Denying trans kids puberty blockers is unethical, full stop. Puberty blockers are amazing, 100% reversible tools to give transgender teens extra time to make the critical, PERSONAL decision whether or not to medically transition. Being trans is not a phase, and itâs not a mental illness. Itâs 2017 and trans people exist, whether you like it or not, and medical science has finally advanced to the point where people with physical dysphoria can be happy and comfortable with themselves.Â
I absolutely believe, under medical supervision, if they so choose, that trans teens should be able to start HRT at the same time their cis peers start puberty. Everyone, EVERYONE deserves to have autonomy over their own body. People are always quick to chime in with âitâs too early to make a decision like that! what if they regret it!â as if a questioning cis teen medically transitioning, realizing this isnât their path, and de-transitioning is the WORST thing imaginable. Youâre really going to make a far higher percentage of trans teens suffer through the wrong puberty because you only care about an incredibly small percentage of cis people making a conscious decision to go through the same thing almost every trans person has been FORCED to go through?
Less than 4% of people who medically transition regret their decision. Trans people who are denied medical transition have an attempted suicide rate of 60%. Transgender kids allowed to transition have the same rates of anxiety and depression as their cisgender peers.Â
Take it from a trans person, going through the wrong puberty was traumatizing and left me with mental and physical scars that i will never be able to get rid of. The next generation of trans kids should not have to suffer like I did.
