I have been on Tumblr for a number of years now, under various names; @anewrenaissanceman, @ofmythandman, and @thinksexy. I like to change things up from time to time and occasionally I have had to start over out of necessity (pesky Tumblr and identity theives). Regardless, I like to rebuild my blog as an expression of beauty and creativity. For me, itās a canvas, not a depot.
One of the ways I do it is to do, what I call, archive diving through some of my favorite sites on Tumblr (ie. the list below). The problem is, archive browsing and searching are best done from a computer, rather than a phone, but many of the sites I like are not set up to be searched or browsed from a computer. It is a feature that has to be turned on and needs to be done from a computer.
If you are a site that mentions tags in your description (like #me or #selfie) or encourages people to submit posts (particularly writing posts) or if you just like people to be able to search through your site or archives, then I suggest you do these simple tweaks.
Log onto your Tumblr site from a computer (any browser or OS). Go to Account (person icon in upper right corner), then Settings (gear icon). Under Blogs, on the right hand side of the screen, select the blog you want to make search and archive friendly (most of you will have only one, but some will have more). Scroll down to the bottom of the page and make sure that all three switches under Visibility are turned on; Ā
Allow logged-out users to see this blog. Ā
Allow this blog to appear in search results. Ā
Flag this blog as adult-oriented.
The first one makes the archive usable as well as allowing submissions from the computer. Without this turned on, all submissions must be done by phone or tablet. If people want to edit photos or write large amounts of text, it must be sent from the computer to the phone and then uploaded. A lot of extra work. You will make a lot of friends by turning this feature on.
The second one allows searching from computer and phone. Ever click the magnifying glass to search a site and down drops the list of tags and you select one and it says āNothing There?ā That is because search is turned off. That is why this one is important.
The last one is because many of us are NSFW. We know who we are and we donāt want little eyes peeping.
Some of you only use your phones for searching and posting. Archive browsing is not a feature enabled for phones, but searching is affected if this is not turned on.
Vwalla. That is it. Now, people can search your site using tags and view your archive for past posts. Also, if you are like me, I like to Submit from my computer and that can only be done when these are turned on.
You may have reasons for turning off these features. That is your prerogative, but if you donāt have a reason, I suggest you turn on these features. It will make for a much more user friendly site.
