[Theory] Tanizaki is the one getting transferred to the Mafia.
Also some rambles about his relationship with Naomi and how them not being related just made it way worse imo.
Spoilers ahead! So proceed at your own will <3
As we all know, Fukuzawa and Mori agreed that one of the agency's people would go work to the Mafia as a repayment for the help after the Sunday Tragedy. So I'll be listing below the reasons that make me believe Tanizaki is the one that will be chosen.
1 - Among the main cast, he's the only one with no close relationship with the Detective Agency.
Everyone else was handpicked by Fukuzawa or had to pass an admission test, except for him.
He's just a lil guy working his 9-5 job, who coincidentally has an ability. We tend to consider him the same as the rest but in reality he doesn't have the same relationship towards the Agency. He's not a detective and never intended to be one.
I don't mean to say he doesn't care about the ADA, he clearly does and has already sacrificed himself over and over to protect and defend it. But if we compare him to Dazai, or Atsushi... they had a much deeper journey to find themselves there. I will elaborate on his relationship to the agency further below in another topic, but with my personal interpretation.
2 - Hirotsu comments on his ability and how he could be a skilled assassin.
I believe this one is self explanatory, but also important when considering narrative and plot building. This could have been a hint already. It's not hard to imagine Hirotsu giving his opinion when the time for a decision comes and asking personally for Tanizaki, exactly because he knows his potential.
His ability is great for a mafioso. He is talented. He knows how to kill. What else do we need?
3 - Naomi and their foggy past.
In chapter 118 we had the sudden lore drop about them probably not being blood related all along. I'd like to explore this topic a little further.
But, first, we need to talk about Naomi, the novel which inspired the character. In a nutshell, the book is about a 28yo man, Jouji, who is obsessed with western culture, finds a 15yo waitress in a café, Naomi (who resembles a Canadian actress popular at the time) and decides she is to become his perfect dream wife. She moves into his house and Joji begins grooming her to growing up who he wishes her to be.
The plot twist is that he ends up becoming Naomi's personal bitch.
She manipulates him into becoming obedient to her as well as providing while giving back just enough so Joji continues to be obsessively addicted to her. At first he feels degraded and humiliated but, by the end of the book, he learns to enjoy it.
In other words: the book is about a man trying to groom a minor and getting manipulated the other way around, and her using her sexual appeal for such purpose is important for the plot.
Now, back to BSD: there are some fair similarities to the Tanizakis relationship and the main couple on the novel:
Jun'ichiro and Joji are both extremely territorial and overprotective of Naomi;
She is smart, cunning, and uses her sexual appeal to get her way;
Both of them are her bitch and very obedient to her.
And, now that we know him and Naomi are not related, other questions arose in me, specifically about the process through which her "adoption" happened. Considering the novel where she came from, it's fair to grow suspicious about them.
Firstly, why the secrecy around it?
Does anyone else know about it? Or has Tanizaki been keeping this away from everyone?
Does Naomi know she has a "real family"? Or does she think they are blood related siblings? How old was she when she came to his care?
Adding to the suspicion about them, please take a look to Tanizaki's Character song, Bewitching Screens:
To live is to have secrets you don’t want to tell anyone
Maybe that’s why miscellaneous odd jobs is sort of my specialty
My social status is so-so
Even getting carried away is fine,
But there is only one thing I cannot forgive
I’m still not unabashed enough
To be so shamelessly exposed
The fluttering, dancing white
Will dye the world to its color
Slowly…look, at the illusionary screen
Tell me, what do you see?
My redeeming quality is probably my diligence
I don’t even want to shed blood
As far as myself is concerned
But don’t cross over the forbidden territory.
I want to protect you (I want to be here)
I want to protect you (I cannot forgive this)
I want to protect (the incorruptible) everything “you” are –
The fluttering, dancing white
Will dye the world to its color
Come…look, within the illusionary screen
[Light Snow]
What is hidden is not only my existence…but also these feelings
In this space where reason is discarded
What can you see within it?
Aah… goodbye.
It's safe to say he is hiding something away. Something unforgivable and morally dubious at least.
Also, may I ask: why make his death wish that Atsushi handles with the information on Naomi's family? Was it a confession out of guilt or some kind?
This 3rd point is mostly speculation on my part, yes. But, given everything I have pointed out so far, here's my opinion on Tanizaki's transfer to the Mafia:
I am placing my bets that he will go out of his own will. He might have done something criminal on his past regarding Naomi and idk maybe going to the Mafia is what he will consider him atoning for his sins and also repaying the Agency for everything that was done for him.
In his character song, Tanizaki implies that all his life he has been bouncing around random (maybe dubious) jobs. He might have found in the agency a safe place where he was able to experience a regular life as if he was just a normal guy who has never committed no crime.
But this also could have led him into an Impostor Syndrome, for no one there knowing him for who he really is.
This way, he will try to deal with his conflicting feelings by offering himself to the mafia. Maybe say some shit about "I'm eternally grateful to everything but I was never meant to stay this long" as justification.
I don't know. Any way. These are my thoughts on the matter. Please feel free to share yours too! I think we need to talk about Tanizaki more ksajdhkjsadh
Thank you for your attention, regardless, and have a great week <3
Sweetheart, even though you treated me kindly,
My stubbornness prevailed. After we parted last night,
I went and drowned my sorry self in booze again. Waking
This morning, I remember your kindness
And sadly reflect on my vile behavior. And now,
I - a complete fake - now I’ll openly confess:
Stripped of all dignity, lacking any sense of honesty,
I was spurned on by my own illusions, into madness.
When had I ever tried to grasp the feelings of others? -
Sweetheart, even though you treated me kindly,
I was as stubborn and selfish as a child.
Waking to intimations of morning breaking outside,
Which somehow register through this pounding in my head,
I remember your kindness, and also that drunken other.
And as I sadly wonder who I really am on this chilly morning,
Something tells me that I am nobody at all.

personally I don't think if you're a kid you should be using your real name on the internet. very easy for people to find out too much about you. instead you should spend years using a different made-up name that becomes part of your persona to an arguably even greater degree than your actual name and then when you grow up and find out you're trans you have a ready-made name to switch to even if it's probably like Leaf or something

yeah yeah Asagiri said Chuuya probably thought Dazai was dead after he left the PM and before they learned he was working at the ADA, but I'm more interested in Asagiri confirming that Dazai didn't know Chuuya was faking being a vampire in Meursault, it wasn't planned, he just never believed Chuuya could have been defeated and turned into one. And then he was right.
