ARTIST STATEMENT

Looking at the histories of other artists, my first inspiration emerged from watching the documentary ‘All watched over by Machines of Loving Grace’ where I was particularly inspired by the experimentation conducted in the virtual ping pong game where none of the audience was informed of why they were there or what they were to do. Gradually amongst the crowd all essences of a hierarchy were forgotten with a functional system being created amongst the people allowing for a successful game of virtual ping pong game where everyone participated. Collaborating together they managed to maneuver the bat on the screen in order to hit the ball back to the other team. This idea of a lack of instruction inspired my experiments leading to my final project.

Through these inspiring artists and the documentary I was led to conduct a series of experiments. Mica Angela Hendricks and her 4 year old’s works triggered the idea of drawing turtle bodies and allowing the public to complete the pictures by drawing the heads, all the while the bodies covered so that the animal remained a mystery. Her article states “…if you have a preconceived notion of how something should be, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE DISAPPOINTED.” I found this idea highly captivating in relation to collaboration. When working in a group everyone has the basic human condition of having their own pre-determined idea of what the final work will be, this idea is commonly hard to break away from. This was the catalyst to me creating my final artwork.

My final work was based around the vagueness associated with collaboration. By giving a range of people two pieces of clay with a single body part written on them each had to mold their clay into the specified word. With no instruction of what animal or creature they were contributing to and no relationship or communication about the project allowed between the participants, a sense of community was removed allowing for the diverse results amongst the limbs. The amount of time that each person spent making their pieces varied greatly highlighting the issues associated with group work and the difficulty behind getting everyone to contribute the same amount of effort and work. All people have different standards and finding a mutual one can be highly challenging. As documentation I made a video placing a film of each person making their part side by side presenting the time differences between each persons making. The background noise consists of the group talking, throughout asking for more instruction then gradually giving up and following instinct on how their sculpture should look. By overlapping the sounds the sense of confusion amongst the group is made more prominent due to the lack of instruction behind the task and the lack of communication.

When attaching the pieces together to create the final sculpture I found it very difficult not to alter them. In many cases I had to slightly such as digging holes in the sides of the body to create a sturdy joint between it and the arms. This reflected how when collaborating in order for everyone's work and ideas to fit together change has to be accepted to allow a sense of flow and cooperation amongst the work. The more I worked the clay the more the signatures on each body part began to fade resembling the individual body parts becoming one collaborative work rather than just single pieces by individual people.

After Attaching all the pieces and leaving the sculpture to dry it was later knocked over resulting in it breaking showing the unplanned and uncontrollable elements of collaboration. Due to its now fragile form clay would not mend. This resulted in my use of silicone and cement making the work stronger than it initially was. The forced collaboration of mixed media through the combination of materials allowed the sculpture to be strengthened, also adding new elements to its physical appearance. Through all these processes my final collaborative project was created. By removing any preconceived notions a truly unique object was enabled to be made all the while reflecting the positives and negatives of collaboration.

Experimentation...

Here I experiment with the overlapping and ripping of audio clips and time lapsing of video. The audio is a recording of me being taught and instructed on how to use the functions on Premier and iMovie by a friend.

After trying a number of materials such as clay, glue and silicone the pieces wouldn't mend resulting in my use of cement. The sculpture ended up being far sturdier than it originally was reflecting how unplanned disasters in colaboration can have positive outcomes.

After allowing the work to dry for a few days I began painting it. Shortly afterwards I asked a friend if he would be able to help me transport it from one location to another. During this trip the sculpture was dropped representing the failure elements of collaboration...

When joining the parts together I avoided alterations but some had to be made to allow the parts to fit together in a stable manner. For example holes the body had to be slightly dug out to create joining points for the arms and legs. As I moulded the parts together I observed the signatures slightly fading representing the parts becoming one. This fading also highlights how during collaborative projects who created what isn’t the main focus, instead it is the final product in which everyone gets equal credit for.

Observations... Whilst watching everyone make their allocated body parts there was a significant difference between the time the everyone spent ranging from 54 seconds to over 16 minutes reflecting how when collaborating it is difficult to have everyone put in an equal amount of work. No one was allowed to communicate their ideas of what their body part was to look like, this removing the set of relationships essential to collaborate. This is reflected through the diversity in the result. Nothing matches.
