard sizes that I want in store-bought frames, I figured it was worth like a $120 kit and some YouTube videos to figure out how to mat things myself.

The first cut was disastrous: I was dragging the bevel-cutting blade in the wrong direction (can’t cut with the non-sharp side of the blade, duh), but once I expanded my mat window and redid the cut, you can’t tell the difference.

I’m definitely better-armed for my next foray into matting, which is good because I have so much stuff to get into frames. Here’s my handiwork!

After taking a brief break from Sekiro (I unrelatedly threw out my back this weekend and didn’t need the extra tension), I finally fired up and beat Jedi: Fallen Order. A fantastic game with a wonderful combat system and thoughtful level design… not to mention with Metroidvania-style backtracking!

Anyway, I’m both excited for Jedi: Survivor next spring, and stoked to get back into Sekiro.

After 34 hours and 122 levels earned, I have finished Dark Souls III. Between the combat and progression, it felt like the best Dark Souls to play — but so far, I think Elden Ring and Bloodborne are my favorites. Now onto the Demon's Souls remake!

The Dancer of the Boreal Valley was maybe one of the best boss fights in all of the Souls games. It’s so beautifully designed and all of the animations were incredible and fluid. If it wasn’t trying to murder me I would watch it for hours on end.

not neceesarily. i saw a secret showing of it just a few years ago... it took place in a lower east side apartment occupied by a projectionist at the Film Forum, and i only found out about it by replying to a craigslist ad for a bunch of old kitchenaid mixers that were being sold for parts. turns out, it was actually advertising the times for an underground film festival. steganography. i was the only one there who wasn't already in on it, but they were more than happy to have me once they worked out that i wasn't going to narc on them to the MPAA. jules, if you're still out there: sorry about walking off with yr lighter. i hope things worked out with that librarian.

meanwhile, i saw it at a secret showing in the bay area, back in '17. i got the invite through a friend of a friend's ex, who knew someone that setup a projector at the back of the bart maintenance yard in hayward, and we pretty much camped out in one of the line service cars, smoking a bit, making out with this chill irish actress named katie and just generally vibing.

film was good, but it's definitely one of those experiences you have to live through, because it's hard to describe otherwise. katie and i kept in touch a bit afterward, but she got busy with an acting gig up in canada and i started paying more attention to my career. btw, katie, sorry about accidentally stealing your iphone charger.

Goncharov’s been on my to-see list for years but I’ve given up hope of ever getting my hands on a copy. Love to see the resurgence about this movie though… hopefully someday it’ll get the release it deserves.
