a lot of those suppoosedly grown ass adults in detective conan aren't very good at communicating in general. even the parents in series have jumped the shark quite a bit in regards to talking to their teenage kids

true! but i feel like that's more a consequence of them being in a mystery comedy manga where this kind of thing happens for a punchline or to add some variety to the case of the week as opposed to them actually being depicted as a good parent with a good relationship with their child. there just aren't enough pages to spare in a long running 30 year old manga for that kind of thing u_u

i know conan is a good person, but the fact that he claimed yoko's ex loved her made me give him a side eye. like cmon dude, he did not in fact not love her. the lady that looks like yoko is also a piece of shit.

I think the issue was probably that gosho had already decided to do a star crossed lovers kind of case early on in the series to tug at the readers' heartstrings for these two people who "love" each other but couldn't be together due to a series of unfortunate events. but then when he was adding all the suspects and building the case around it, the circumstances got too convoluted and he ended up making the "victim" look more like a vengeful asshole than a tragic heartbroken young man.

I feel like Yoko ogino's boyfriend from An Idol's Locked Room Murder Case was an unhinged creep himself. instead of trying to talk to it, he just assumes the worst out of his ex and kills himself to frame and smear her? and it focuses on his feelings, not how Yoko feels about one of her rivals breaking into her room and her ex boyfriend offing himself to ruin her life.

I forgot about that!! Even if it really was Yoko who didn't want to have anything to do with him again after he broke up with her because he was too much of a coward to have an honest conversation about the future of their relationship, how does he have the audacity to try and ruin her life?? In fact, even if Yoko was the one who cold heartedly ditched him for her career, that still doesn't give him half a reason to pull that shit.

Anyway, if his aim was to ruin her life, he could've just gone to the magazines with a story and let the press do it on his behalf. He clearly just wanted to die and decided to drag her down with him because he's a petty asshole.

not to mention that said victims' mistakes don't match the punishments anyways. funny thing is the victims are much better friends to the culprits in case closed because they forgive them without any struggle.

god yeah that one case where the woman forgives her husband for making a plan to murder her (and subsequently their unborn child), going through with it and doing it in front of a group of children because she was being mean for idk, a couple of months? I was infuriated on the behalf of everyone there.

its sad how little trust some of the culprits have in detective conan, they've been friends with their victims for years yet all it takes is one misunderstanding/mental spiral to kill/try to kill their friends in a calm or even paranoid fit of rage?? 😔

I know!!! The amount of times someone is like "my spouse/friend/family of many years has done something unforgiveable that feels completely out of character of them considering our long history, but obviously that just means they were always awful, evil people and I'm not going to talk to them about it at all so my only option is to spend weeks/months crafting a meticulous plan to murder them over this" crazy.

not to mention the mom fumbled at a last chance at redemption by screaming at maki, which only confimred that her mother seemingly never loved her. she did, but ther'es no way for either of her daughters to know that.

imo I think their mother didn't want to be redeemed. she didnt' want Maki to forgive her, because ultimately she facilitated this situation that led to Mai's death by her inaction. she probably wanted to be killed by Maki and wanted to ensure that she wouldn't feel any guilt over it.

that's what i was thinking too, and with the way she talked to maki, no wonder maki doesn't think her own mother likes too. she's a victim, but she can't get exonerated for being mean to her daughters and being complicit in the abuse.

so sorry about the late reply! I was like, I gotta reread perfect preperation to answer this and then I forgot until I saw next week's episode preview which reminded me about this ask orz

anyway, my short answer would be yes, I think so!

jjk spoilers incoming if anyone reading this is anime only

my long answer would be that gege didn't expand much on maki and mai's unnamed mother but as I understand, she likely grew up in the same circumstances they did and was forced into the position where complying with the sexism of the zenin clan and staying subservient and quiet was the path of least resistance. which then became what she wanted for her children as well. but of course, just because you are a victim of abuse, it doesn't mean you can't abuse someone else in turn. if you make your own children live under the same thumb you did without trying to make things better or protecting them, then you're only perpetuating the same pain you went through.

as an aside, I think their mother's last scene shows that mai is actually quite similar to her. they both were willing to live under the expectations the clan put them under and wished maki would do the same since, with the limited options they had, they decided that being a servent in the zenin clan is still "better" than the danger of being a jujutsu sorcerer. but ultimately, when that safety is no longer an option, they both wished that the whole system would be destroyed which is why mai leaves it behind as her last wish to maki and why their mother's last action was to finish off naoya.
