MinecraftEdu Development Update: Assignment Checklists & more User Control
Hey all minecraftians,
Since the last blog post, we've been focusing on adding some exciting new features into MinecraftEdu. Two of the top features include assignment checklists and user control panel!
Assignment Checklists have always been a highly requested feature. We have revamped and enhanced the Assignments within the game. Teachers can now add infinite amount of assignments and track the progress of the class.
In the new assignment panel teachers can add new assignments for students and track the progress of the assignments.
Here is the working draft of the edit assignments page.
Students will see a panel like this by pressing the “M” key by default. The assignment description can be seen by hovering over the assignment. When a student has completed the task they select the checkbox beside the assignment.
Whitelist and Alias Protection access from the Servertool GUI!
You now have the ability to control who can enter your server, require them to use a password, and change passwords for users.
Best,
@Kulttuuri & @Tonsse (Shoutout to @HikariKishi for proofreading)
MinecraftEdu Development Update: Alias Protection
Hey all Minecraftians,
Let’s do a quick recap for the last 2 weeks. As an added twist, we are going to spice things up by sharing drafts of the new features. How about that!
First, let’s start with some of the features added in development build 15 last week…
Alias Protection
Have you ever wished MinecraftEdu had that extra layer of protection for your students? Well we listened and have brought you a new feature called Alias Protection! With Alias Protection enabled, students will set and be required to use not only an alias, but also a password to gain access to the server.
Once you turn on Alias Protection, the next time a user logs in they will be prompted with a yes or no choice. You can select yes to set an alias for password, or no to ignore this message. If you choose to protect it, when you log in you will require the alias password. We think this is a great addition to the offline functionalities that MinecraftEdu provides. We are still throwing ideas to improve this even further... For example with user control panel... Stay tuned!
We went from this...
To this...
Idle Kicking
This is similar to Minecraft’s own idle kick feature, if a student has gone idle for a set amount of time it will log them out. Typically these features save on costs, prevent any afk abuse, and keep the servers clear from uncessary connections and lag. As with all of our work, we have added our own TeacherGaming flare to it. This feature can be used by anyone with MinecraftEdu, but it was primarily implemented for our upcoming cloud server hosting of MinecraftEdu! Yes, you heard it here first!
Progress corner:
Assignment checklists & assignment progress tracking! For those of you that use the current Assignment feature, this will be a great improvement. The idea is that teachers can now set multiple assignments for students, each with separate title and description. Teachers can then individually track and check off when they have completed assignments. Teachers can view progress in realtime seeing who has completed what assignments and track how much of the class has completed them. This is sure to be a wonderful addition to our wide range of classroom management tools.. Drafts and images of the work-in-progress feature coming soon in a follow-up blog post!
Happy craftin',
@Kulttuuri & @Tonsse (shoutout to @HikariKishi for proofreading)
MinecraftEdu 1.6.4 Stable Build 14 Available!
Hey you Minecraftian!
The newest MinecraftEdu 1.6.4 Stable Build is now available! Grab it from member's area or use the built in updater. Since the last stable build, we have worked day and night, there have been a lot of changes. Let me share some of the more notable features as screenshots. If you are feeling adventurous browse through the list of changes here at the changelog, warning you may want to call for an engineer!
"Local Worlds" has been changed into "MinecraftEdu World Library". You can now download and launch worlds made by others! To use this feature, click the "MinecraftEdu World Library" button above, then...
Browse into the world that you'd like to download and press the "Download with Server Launcher" button in the world page. If download does not start automatically, click the "World Downloader" window (this problem occurs with Mac systems).
Now world starts to download. To go back to launch world(s) you have downloaded, press the "Back to Server Launcher" button and launch the world of your choise!
Ability to enable / disable client & server mods!
Online mods repository!
New languages!
Added proxy pettings panel in Launcher! We still need more feedback of this feature, so please drop by at Minecraft Teachers Google Group if you are having problems with it.
Launcher now by default keeps on running for easy access!
Updated Forge to build 965! Latest mods should now work.
Corrected an issue where students were unable to interact with certain mod items placed on top of disallow blocks. This included ComputerCraft turtles.
Added option to set "Message of the Day" and "World Welcome Message" in the Server windows' "World information" tab.
New visual aids, to identify when you are in a specific building mode.
To better reflect the purpose, we have renamed the MinecraftEdu Servertool to MinecraftEdu Server Launcher.
Happy 'craftin!

Key for creating best product in the world is to care
Before we dig into the article, my officially recommended song to be played in the background while reading this article is: Air - La Femme d'Argent. Click here to play it on Youtube.
Thomas Schranz wrote a article “The simple Secret behind wonderful Products” which you should really read through. After reading it, I really felt like I should write a article about the same thing as that is really something I have also noticed working with MinecraftEdu, from my life and from other people achieving great things in the IT field. I’m focusing more on examples in this article because I always feel like writing too theoretical article that smart people that want to make themselves feel smart writes cannot represent the findings in an understandable format. Even that last sentence felt like something some smart person would come up with every now and then in their writings. Let's avoid that kind of nonsense.
So in a nutshell - what is it that makes some games, products or even Minecraft mods so good, even though they are being created by one to just few people? Some people would say that it is “talent”, so you are a good programmer and you can achieve this. Well, that helps. But if we have a talented programmer that does not care about what he is doing, we can only expect a mediocre end-product. By caring about your product, you spend those extra nights polishing your product, fixing even the slightest problems and you are checking with ruler that even the pixels match in your interfaces. See where I am getting here?
Let’s take an example here. You are being paid to take care of a baby. Your main motivation is money and you care about the baby, but when comparing to the situation that it is your baby, your main focus is that you really care about the baby and want to see him / her grow up. Having everyone in a team to really care about the project, like growing up a baby and see it grow, makes everyone work really hard to achieve best end-results. This creates the term that people call good group dynamics. There you go, it’s not rocket science.
So what is it that makes bad group dynamics? When I was doing group projects at university, some groups failed at their projects even though they had talented people working on it. Why? Not everyone in the group cared about the end-result. They only wanted to pass the course, which promoted the same spirit into the talented ones who stopped caring. You cannot create a great end-result in a situation where group does not care about the end product and this is what we can call bad group dynamics (even though some other situations also promote bad dynamics, like bad relationships between group members, but in the end it just makes them not care about the end result).
Let’s make another example here from large company perspective. Large company, which main motivation is to gain money, finds a project from which they think they can make money of. They allocate, say 3 million dollars into it, hire a team of 30 people to work on the project and think that they can make it amazing product just by having a lot of talented people working on it and throw money into the project.
Money is good motivation to get people working, but where it falls apart is that if you have a team of 30 whose only motivation to work is money and who do not care about the end-product, you will NEVER create something than people who care about their product can achieve (see the baby example I wrote above). People are not stupid and they do realize that this is a large company which just wants to make money and they use you to achieve that. And now you still question why some AA games have insane budgets but in the end they still fail…
I will not discuss here on how to start caring about what you are doing because it really is another subject to write of. But if you really want to get examples of how to care from company’s perspective, take a look at how Finnish companies like Supercell and John Deere both made the whole company feel like a family where everyone got the same bonuses, starting from just hired people and ending in seniors. Having the spirit of family where everyone cares about each other and cares about the end product will make the company work very, very efficiently.
In the end I have to mention that there are also cases which might reduce your caring, for ex. changing family situations or finding something that grabs your attention. This is normal and has also happened to me. But I know that when I do care about what I am doing, I am on top of my game and always aiming for something that others have never achieved before.
Yep. I also left this post relatively small for a reason; the concept what I am writing here is really simple and writing a 30 page theoretical doctoral study would just make people miss the whole point. Also, if you liked the article, feel free to retweet it on twitter by pressing here, thank you! :)

MinecraftEdu Development Build 7: The Great Big Xmas Update
Hello,
For MinecraftEdu Users, Christmas will arrive few days early! After a long time in development, MinecraftEdu 1.6.4 Build 7 is now live! There are many, and I mean many exciting new developments in today's release. A few of the hot features include: Mod Manager, World Templates, Proxy Support... Wow! Below is list of features added into the latest build!
- Online World Templates: MinecraftEdu Classroom users are now able to login and share their worlds created with MinecraftEdu here! Be sure to remember that this is a beta feature, so if you encounter any problems or have feedback, please do not hesitate to post and participate in the MinecraftEdu Development thread in the Minecraft Teachers Forum. And before moving into next feature, I have to mention that this feature wouldn't have made it just now without the help of @HikariKishi and @EduElfie!
- Improved World Templates Format: We have updated and added additional fields that world templates require. By doing this, we hope to help users find a world that will best fit their needs. Teaching materials and screenshots are contained in the world template, and will be downloaded with the world!
- Mod Manager: You can now select which mods are enabled through MinecraftEdu Launcher for both client and server. You can conveniently download mods from our online mod repository. We are currently working on getting more mods in the repository, so what is currently there is just the beginning. We are reaching out to many of the more popular mod makers within the community to secure rights for distribution. What did help a lot in developing this feature was @minecraftcpw and he's awesome Forge Modloader.
- Proxy Support: If you use MinecraftEdu behind proxy, great news! You can now go to your Launcher Settings panel and set your proxy details!
- Bugfixes, smaller features... For example, you can now set a welcome message for your world through server interface. You will also get a better visible indicator depending on your build or fill mode... no more accidental world-destroying fills!
See our Full Changelog for details!
And everyone, have a awesome christmas and merry new year (or vice versa) :) - Team MinecraftEdu
MinecraftEdu 1.6.4 stable build 6 is now live. You can grab it from our member’s area. The changelog can be seen here. Some notable changes:

MinecraftEdu: the-not-so-secret-friday-update
Hi everyone
It has been a long time since the last update email from us, but without further ado we are extremely happy to present to you the not-so-secret-friday-update announcement: MinecraftEdu 1.6.4 development build 1!!! It's now in the updater so go grab it and play around with it. Try the horses! Here is the changelog for those interested: http://minecraftedu.com/wiki/index.php?title=Changelog#1.6.4_Build_1
Work productivity at it's best while multitasking between MinecraftEdu and Facebook!
As always, remember to take care with development builds, they are called development builds for a reason and might have features that do not work correctly or can corrupt something in your world. For that reason we recommend installing the development build in a different location to your standard MinecraftEdu installation or make a backup of your current installation. But 1.6.4, WOOOHOOO!
We think we have a pretty good build here but if you find any issues or bugs with this version please let us know so that we can work on fixing them. You can contact us through http://tinyurl.com/mceduchat or [email protected]
In other news there is also some other cool stuff happening in our office. Our office and the whole posse (as we say in Finland, translates to gang!) was moved to Tampere. We still only have a slow, temporary internet connection here and we really should do some decorating, but we're getting there!
All the best,
The MCEdu Development Team
Finally! Stable MinecraftEdu 1.5.1 live!
It has been a long battle to tame the bugs and problems we have been encountering while updating from the previous MinecraftEdu release, but finally the latest stable build is live.
Read more about the features of this release in our news section!
Download the latest build from the MinecraftEdu members area!
Important change to MinecraftEdu Versions
We have also made an important change to our software version numbering. Our software version is now numbered based on the Minecraft version. The current stable version is labelled as: "MinecraftEdu 1.5.1 build 9 stable". We will, from now on, be creating two kinds of builds; development and stable. Development builds are the ones that are made more frequently and may contain problems and experimental features (these versions are tested by the community for bugs, and we welcome any feedback on bugs you may find). Stable builds are being released more infrequently and these builds have (hopefully) all the main problems fixed.
Reasons why it has taken so long for this stable release
Block converter: As new blocks were introduced to Minecraft we had to alter our block id numbers. This resulted in "block swaps" when a world created in an older version was opened with a more recent version of MinecraftEdu. We had to implement a block id converter for older worlds.
Forge support: MinecraftEdu is now built on top of Forge. This added the support for almost all Forge based mods but took quite a long time to do.
Experimental World Template Support: MinecraftEdu now supports creating world templates out of your saves. You can also download world templates made by others. Implementing this took some extra time.
Updater: Implementing the updating logic into the MinecraftEdu Launcher took some extra time & added many hurdles for us.
Frequent Minecraft Updates: We need to keep up with original Minecraft updates by moving all of our old changes into new Minecraft versions. This will always take some extra time.
Best,
Kulttuuri & Tonsse

MinecraftEdu Development Status Update - Minecraft 1.4.5 & World Templates
Bit of a status update on what's going on:
- We are merging MinecraftEdu into Forge to include support for all external Forge mods!! This is still not finished, so please do not get your hopes that up yet =)
- MinecraftEdu has been ported to Minecraft 1.4.5. There is a severe problem that all MinecraftEdu blocks have the same ID values as new Minecraft values, so all MinecraftEdu blocks are replaced when you start up old 1.3.x map. That is why we still haven't released the latest version. We have a converter for this, but there has been some problems when testing the converter so that sometimes even the new worlds are being converted again and you will encounter some problems. Not sure if we just release this converter as an separate tool or include it with latest version of MinecraftEdu so that users can manually convert old maps into new format.
Development has been mostly done by @Tonsse for the past months, I have been mostly focusing on my thesis to get my university degree finished. After that I could fully focus on MinecraftEdu development.
- We have a new trainee, @I-H creating us MinecraftEdu video tutorials and doing us all that fancy tutorial + help material that we have been so much missing! Check this out!
- We currently have the system ready in MinecraftEdu Servertool that allows users to download maps from Internet. I am still very skeptical about the upload thing and allowing everyone to just upload maps into our server, so I have been thinking of first just providing the download capability and giving some people rights to upload maps into our system so that we get feedback how downloads works out for people. I also got an idea of integrating some / all world templates also into some learning system, like Joomla and there could be a link so that you can browse the world template materials in our Joomla / similar site. How does that sound?
... I almost forgot, @Tonsse also created this thing into the Launcher (though needs bit of polishing):
Best,
@Kulttuuri

MinecraftEdu 0.984 final pre-release
The new version of MinecraftEdu has been under development for quite some time and we are happy to release the final pre-release version. This release will be moved as stable build next wednesday if there are no game-breaking problems. Version will be the same, 0.984 for the stable build if no problems occur.
The 1.4.2 version of minecraft has also just come out and we will begin to incorporate it into MinecraftEdu just now. With 1.4.2 there is a issue with our block id:s that are conflicting with new 1.4.2 block:s, so that will be the biggest issue for us to tackle with 1.4.
Small changes:
- Open menu for servertool.
- Tooltips to include main menu buttons.
- Replaced big admin menu icons with smaller ones.
- Translation fixes.
- Fixed updating issue (does not anymore ask for updating).
All problems can be reported directly at support(at)teachergaming.com or directly in our Twitter accounts. Have fun!
Regards,
Kulttuuri, Tonsse, Pessu & Masennus
MinecraftEdu 0.9833 (final?) pre-release

New cool stuff
As usual, changelog for this pre-release can be found here! Some cool new additions:
Added PVP button in general menu!
New COOL tooltips for all setting buttons in client!
All general & assignment information is now also saved with map!
All problems can be reported directly at support(at)teachergaming.com or directly in our Twitter accounts. Have fun!
