I ascribed to the notion that to be able to express yourself in an artistic form in life you had to live in perpetual pain. And it’s nonsense. It’s really nonsense. There’s enough pain in the world that if you’ve any sensitivity to you, you can kind of with some way—some form of empathy—you can feel or you can experience. That you can’t adopt of course the exact experience someone lives, as your own, of course not. But there’s enough pain the world that you don’t have to live it to represent it in some artistic way. Whether painting or singing or writing a lyric.
