Final Monograph

A short book showing the story of a woman and her collection of saris.
My final Monograph.
adding links into ISSUU
As a final touch, I added links to the contents page. This would make it easier to direct from the content to a specific page if the audience wanted that.
uploading the monograph to ISSUU.
As my Monograph is complete, it is time for me to upload it to ISSUU. It was easy to upload it, the next thing I had to think about is how it looks on ISSUU. After flicking through the pages, I have found no faults from the InDesign version to the ISSUU version. This means that I have converted it with its proper settings and high resolutions. The images are not pixelated and they have kept to its own true colour.
little touches - part three
Breaking the grid. I chose to break the grid for the contents and open page. The reason being is because not everything looks the best in the grid. At the end it is also about how everything looks visually. If I had used the grid, the numbers on the contents seemed very left-handed, which made it look lopsided.
little touches - part two
Having one word on the next line is what breaks the overall look. When the audience is reading the paragraph is breaks the concentration. By altering the paragraph I have managed to increase the text box to allow space for the ‘widows’.
little touches - part one.
I went over my final monograph to check for mistakes and little things that can be fixed and adjusted.
Since my Monograph is digital, this means that all the images will be bright and vibrant. But looking back at the titles included on the pages, I found that they were slightly dull in colour. I had colour picked the saris so that it would match the title. But again it seemed quite dull. So I changed the colour slightly to a brighter shade. Even though this was a small change it really did brighten up the images above the title.
Final front cover.
I’ve slightly changed the front cover. I have increased the ‘kerning’ to equally space out the title, this gives it an even look. I have also made the title the exact width of the image to keep everything within the grid and also to make it look aesthetically pleasing.
front cover options
I came up with two different front covers.
The first is full bleed photograph of my mother’s saris. The reason why I liked this so much is because of the mystery is gives. This is due to the out of focus photograph. Having the words ‘her saris.’ gives off quite a harsh tone even though you would not expect that being in lowercase. This might not be the best choice as it could give off the wrong impression to the audience.
The second front cover includes an image of my mother wearing one of the saris. I got the inspiration from a magazine called Kinfolk. Kinfolk uses negative space to highlight the image used on the cover. I decided to change the cover for my version by having the title at the bottom and in capitals. By having it in capital it directs the audience to both the imagery and title at the same time. Also by having the image in a white border almost gives the front cover a polaroid look as the border is bottom heavy.
working with the content.
Once I had the content sorted, it was time to organise everything on the page. My task now is to figure out what would suit the monograph and narrative better.
Would I keep the writing as left alignment or centred?
Both give a different look. But I have noticed that with centred alignment, the less information the better it looks. So using the left alignment would be the best choice. It will also mean that it would be easier to read for the audience.
not using faces.
During this project, I have obviously noticed how personal the Monograph could come across. Especially since I am focusing this on my mother. So to pull back from this and add a sense of privacy and mystery, I want to cut the eyes or even face out of the photographs.
giving photographs that old look.
To keep the theme and narrative of the monograph flowing, I decided to edit the photographs to give it that “old look”. It ties the content together giving it the relationship between the polaroids and the image above.
editting photographs further.
It is all about the little things that make the final product better. As you can see the image above includes some background objects. By removing it cleans up the image and allows the full focus and attention to be on the sari.
selecting and editting.
As my narrative has been defined, I can now take appropriate photographs that will work alongside my narrative. I have decided to take photographs of my mother from a lower angle. By using this lower angle it almost imitates a child-like view.
Once I have chosen the image that I want, I will now edit the image to its best quality. I have taken the image in a ‘RAW’ format. By doing so, it will be easy to manipulate the photograph. I wanted the colours in saris to be bright, in order to do this, I would have to tweak the exposure and saturation without making the sari look fluorescent.
polaroid inspiration.
Staying on the polaroid theme, I’ve decided to use this technique to enhance the look of the photographs being taken in the past.
As the images I have collection are not polaroids, this meant that I would have to photoshop them. I had to find a high-quality polaroid frame and edit the photograph to it.
I added shading to create the look of the polaroid being placed onto the page rather than it looking flat.
Here’s the final edit. The polaroid frame also has a slight texture to it which gives it an almost authentic look.
Changing Narrative.
After talking to my peers and tutors, I have finally finalised my narrative. My narrative is about how I view my mother.
How she is a role model in my life. Ever since I was a child she has always been someone I could depend on if I was in trouble or just needed some attention.
This narrative suits the collection better than what I originally thought, which was to do with the cost of each sari. By using this narrative it gives a more personal touch and allows the audience to connect with the Monograph.
managing my time wisely before the deadline.
