(Aka My friends are tired are hearing me cry about my audio children so I’ll just rave to y’all)
1. The Penumbra Podcast: The Penumbra is either the best hotel or railroad this side of nowhere, depending on who you ask. Either way the Penumbra is full of stories. From noirs to westerns to high fantasies I promise you this podcast will have something you will love. There are currently 2 running story lines, along with a number of one shot episodes. The first story follows a private eye named Juno Steel, who lives in Hyperion City on Mars sometime in the future. We follow the snarky P.I. as he uncovers some of Mars’ biggest conspiracies, including a prophesied utopia, an ancient martian tomb and how a certain master thief can be so damn adorable. The second story line, called The Second Citadel is a fantasy set in a world where humanity has had to build back up its society after deadly clashes with monsters. The story follows various knights of the crown, tasked with seeking out and slaying said monsters, who slowly find that the world of monsters might not be as cruel as they were always told it would be. This podcast is A+++++ for lgbtqia content and I absolutely adore it. The Penumbra was one of my first podcasts and it remains to be my absolute favorite.
2. King Falls AM: King Falls seems to be a small, quaint, forest town, but under this facade is a town full of the paranormal. We tune in to the Sammy and Ben Show, an AM radio show in King falls that follows its residents and their dealings with the strange and spooky phenomena of the town. I can’t say much else without spoiling the plot but I cannot recommend this podcast enough. All the characters are lovable unless your name is Gregg Frickard and though the plot progresses a bit slowly in the beginning the build up is so worth your time. Again full marks for lgbtqia content (but I feel like with most podcasts that’s a given)
3. Wolf 359: This podcast follows the journey of the crew of the USS Hephaestus orbiting around the star Wolf 359. The episodes center around the logs of the communications officer Doug Eiffel as he discovers radio frequencies bouncing around deep space broadcasting classical music recordings. I feel like this podcast is popular enough it doesn’t even need recommending anymore, but on the off chance you haven’t listened to it yet I promise you it lives up to all its hype. This podcast somehow remains hilarious while making its entire audience sob.
4. The Bright Sessions: The Bright Sessions follows Dr. Bright, a therapist for the strange and unusual. Including a mind reader, a time traveler, and an empath. A great take on the super powered genre, instead of our characters working together to save the world, we watch them instead struggling with the mundane struggles of everyday life. This podcast is so wholesome and a great take on mental health issues and of course lgbt characters. Like Wolf 359 I feel like everyone and their dog has already listened to tbs but this is a great place to start with if you are new to podcasts.
5. The Adventure Zone: is a podcast about 3 comedian brothers and their father playing table top games together. The McElroys are hilarious and cultural icons but still deliver powerful, meaningful stories. The have currently run 5 campaigns, consisting of a high fantasy, a superhero story, a monster of the week show, a western, and a mystery. The first, and longest campaign is a D&D game called Balance and follows three adventurers named Taako, Merle, and Magnus as they embark on a journey that turns out to bigger than their world itself. Again can’t tell you much due to spoilers but I would 10/10 recommend this podcast, even to those unfamiliar with table top games.
6. ars PARADOXICA: Sally Grissom is a physicist living in the modern world, that is until she finds that she has accidentally created time travel and is now trapped in the 40s during the height of World War Two. Sally is quickly recruited into a Manhattan Project-eque secret government project where she must make sure that both she and the U.S government doesn’t misuse time travel or let it fall into the wrong hands. Shenanigans ensue. This podcast has all the best parts of Doctor Who mixed with a whole bunch of political intrigue.
7. Alice Isn’t Dead: A Nightvale Presents podcast following a woman who spontaneously takes a job driving commercial trucks cross country when she learns that her wife, Alice, is in fact not dead, and instead roaming the country. However the woman soon finds herself entangled in the same conspiracy that took Alice away from her. This podcast is creepy, and somehow really aesthetic. The final season has just started airing so now is a perfect time to catch up before the finale
8. Within The Wires: Another Nightvale Presents podcast, this one chronicles the stories of an alternate universe from our own. Where society has gone through a remodel, and concepts such as family have been entirely thrown out. The first seasons take the form of relaxation audio tapes from some sort of institute, and the second comes in the form of a museum audio tour, or at least that’s what they appear to be at first glance.
9. The Behemoth: This podcast follows a young girl, who finds herself disenchanted with everyday life. So when a monster seemingly appears out of the ocean and begins his walk cross country she seizes her opportunity and joins him on his trek, catching the attention of just about everyone. The story of the girl and her monster walking across the U.S. gains an international following and is so wholesome to listen to. It’s sequel, called Izzy, chronicles the aftermath and the fate of the behemoth named Max. This podcast is so underrated and I honest to god don’t understand why its sooooooo good.
10. The Orbiting Human Circus (Of The Air): and to finish it out, surprise, surprise another Nightvale Presents Podcast! The Orbiting Human Circus is a TV show taped at the very top of the Eiffel Tower. We follow the tower’s janitor, Julian, as he tries desperately to get closer to the production of the circus he loves, even if it means causing a few accidents. This podcast is so soft and aesthetic and is a nice, now suspenseful listen.
