      “Kurisu Makise…?” It strikes familiarity to her knowledge. “Ah… I read your article for a case I was working on not long ago. That was quite impressive. To think I would have the opportunity to meet you here, of all places…” Unfortunate, perhaps, but there it was. Taking the other’s offer for a handshake she nods, her face to express cordiality and a touch of admiration. “Naoto Shirogane. I look forward to hearing your lecture today, Makise-san.”

    It’s a little surprising to find someone who appeared to be from her own world, more of a relief perhaps to have that small sense of familiarity. However, she was used to others recognising her, yet she remains humble about it.

    “It’s nice to find someone from the same place as me, I hope you enjoyed reading my article at least,” even if it did seem like she only had for work purposes. “Unfortunate maybe but I think it’s a bit of good luck to meet you here Shirogane-san,” retracting her hand in time for one of the other teachers to approach and inform her that it was time. “Ah looks like we’re starting, hopefully I wont bore you, but if you don’t mind maybe we can talk afterwards?” Clearly pleased to find someone who seemed likeminded and came from the same place.

      “Huh?” She’s evidently surprised at the response, and it’s as if she’s only just realizing Makise wasn’t accustomed to using either of the two offered weapons she’d managed to take. “Oh. Right. Hmm…” Brows furrowed in thought, but really, this wasn’t exactly the time for too much thinking either. The most important thing was to shield oneself from harm. At least maybe for herself, if only so that she could continue helping people in the way she knows how. But as for Makise… 

      “I’m not gonna ask you to fight if you don’t want to. But the way this is going, you’re gonna have to at least know how to defend yourself, right? What are you gonna do if someone tries to kill you?” Her demeanour’s shifted to one of seriousness, as if to express the importance of what she’s trying to convey. “I’ll take you to the closest shelter if you want, but before we get moving, you need to take this. Y’know, just in case.” After making sure it was loaded she places the gun back to the girl’s hand. “They try to kill you, you don’t hesitate. Just shoot, okay?” The seriousness in her expression remains, eyes levelling intently with Makise’s as if to confirm she understood. After handing her a bulletproof vest to wear, she does return to her usual cheerful demeanour when her expression shifts into a smile of encouragement moments later. “Can’t have my mortal enemy get killed by someone else, y’know? You’ll survive this battle, I’ll make sure of it! So just follow me,” words last spoken before she continues on, waiting for the other to follow as she leaves the armoury to proceed into the warzone outside.

    Kurisu would beg to differ, now was exactly the right time to think, failing to do so would end up with one of them dead or both. Suzuha was evidently in combat mode, failing to remember that Kurisu had no prior experience with such things. It’s not that she didn’t want to help, she just didn’t know how to when she’d never been in a situation like this before. A heavy sigh passes her lips, brows creasing as she looks to the floor. Just point and kill someone right? She made it seem so easy, but something like that should never be easy, not for anyone. Perhaps she thinks it’s a little saddening that someone so young was used to all this. “It’s not that I don’t want to but I...don’t know how to,” she couldn’t expect her to adapt that quickly.

    She hesitantly takes the loaded gun, uncertain as she looks at the weapon, a thing made solely to kill and harm. She doesn’t want to use it, but she doesn’t want to die either. “That’s easier said than done,” a murmur as she continues to eye the contraption. “I don’t know if I can kill someone,” even if it meant she lived or died, she supposes she wont ever know until she’s put in that situation. She only glances away from the device when the others more usual upbeat tone returns, and although Kurisu’s response is far from humoured she’s eased somewhat.

    “I’m not your mortal enemy!” She snaps back with pouted lips, was she ever going to drop that? Her supposed enemy didn’t even exist yet and she hopes would never exist. She sighs once more, the smallest upturn of her lips before following after Suzuha. Fortunately, unlike a certain mad scientist, Kurisu’s stamina was actually pretty decent, despite spending most of her time sitting down and wasn’t all that physically active. “Where exactly are we going? We need to have some kind of plan,” just rushing into the thick of it seemed like a pretty ridiculous idea. It’s then, in the corner of her eye as they dashed through the city, does she catch a glimpse of white and red, she’s not sure what makes her stop but she does. “Amane-san wait a moment...” seemingly dazed as she watches the red and white figure emerge from the plumes of smoke that encompassed the city.

      “Is that so…” Were she to consider her words and the amount of files she has in hand, none of which were notes that she herself had possessed… Eyes piqued with curiosity she comes to the most discernible conclusion. “I apologize, I had thought you were among the students here, as I am. You are a guest speaker, then? Or perhaps our true teacher, as I have been informed the one we had prior was only temporary.”

    “I guess that’s an easy presumption to make,” she wasn’t very old after all and by normal standards she should be a student. This happened regularly, usually followed by comments along the lines of ‘should you really be lecturing?’ or ‘You’re far too young’ and other such degrading words. “I’m just the guest speaker, robotics isn’t really my specialty,” a pause follows, she wasn’t all that adept at casual conversation either. “Kurisu Makise by the way” extending her hand to the other.

      “I don’t suppose you’ve taken this class before? This… appears to be the first time I’ve seen you.” And I am quite perceptive. No, she supposes that was awkward. Never adept at ‘small talk’, once seen as senseless and often times she still does. Perhaps she shouldn’t have proceeded with such attempts, after all…

    “Hm?” Raising her head from the files in her hands to the inquiry. She’s a little surprised someone decided to start casual conversation with her, it wasn’t something that happened often. “You assume correct, this is my first time here,” and it would probably be the last as this was a one off deal. “Although I’m not here to take the class,” a little cryptic perhaps but she thinks it’s obvious what she means.

    Separated from the one comrade who seemed like she knew what she was doing. She can only guess Suzuha’s future was reminiscent of the chaos that now engulfed Hive City. Regardless, it seemed pointless to think on such things right now as she huddled behind a crumbled building as makeshift shelter. With her legs clutched tightly to her chest, teeth bite harshly on her lip, brows furrowing as bold eyes stared at the ground. She hated feeling so useless and helpless, there was nothing she could do, despite everything she knew none of it mattered now, not when it truly counted.

    “I can’t do anything,” lithe hands clutching either side of her head, as if doing so would help her think of something, anything, to not be so worthless. In her distraught state and with disorder erupting around her there was little opportunity to see approaching soldiers that poured in from the alternative city, merciless in their pursuit. Giant black masses swarmed through, picking off anyone left defenceless and Kurisu was in their sights. 

    A single drone detected her hiding and without her even noticing it’s presence, it’s form approached and began to consume the lower part of her leg in it’s attempt to convert her. “W-What!?” Now alerted to the strange device clamped onto her leg. “No! Stay away! Get off me!” Trying to kick the black drone off her leg with her opposite but it’s form continued to overtake. Useless. Useless. Useless! All that genius and where did it get you? Nowhere, and now you’re going to die here. “No I don’t...” want to die? Hadn’t she thought at one point that perhaps ceasing to exist would be better? Was easier? But no, there were people waiting for her, she was needed, she was valued, they’d shown her that. “I want to live,” tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, “I want to live! Someone! Anyone! Please help!”

      WHERE the rise of chaos is evident she must will herself to composure. Alarm had easily made its way into her features, a quick shift from what was once a more cheerful disposition she slows her breathing a moment, assessing her surroundings, attuning her senses to the danger that awaits them. A blare of alarms, voices of discord and the sensation of immediate peril rising should they choose to stay put. Whatever awaits them, she’d rather go down fighting if not to save another’s life in her battles. Seemed it’d only been a second ago she was walking at the other’s side, a girl she’d once considered her mortal enemy but with such a concept cast aside she’s willing to accept her for what she was, for what she could be, and Suzuha now trusts she could only be so. An ally, and maybe even a friend someday?

      “Let’s go!”

      Such were the words called to Kurisu Makise, where circumstances have them running toward the armoury of weapons being offered to those willing to fight in defence of the city. Arming herself with a belt to holster two handguns, a set of knives, a vest and a rifle at her back, she now carefully tries to select from a number of suitable weapons for Makise to use, and– oh, there’s one. Quickly snatching the nearest handgun before being taken by another she turns, sees Makise and–

      “Hey, I got you one! Hurry up, we need to get you more of this stuff.” Quickly places the weapon in her hand, turns around again to find– “Whoa, a sword! Wanna use this too?”

    She doesn’t think she’s witnessed such chaos with her own eyes save for fictional stories, yet to see it happening right before her, it felt unreal. Though calm in the face of those who sought to discredit her, this was something else entirely and that calm disposition was difficult to keep. Perhaps she should consider herself lucky to be with someone once the alarms rang and the scene around them slowly began to change, crumble and distort as the skies blackened with smoke. She stands in a daze, feet frozen to the concrete as bright eyes fixate on the fires that began to consume the city, it’s only when a voice calls to her does she snap back to reality. 

    “Huh?” Go where? Yet she’s unable to question such as the other begins to run off. She knows the most sensible option is to follow, “h-hey wait!” Calling after Suzuha, following in her footsteps. They needed to find shelter, a secure place to weather the storm, yet as they ran through the city she can’t help but think nowhere was safe. And unfortunately her companion didn’t think hiding was the better option as they approach an armoury set up to defend the city. Everything was moving too quickly, even for a girl considered a genius her mind was finding it difficult to keep up.

    “Are you crazy? I don’t know how to use a gun, let alone a sword” did she forget who she was talking to? Kurisu wasn’t a soldier or a warrior. “We should be finding shelter not this, what exactly can we do about that--” pointing out to the city that was already burning. “I wanna help others too but...what can I do?”

“Ain’t it obvious? You can clearly get the end result pretty simply. Teleportation. Sure, it’s moving about one nonillion, four octillion times more than whatever you might be used to, and I might have moved us eight-thousand times further than just three meters, and as ludicrous as that might sound, there’s a very simple explanation.”

“Magic.”      Giving her a cheeky grin in response to her irascible reaction, Kurou allowed himself to enjoy it to the full extent. It was just funny. Having been raised alongside the occult, as well as being a sorcerer himself, it wasn’t every day Kurou saw someone who was surprised to see the capabilities of magic. “I’m gonna chance a guess here and say you’re from someplace that never dabbled in the supernatural? Though, technically, nothing’s quite supernatural. If it is, just means you’re lacking in understanding. You don’t seem dense, though, so I’m sure you’d like some sort of explanation out of me? A better one than just “magic.” Since that’s sort of a cheap cop out.”

    For a brief moment he had peaked her curiosity. Yes it was ridiculous, but she’s fully aware now that this place nor other places where others came from played by the same rules as her own world. Similar perhaps, yet evidently science had progressed much further than her present time. Of course her interest is short lived with his one word explanation. Magic.

    “....” A long silence follows as she eyes him with a clearly unimpressed expression. If they weren’t standing on top of a roof this might have been the part where she walked away. But she’s compelled to stay, however perhaps there’s some benefit to remaining. “Oh people dabbled all right but there’s rarely if ever any solid proof behind the supernatural. I like to think I’m far from dense, but if your so called magic has basis in reality and doesn’t sound like something pulled out of a badly written fantasy movie then go ahead, after all some people think magic is a form of science, in which case I wouldn’t even call it magic. But if you can sufficiently analyse it through empirical evidence then I’m less inclined to think you’re just crazy.” Despite having witnessed it first hand she had to know how, what sort of scientist would just accept it as it was? She needed to understand.

      HER expression’s still wrought with anger. While it was true Makise’s words had served to increase the inner turmoil that she feels, conflict rises above her animosity that she does stop to consider, at the very least, what she was trying to say. It made sense. It was logical. 

      ( No, it’s a trick. ) 

      No. What the hell was she supposed to think? Her anger doesn’t take well to being called a blockhead but there she remains still, considering her words. Part of it becomes evident when there is a shift in her expression, angered visage mitigating to confusion when she hears the other’s voice trembling. Softening. There’s a part of her that thinks this is all a trick, but still she has to consider those words earlier spoken.

      Feels like their names had triggered a switch inside of her; she hadn’t known them to the extent she wishes she had, so why…? Why does it make her hesitate? "How… How do you know I wouldn’t kill you…" Because it feels like she’s thought this once before. I can’t kill Kurisu Makise. Except…that was impossible. What reason would she have to think that? She’s a monster, and I have to kill her.

      “You don’t know me!” But I know you, and not just as the traitor she’s been told, but she’s discovered something more. Far from what she once thought of the other, much to the point that she didn’t want to kill her anymore…? She closes her eyes, grip on the knife softening, but tightening again. She has to think this through, but her mind’s clouded with confusion. Anger, still. 

      “Why am I so angry…?”

    She can see, however small, that her words are getting through to the other. She just has to keep going, to break through this cloud of anger that’s almost consumed her. How did she know? Truth was she didn’t, she’s certain Suzuha had to do many unpleasant things, many unethical things back in her time. What was one more life to achieve what she thought she wanted? What she thought she could attain here. She shakes her head, “I don’t” replying honestly and calmly, despite her increased heartbeat and clammy hands.

    “But I know we both want the same thing, I know you just want to make your dad proud right?” Even if he was long gone, even if she couldn’t find him in the present, she just wanted to carry on what he started and to create a better future. Honestly she’s a little jealous, that despite him no longer being around, they had that positive relationship, one she so desperately wanted with her own father. “I don’t think this is what he’d want for you, and I think you know that, so...” she then extends her hand out to Suzuha. “It’s okay to hate me, but let me show you that I’m not the Kurisu you think I am, I’ll show you Amane Suzuha that I’m not a monster.” To prove that this gift she had wasn’t a curse, to prove that it didn’t just bring loneliness and resentment, that she could do good with the genius she was born with and nurtured. She couldn’t accept this future Kurisu who sided with SERN, she wouldn’t become that person.

“—Oh, it isn’t, really. Sorry if it seemed that way, I didn’t really notice—you’re not hurt at all, are you?”      Kurou took her disapproving look as enough of an answer to his question. He tried laughing slightly, but it just proved to make things more awkward—on his end, at least. Luckily enough for him, though, he could just play silent until she finished talking, giving hi a few moments to compose himself.      Yet, that composure turned out to be pretty pointless, as the moment she stopped talking, he watched as her jacket caught onto some faulty structure in the shelf next to her, thus leading to it nearly falling on them both. —Nearly. Kurou leaned to the side, holding it there for a moment. “Safe. Whew, I was worried that you’d make that shelf fall dow—…”      No, she didn’t make that one shelf fall down. But, what had happened was that all the rest next to it began to tip, and one by one all the products slid off, only to get crushed as the shelves themselves fell on top of them. Ah, yes, at this point, the area between them and the cash register was clear—the cashier himself in shock about this. “——I’m gonna die.”      Thinking that, he instinctively put his hand on the girl’s shoulder, to spare her having to bear full responsibility of what they’d just done, and they were suddenly not there anymore.  They were on the roof of the apartment complexes of sector 1, the winds beating at them from all directions.

“……Well, that’s one convenience store I’m never heading back into.”

    Peeking out from behind her arms to find that she indeed hadn’t been squashed by shelves and noodles, what a terrible way to go if such had come to pass she briefly thinks. Looking to her apparent saviour, arms still guarded defensively, “well it’s not my fault the shelf was so shod--” Cut off when products begin to slide off said shoddy shelves. Wonderful. She can already see the anger bubbling up within the shop keeper after the initial shock was starting to fade. The silence that follows all the crashing is incredibly awkward. Lips part as if to concoct the best excuse she can muster, yet before she can even speak her shoulder is lightly grabbed and the next thing she knows she’s hit with gusts of wind.

    “Wha...” came her rather dumbfounded response to the sudden scenery change. For a moment she struggles to keep her balance against the beating winds, wisps of crimson hair partially obscuring her vision. “What did you do?” A demand more than an question. It’s not the most unusual thing, after the things she’s experienced but this wasn’t time leaping, they just teleported, that much she can gather. “...How did you?” Was probably the more pertinent question, at least to her. Snapping out of her daze as her surprise wears off, replaced by a deep frown. “Don’t act all casual!” As if it were the most natural thing to do. “It’s just not possible at...at least not where I’m from, people can barely teleport atoms three metres.” Sure there was no fundamental law that said it was impossible...but it was very unlikely.

   At first she’d been pretty reluctant to go to this flower festival, it seemed a little silly or that’s what she told herself. In actuality it seemed pretty fun, despite the fact that she’d likely be going on her own, having not made many acquaintances in the city, not decent ones any way. The carnival games are what catch her eye first, however she’s hesitant to play any for at least an hour before shyly asking the owner. Turns out she was actually pretty good at this basketball game, winning herself a large Upa toy, it was strangely comforting to find something from her own world.

   “It’s so cute,” she utters quietly to herself, hugging it tightly as Mayuri often suggested. Unbeknown to her someone witnessed her little moment of childishness, a side she often tried to hide but usually failed. She only realises when she turns, lightly bumps into the spectator, dropping her Upa plush. “Sorry I...” looking down at the toy on the floor. “T-That’s not mine, it’s for a friend” then remembering she had no friends here. “I mean, you can have it, it’s not like I really want it or anything.”

          Her words made him act—and he swiftly raised his calloused hand and firmly grasped the book in which she yearned for. “Here.” His voice paused as he offered her the text, in which she readily responded with a curt indication of appreciation. “Yeah, well…” His eyes darted away from hers momentarily; his presence here must have been clear and as such indicating his reasoning for being here would harmless. “I wanted to learn more about this city, more so it’s districts…” Sighing he panned back and forth on the balls of his feet, “any information would be helpful at this point; but nothing of significance stands out… which means I must be missing something…”

Fingers reached out and tapped the surface of the shelf perpendicular to his body. His grey pupils observed the array of books neatly placed wooden ledges. Perhaps such knowledge was unattainable here; this setting was home to many mysteries. That an ordinary bookstore would be limited—the more he thought of the concept, the more it had made sense.

          Folding his arms tightly across his chest and seemingly lost in his thoughts, it was her short breathes that reminded him of her presence. “… What about you? You seem to be intent on finding something, too.” He gave her a small smile, “if you need any help then I’m willing to lend a hand—” Her effort to start a conversation did not go unnoticed, however he himself wasn’t an individual who had been prone to start in discourse with a person who he was not familiar with him.

    A courteous nod of her head follows as he hands her the book. Her usual gaze, with eyes often portraying a razor sharpness as if to defy any who looked at her, soften as his words peak her interest. So he was looking into the districts as well? It was encouraging to know others thought to find clues in the depths of this city. “You think the key to this city might be found in the districts as well?” A curious tilt of her head proceeds her words. It seemed logical, to understand this place one would need to look into it’s past, people often looked to the past in order to discern the future after all. However, it was no surprise that he too had come up empty handed, these people who thought to call themselves scientists wouldn’t make it that simple.

    She too was momentarily caught up in her thoughts, a hand instinctively placed upon her chin in thought. Thoroughly exploring the districts themselves would probably be the most fruitful thing to do, yet they weren’t all that accessible. The third district in particular, she’d heard rumours that abandoned labs were there, but getting safely through sector three was proving a bit problematic. His voice brings her out of her thoughts, returning her gaze to his visage.

    “The same as you it looks like, I have to understand this place if I’m ever going to get out of here. I doubt this bookstore is going to help much, but it doesn’t hurt to look.” A pause as she contemplates his offer, perhaps he could help. “I’m convinced there’s clues in the districts but surveying them myself is a little difficult, especially the third one,” she doesn’t think an explanation as to why was needed. “If you want to find answers too maybe coming along would be useful? I could use the help, someone to watch my back wouldn’t hurt either.”
