Obsidian ain’t nothin’ to fuck with.
maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s brujeria
Magic essentials!
This was part of a series of illustrations I did for an annual group show with two friends at work (but still haven’t gotten around to sharing, oops. More on that later.)
Mood.
A couple weekends ago our coven celebrated Sheridan.Wildwoman’s birthday.
It was the big 3-0 and she wasn’t scared or worried about it at all. She has found love, found a passion and of course more of herself.
Why is turning 30 such taboo? Though the 20′s are fun, it was a lot of lessons learned the hard way. With 30 comes true adulthood and growth. So welcome She-She, I’ll meet you at the 30 mark in a coupe of weeks.
Too Good For You - Illustration By Polly Nor
Don’t walk around in fear today.
Put your evil eyes on. Splash your Florida Waters. And Burn your Sages.
Better yet... It’s Friday! Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Make your own luck.
Create Your Coven
I found when researching how to start or join a coven there was a lot of Pomp and circumstance that a regular, broke witch may or may not be able to understand or pay.
Maybe you’re a city girl and there not be a huge following of witches and warlocks you can reach out to. Maybe you just can’t find Mugwort, and wormswood, or a goblet made with Amber stones. Here’s what we KrystalKhadijah did.
We did it on Halloween night. You do NOT have to do it on Halloween, but a full moon or New Moon would be great.
Wear things that make you feel strong and powerful, any stones you get great vibes from, scent your body in oils that make you feel good. If you think its too dramatic, its not enough. This is an initiation, this is an important moment in your spiritual identity.
Gather outside. Even if it is raining you want to be outdoors. You can be under a shelter. You want to let the Earth know your intentions and that you will be joining your magicks together with other witches/warlocks.
First we set a small round table and wiped it down with Florida Water. Added candles (of course) an empty bowl (you’ll need this in a moment). We laid a protective circle of Eucalyptus branches around the table. Place any crystals or talisman that you carry day to day.
Before hand we had found a natural element that represented us. I brought fresh cinnamon sticks, Sheridan.Wildwoman brought her favorite flower Marigolds, and Nita Boo brought cactus. These are all things that we felt represented our personality and energies.
First we cleansed each other with Sage. Starting with the hand and bringing in towards the center. When you get to your feet bring it up, visualizing the Earths energy coming from the ground and through your partners.
Now for the ceremony. Each witch speaks, bringing whatever element of their choosing, and placing it in the bowl. You can say whatever is on your heart. Thank your coven for being in each others lives, do I have to mention intentions again? Speak from your heart and soul.
Finally we poured a libation. Beer or wine is best, but if you are a minor or don’t drink, natural juice, or a tea special to your coven would be great as well. Pour and each of you sip from the same cup. The last person must finish the drink. Leave none in the cup. Hold hands and visualize your energies connecting. Thank the Earth and any of your chosen Gods, Goddesses, Ancestors or entities. Welcome.
The thing is to not let money, or overly esoteric things stop you from making your coven. Magick is made from necessity. Magic was not a thing for the rich and well to do. We worked with what we had. Make your magic ladies. Gather and prosper.
Basically our look as we celebrate Sheridan.Wildwoman’s solar return today.
Erykah! Girl!
African Sea Maiden mermaid by SutherlandArt
“Bhooma kshamami” (O Earth, excuse me)
“A prayer in which he ask the goddess of Earth to forgive him for walking on her”.
Whenever we go out, we show out.
You don’t have to be in the typical “witch costume” to feel powerful. Wear things that make you feel confident and powerful.
Some people feel powerful in a clean spiritual white. Some people are more colorful in there garbs, bringing together west African and Carribean roots.
But all black is wonderful as well. Black is powerful too.
